I thought it was a very refreshing film, a perfect palette cleanser after years of traditional superhero films. Polka Dot man stood out for me, the actor portrayed him perfectly, down to facial expressions. At this point I'd rather watch another five of these films than even one superman film.
I'd love to imagine this being the 1st half in the bag someone's ever seen, watching several minutes of lampooing the pandemic chaos, multiple suicide attempts, and a fight scene with celebrity guest Rich Evans, wondering if it's actually going to be a review of The Suicide Squad, or a review of Spacejam A New Legacy
A lot of people hold Taskmaster in high regard. Largely because he's an actually practical supervillain, but also because of how his power also kind of pushes out memories to make room for the moves, which results in interesting character study. Yes, it's comic books.
@Doom3Guy its a good example of different interests seeming meaningless to someone else. im sure plenty of people talk about startrek the same way mike talks about comic book fans
@Doom3Guy yeah they did taskmaster dirty in blackwidow it kind of bummed me out. ironically enough dudes like Bloodsport or Deathstroke are way closer to Taskmaster than what they ended up with
Regarding the opening slaughter and nerds potentially being angry about it, every single one of those characters is real and, as someone who spent the entire lead-up to this movie super excited for TDK because I've wanted to see that character in anything for years, I was howling with laughter watching the entire distraction squad die instantly.
It was obvious they weren't gonna kill off Harley Quinn so early on, but I was pretty shocked they just murdered Captain Boomerang, whom the viewers had potentially just spent a whole movie with xD That whole massacre felt like a slight at the movie before, aswell as being a funny twist.
Remember the movie "Mystery Men" from 1999 (featuring superheroes from Flaming Carrot comics)? It was a very funny movie about "misfit" heroes, the Shoveler, the Bowler. It featured Ben Stiller Janeane Garofalo, Paul Rubens, etc. It was definitely a precursor to this Suicide Squad movie.
And if you don't realize you're in a loop, you'll continually go through it over and over until either a 4th dimensional vaccine is given to you or the virus gets tired

Had no interest in seeing The Suicide Squad 2021 until seeing this review. It was actually a lot of fun and honestly I think James Gunn found the right mix of light and dark for the DCU.
The LEGO Batman movie was great and brought in some obscure DC characters as well while doing some unique things with the character while also being ironic (although the LEGO movies are just couple hour ads for LEGOs)
Actually, Tom Holland was first Spiderman in 2016, in Captain America: Civil war. That shit was teased like a year out, the highlight of the trailer, imo. So yeah, Tom Holland was being filmed as spiderman/shown to us, within/about a year after the release of The Amazing Spiderman 2.
I was on the fence on whether or not to watch this movie for a while, but a couple critic reviews I've seen convinced me to give it a chance. I went into it almost wanting to hate it, but it really quickly became the most fun I've had watching a movie in a long time, especially in the theater. If you're on the fence like I was, give it a go. It's worth it.
I liked it too. At 1st wasn't sure but went to cousins who had HBO. It's a way better movie than the 1st one. It's actually a competent funny movie imo
@@one_with_kevrything9825 “uninspired?” This is literally the most inspired DC movie that’s been made these last two decades, arguably even ever. The hell’re you on about?
I can't believe they didn't talk about the most deadly variant, the Disney plus variant. It's extremely contagious and destroys all your favorite franchises. Good too see the guys liked Fury, that movie is super underrated
The interesting thing about Doom Patrol is that, while not a perfect reflection of the comics, the comics themselves are pretty weird and does a bunch of character stuff that works really well
“None of them had super powers in the first movie, did they? There was the guy that looked like a crocodile, and that’s it.” Except for the guy who shoots fire out of his hands, and turns into a giant Aztec fire demon. Guess El Diablo just wasn’t very memorable to Jay.
Its a fair assessment though. I remember El Diablo being a great character when I watched the movie in 2016. However, watching it recently for comparison purposes, El Diablo doesn't do much in the film until the end. Hes pretty much a non character until the final fight
Oh snap reupload. But to echo my comment in the previous: I would love a Re:View of Doom Patrol! Has been mentioned a few different times now and I think it is worthy of the attention. Plus that show could use all the eyeballs possible, and would love to hear a long form discussion from Mike about it.
I've noticed that they tend to refrain from reviewing movies, but especially TV shows, that tackle mental illness and psychological traumas. Maybe they recognize they don't have the necessary knowledge of clinical psychology to comment on them and they don't want to make fun of mental illness, or maybe it's triggering personal traumas of their own. P.S. To be clear, I know they have reviewed Joker and Split and many other blockbuster films that have mental illness as a theme.
I hope Mike writes a script and Jay directs a “Monocleman” movie staring international superstar Rich Evans. I for one would increase my Patreon subscription for this to happen.
Because two Night Court stars died within a month of each other and recasting now has a sad tint to it regardless of how they reinvent the characters? ….. I didn’t laugh because I remembered the guy that played the deadpan clerk just died.☹️
Remember, the original Suicide Squad movie were rewritten and reworked first after Guardians of the Galaxy, to add the music and humor, and then after Deadpool to make it more mature and crank up the humor even more. If DC would just act, rather than constantly react to Marvel, I think they’d be much better off. For example, their whole idea of making DC a darker universe could work great, but you can’t make it a darker while copying everything Marvel does, not to mention, trying to make Superman into a dark and brooding character was a HUGE mistake, as basically that failed for the same reason fans rejected disgruntled and grouchy old Luke Skywalker. They were both loved bright, hopeful and optimistic characters, so making them the complete opposite s a major fail.
Watched 'The Suicide Squad' and had a great time. Full disclosure I like James Gunn's work and like the bloody action combined with dark humor. If you like that you'll have a great time. Outside that the plot stuck together (you can nit pick some mistakes), the bad guys turned heroes works very well. I love Blood Sport arguing with his daughter that he never claims to care about, but you know he cares by his actions. I love at the end how the remaining team members are ready to leave and you just hear the screams of the townspeople in the background which tugs at their humanity. Too good. Also I like how they killed Rick Flag showing him to be the all around good guy hero while showing how Peacemaker is a true villain despite all of his hero talk. Too good. Not the greatest movie ever, but damn good fun!
Ya know, given the self-aware humour of the movie, I was half expecting the Suicide Squad to make some comment about how Starro was beyond their power to handle... Then Superman would fly in, defeat Starro and just fly off.
Yea i feel this is the same problem with the first one. Starro is a Justice League level guy the Suicide Squad shouldve left and left a hero deal with it, they are supposed to be asshole villains but they keep trying to make them heroes.
sounds like You wanted them to be assholes villains. They were people with a conscience (even if its their own selfish code of ethics) who happen to have done things to be in jail. They were personally responsible for releasing an alien that was going to murder an entire country, and they had the power to do something. Yes, a Justice League level hero could have done something about it very easily, but the country could have been gone by the time someone got there. I don't think any of them wanted to be a "Hero", they just wanted to do the right thing this time, but at the end of the movie they still are the kind of people that could do crime for money, just with standards.
I was so happy when Starro was revealed, I never thought a DC film would do it because it’s so out there, so when I saw hints of it in the trailer I was pretty hyped to see the film. This is how you do a suicide squad film, it did what it needed to do.

Those camera movements Jay describes when they discuss the Harley escape sequence - I got Tarantino vibes from those moments. Kill Bill and Django Unchained sprung to mind especially, which of course are pastiches on older style martial arts/western films. I loved that stuff in this movie
Its to attain that comic feels. You know that comics used panels right. And there is no inbetween between panels. Its just one moment you saw the superhero preparing to punch a guy from the pov of the guy about to get punched and the next panel you saw the guy getting punched from the side and you saw his teeth flying. A seaboot. A soft seaboot reboot prequel
I thought it was a very refreshing film, a perfect palette cleanser after years of traditional superhero films. Polka Dot man stood out for me, the actor portrayed him perfectly, down to facial expressions. At this point I'd rather watch another five of these films than even one superman film.
Wasn't that guy also in dark knight, and antman? Glad he got to shine as the obscure character
It's gotten to the point for me where even the subversive superhero movies are generic and boring.

You're missing the 'n' in "lampooning".

A lot of people hold Taskmaster in high regard. Largely because he's an actually practical supervillain, but also because of how his power also kind of pushes out memories to make room for the moves, which results in interesting character study. Yes, it's comic books.
@Doom3Guy I really hope they address this in the sequels
@Doom3Guy but to be fair, it is better for movies to be different than the comics but you’re right, it should be for the better
@Doom3Guy its a good example of different interests seeming meaningless to someone else. im sure plenty of people talk about startrek the same way mike talks about comic book fans
@Doom3Guy yeah they did taskmaster dirty in blackwidow it kind of bummed me out.
ironically enough dudes like Bloodsport or Deathstroke are way closer to Taskmaster than what they ended up with
Also you can have some really cool fight scenes but we hardly got any in black widow
Never thought a James Gunn movie would make me tear up but the exchange between Ratcatcher father and daughter is a moment that stuck with me.

Regarding the opening slaughter and nerds potentially being angry about it, every single one of those characters is real and, as someone who spent the entire lead-up to this movie super excited for TDK because I've wanted to see that character in anything for years, I was howling with laughter watching the entire distraction squad die instantly.
It was obvious they weren't gonna kill off Harley Quinn so early on, but I was pretty shocked they just murdered Captain Boomerang, whom the viewers had potentially just spent a whole movie with xD
That whole massacre felt like a slight at the movie before, aswell as being a funny twist.
They rebooted this episode faster than the Suicide Squad

Thankfully we get the full, unedited scene where Mike describes his film concept "The Monocle" in rich detail.
I love how Mike has made a career out of abusing benevolent god, Rich Evans
I hit like on this yesterday, and I did it again today.

The way the Harley Quinn action scene was shot reminded me a lot of Upgrade, which is critically underrated.
Similarly, it reminded me of the scenes with IG11 from the Mandalorian. Very controlled and precise. Very cool. I'm not sure how well it fit the character though.

Had no interest in seeing The Suicide Squad 2021 until seeing this review. It was actually a lot of fun and honestly I think James Gunn found the right mix of light and dark for the DCU.
I had no interest until i saw the poster. Looked so retro
Should've named it The Half in the Bag: The Suicide Squad since you had to redo it, just like WB.
The LEGO Batman movie was great and brought in some obscure DC characters as well while doing some unique things with the character while also being ironic (although the LEGO movies are just couple hour ads for LEGOs)
Yeah at least the first LEGO movie was almost entirely about the irony of making a LEGO movie (ad)
Imagine. Their toy ad is a more fun movie than what they tried with their main universe
The Lego movies are ads, but at least they're good movies
Actually, Tom Holland was first Spiderman in 2016, in Captain America: Civil war. That shit was teased like a year out, the highlight of the trailer, imo. So yeah, Tom Holland was being filmed as spiderman/shown to us, within/about a year after the release of The Amazing Spiderman 2.
That's not a reboot, pay attention.
This version is so comitee-driven. Release the Stoklasa cut!
I’m going to rewatch the re upload. Thanks Mike.

The interesting thing about Doom Patrol is that, while not a perfect reflection of the comics, the comics themselves are pretty weird and does a bunch of character stuff that works really well
Funny, i just started to rewatch the first season and i thought it really looks like old cheap comic books.
Cheap but brilliantly weird !
Finally, a simple explanation of COVID restrictions. Thank you, RLM.
I know it’s only been a bit over a year, but I already look at this video as the perfect COVID-19 time capsule.

jay probably haven't seen/like doom patrol as much as mike, that's why they haven't made video discussing it...

@@FumblsTheSniper Well, that and the delivery was spot on.
How is that a problem? The characters have flaws, and it's a fun movie.
sounds like You wanted them to be assholes villains.
@@Heoltor I couldn't figure out why Waller didn't want them to try to stop Starro. What made her think he/she/it would stay on the island?

I just watched this an hour ago and it's being uploaded now. Time really doesn't mean anything any more!
It doesn’t if you consume media in The Nexus.
I was so happy when Starro was revealed, I never thought a DC film would do it because it’s so out there, so when I saw hints of it in the trailer I was pretty hyped to see the film. This is how you do a suicide squad film, it did what it needed to do.

Its to attain that comic feels. You know that comics used panels right. And there is no inbetween between panels. Its just one moment you saw the superhero preparing to punch a guy from the pov of the guy about to get punched and the next panel you saw the guy getting punched from the side and you saw his teeth flying. Yeah its to achieve that sensation. Comic panels.
