Thanks for making this video man, I was debating with some people about this same topic and I said there’s no way, the Producer didn’t get royalties. I gave an artist some free beats and they blew up and I still got my backend because the label had to come to me to get the rights to the track.
I've been doing this for a long time Curtiss. I am 42 years old been doing this since I was 16. Back then, nobody was sharing their techniques or skills on how to make it in the industry. I think because of the internet, the producer field has been demystified and no longer relegated to a certain chosen few. Now those that were chosen have to return to grinding again to get attention in the masses of producers that are created daily. Now no ones comfortable!!
I agree! Well said...- I'm not one of these youngins' either but I embrace the change-- they said years ago that if you don't keep up with the change in technology......you will be left behind! I like how Timbaland has embraced it as well!
Best advice of 2018. I currently use beatstars as my marketplace and their contract setup is amazing. You literally set royalties to 50/50. Even if you sell the beat for $100-200, you will continue to get royalties.
Hey King, this was a great topic. if you want to tell this side of the Story on the Breakfast Club just say the word and the Notification Squad will blow up their social media on your behalf....who's in....? Just say the word bro
You should take that Jermaine Dupree meme and upload a side by side response on IG so that people who were considering becoming a producer don't get axnious ,great video Curtiss That man clearly didn't do his research.
Damn, Ninjas wanna stick me for my paper. I'm an old head and it has taking me awhile to come around to the new business model of music. This amazing dude named Curtiss King went and got his Moses on and started leading people to the promise land. The promise being you have more control over the digital dimes you make than the analog dollars of the old business model of someone else putting you on for your work. Old dogs can and should learn new tricks. Evolution in the music industry became a revolution when the entry barrier came down like the Berlin wall (Google it). Now everyone has the same opportunities to own a legit business AND the ability to do so without being indentured to some 20th century music contract. Young heads go get yours. Don't pay these Grumpelstiltskins no mind. Ego and relevance are very easy to swallow but hard to digest. The beat leasing detractors got so full on ego and relevance that they can't even swallow a teaspoon of reality. Old heads don't let these youngins have all of the fun. Dust yourself off and jump on in. The water is fine and it's open swim for errybody. The country club days of the music industry are over. I'ma stick this journey out and continue to ride with Moses King. You are truly helping young people and older people become better people. Sorry for the book, old heads like to rant. Outstanding look on this one Curtiss. Shine on...
Preach , you don't need the labels anymore are these guy's that's been holding us out . Get your contract. Straight on your leasing business and you will be ok
The new standard, that part. At 17 JD had already been in the music business for 10 years. He knows the business better than most. His Dad is Michael Mauldin, a real OG in the game. It's funny because I remember Gamble and Huff as well as Berry Gordy and one of my idols the late George Duke saying the same thing when we turned the MPC into a full production studio. Something Roger Linn didn't even see coming. It forever changed the game. I remember speaking to Donald Bryd about Hip Hop in 1983 at Tower Records and he said it would never last and claimed Hip Hop producers are not REAL Producers ... sound familiar? He never authorized his music to be sampled and lost out on a lot of money. But he maintained his musical integrity. Curtiss, I love your videos and your passion little brother. Keep up the great work and keep encouraging the next generation to be creative and get their money. Another great video!!!!
Love your perspective on this bro! it’s definitely difficult for some of the older generation of producers to understand this new industry and adapt to it.
Love You Man 🙏🏾🙏🏾 I always had problems in the industry, I privated all my songs cause they ain't leased, they're free for profit, imma lease all the beats the put em up again🔥🔥🔥, it's all because you taught me that the industry is too dangerous, I can't take too many chances, I gotta do it right
I'm not a music artists, but I find your channel very informative. Thank you for teach both new up and coming artists, and the general public. Not everyone is willing to take the time to offer their life experience the way you have.
Just came across your channel recently and already your tutorials have helped me improve my beats ten fold. Your expansive knowledge delivered through your positive attitude has vastly improved my own confidence in my potential to reach my goals when it comes to making a name for myself. Honestly, things were dark for a minute there but recently I've been getting back into writing poetry/lyrics and through coming across your channel I'm starting to be musically/melodically inspired again and I just wanted to thank you for that buddy. Also, if you can recommend any more quality tutorials/resources as regards producing beats in FL Studio I'd really appreciate that. While Hip-Hop is not my 'go-to' genre when I make beats I've still garnered a firm foundation (especially from the likes of those EQ tips in respect to drums) to improve upon my own sound (Darkwave/Witchouse; think CHVRN, Sidewalks and Skeletons, Ritualz, Anvil, Lorn, HEALTH). Still trying to find 'my sound' but coming across quality advice from honest producers like you has helped me massively. Peace, Love and Light brother.
Maaaan I even love after the video there’s much more relevant and great energy in these comments. There’s a movement with CURTISS KING AND HERE WE GO. KEEP PRODUCING YALL 🔑
Love this man! Been listening to your stuff as Swarley Sheen and now we have our own beat store... and a lot of that is thanks to you and your inspirations!
I'm VERY GLAD to that you spoke on this, especially on how the semi-mysterious "Exclusive Contracts" and "Streams" are broken down. Personally, I always thought that unless some type of "Publishing Waivering Clause" was included, then the Accredited/Proven Producer is STILL entitled to his share of Royalties/Mechanical Royalties/Etc. of that record.
I like your video. It's so much better to just keep creating your art. People will always have something to say. It's best to keep creating music. You are so right. This advice on your video also goes for any type of creativity you're into.
I love your videos man! I see both sides of this argument. JDs point is that now you can get beats for cheap, why would you spend the money they use too when they can get it much cheaper. Basically by saling beats that cheap, it actually puts the expensive producer out business. We all want a good deal. I'm with you though. The playing field has been leveled
Thank you, immensely bruh. Real spit. I can't say enough... I'm an audio engineering major here in TX and I can't tell you how much light was shone... thank you. #Se7en30
Thank you for this.. Came up with a lot of ole G's.. The old clicks are over.. I'm older and love the freedom of this generation. More resources , get your money.
Stumbled across Busyworks beats/Game some time ago...then found your channel shortly after-- I definitely appreciate what you brothas do-- and you're right, at one point-- it was like the producers had the "secret" sauce---people didn't wanna share this type of info. but I take my hat off to you guys for being unselfish in that way because as you can see; it's coming back to you 10 fold! You definitely get back the energy that you put out! Kudos to you brothas! I'm still in the building stage, catalogue wise but plan on having a beat store as well. I remember you mentioning beatstars as an option....or do you recommend building your own website and adding your store to your own platform??
Man, you way of speaking and your message is incredible I didn’t know you before yesterday, bumped into your channel, watched one video, then another one, and another one. Now I’m subscribed! 😂🙏 No surprise you offer a genuine guidance for people who chase their dreams but who doubt. I’m part of it 😊😅 For real: Keep it up!
im so happy you didnt quit lmao still rejoicing after that comeback video lol but i agree man! great wise words ! much appreciated! could you do a video on covering the different levels of leases?
Straight facts. Thank you. About 2 months ago i decided to take my ENTIRE brand into my own hands. Meaning, everything i make and put to sell, are put all on my personal site. I even host my videos on my site. To where if you want to watch or listen (in full), you gotta go to my site. Even my email list is from its own server so i can have 10k emails and not pay a dime a month for it. At first i was getting discouraged about it but this video complelty recharged my confidnece in it. Sorry for the long comment but thank you. No one will control where i want my brand to be! And when, not if or hope. WHEN my brand really gets poppin, no big company can do crap about it!
I think another good talking point could be that 1 copy sold is not equal to 1 stream and the amount of streams that count as a copy sold varies across platforms. This may be relevant to people that are releasing a project and are unsure about what platform to focus most of their energy towards within their marketing strategy. Also for people investing in their music and trying to set realistic goals and expectations for their returns.
WHY NOT YOU...WHY NOT RIGHT NOW... I THANK GOD FOR YOU CURTISS KING AND I PRAY THE LORD GOD WILL BLESS EVERYONE HOW HAS COME IN CONTACT WITH YOU FOR NOT BEING AFRAID TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS BY LETTING THEM KNOW AND UNDERSTAND HOW MUCH POWER THEY REALLY DO HAVE.
Jermaine Dupri was already a millionaire by the time he was like 17, I believe. He had a few groups already produced and selling records as he already was either on a label or had his own label. He had been producing since he was a little kid. So yes, Jermaine had waaaaaaaay more money than all of these little kids combined. Just wanted to make that clear.
I just copped your book "The Prosperous Hip-hop Producer" audio version bro. This video led to that decision. You are very motivational, and your info is empowering. Pen and pad ready!
I dont know who you are. I'm not even a producer. With that said, this is one time in a long time that I can thank UA-cam algorithms. One thing you said about high priced equipment, most of this equipment is, which is actually software, free. Most of these equipment/ software suppliers only want money after you make like 100,000. There are people much like you, and Mozzy, "I just wanna zee you make it."Much respect big homie.
Thanks for making this video man, I was debating with some people about this same topic and I said there’s no way, the Producer didn’t get royalties. I gave an artist some free beats and they blew up and I still got my backend because the label had to come to me to get the rights to the track.

Don't mess up that monetization.. 😂💯
Still relevant in 2019

Good advice, Curtiss. 50% music 50% business. Let's work. Blessings.

Not sure what we would do without honest producers, with integrity, like yourself, out here in the game. 🙏🙏

Like you said...as long as dude gets paid for greater success with that beat then he can use that to be a go to producer at the end of the day 💯
Much needed information
Love you guys ✊🏽✊🏽
You are a guidance for producers! Happy I watched another video today ✊
Exclusive Rights/ Copyrights. 2 different things. Exclusive rights just means I can't resell the beat. Great Video.
Thank you 🙏
Platinum content man 🔥
Curtis, you know anything about the Davis Act? DJ Toomp posted on this. I think it has something to do with Performance Rights shares for producers.
AG Keyz I’m doing some research on myself. Just saw that Toomp post the other day.
Yeah would love a video bout this
