Yes it was, with it's supercharger/turbo configuration it had unequaled performance at high altitude compared to any of the common fighter's that were fielded by the Luftwaffe, and even the occasional German fighter that had a high altitude supercharger system was no match for the beast, on one mission 3 P47's of the 56th Fighter Group ran across 11 FW 190 long nose Dora's, when it was over 8 of the Dora's were shot down with the remaining 3 sent running for home with their tails between their legs without a single bullet hole in any of the three P47's.
It's the fighter that broke the back of the Luftwaffe in the critical first three months of 1944 shooting down 570 out of the 873 German fighter's shot down during that time period, it's the fighter that blasted all the 100+ victory German aces out of the sky so by the time the P51 came along it was fighting mostly against poorly trained German pilots fighting in planes they had as little as 10 hours training time in, that's why the P51 has the record it does, the P47 softened up the Luftwaffe for it.
Then when it was given the job of destroying the Wehrmacht it proved equally as devastating against it destroying over 9,000 locomotives and thousands of tanks, artillery pieces, and every variety of vehicle and weapon the German army had.
Several months ago I saw a P47 pilot in an interview here on UA-cam talk about interviewing a German POW during the war who was an infantryman, he said that by the end of the war they got very good at dismounting trucks they were being transported in and running for cover from the constant harassment from Allied fighter's, he said that they got to the point where they could tell by the sound what type of fighter was attacking them before they even saw them, P51's would make a whistling sound, Typhoons had their own distinctive sound and so on and so forth for the different Allied fighter's, but when a P47 attacked between it's 18 cylinder 2,000+ horsepower Pratt&Whitney R2800 engine and it's eight .50 caliber guns it sounded like "The gates of hell opened up".
The P47 was the true air superiority fighter that gained control of the skies over Europe, by the time the P51 came along air superiority had already been achieved by the P47 and to a certain degree also the P38, and both of them were escorting bombers over Berlin weeks before P51's were doing it, but the P51 has always been given credit for being the fighter that achieved air superiority and was the first that could escort bombers deep into Germany because the "Bomber Mafia" Generals that ran the USAAF started that disinformation campaign to keep from getting drug in front of a Congressional inquiry over the heavy losses of bombers and their crews on those early unescorted raids because they were trying to prove their concept that the bombers could fight their way to the targets and back unescorted, the reality is had the fighter's in theater at the time been allowed to use drop tanks they could have escorted the bombers to every single target they went to on those early missions, they variant of the P47 that was escorting bombers over Berlin before P51's were had already been delivered to the fighter groups months before "Black Thursday", with the advent of the P47D-15 they had the under wing pylons that could use the US made all metal pressurized drop tanks, delivery records show that the 56th Fighter Group had already received the P47D-15 in April of 1943, four months before the first Schweinfert mission, and as far as the P38 goes, which was actually the first fighter that escorted bombers over Berlin the long range mission to kill Admiral Yamamoto in the Pacific happened months before the first Schweinfert mission and the distance they flew on the Yamamoto mission exceeded the distance of any bomber mission flown in the ETO during the entire air war in Europe.
The Bomber Mafia Generals even went as far as doctoring up the late war report on fighter ranges to make it appear that the variant's of the fighter's in Europe early on didn't have the range to escort the bombers all the way to their targets, the fact is even before the P47D-15 the earlier variant's still had the ability to use drop tanks, starting with the P47C-2 they had the shackles to mount drop tanks, they simply weren't provided with them nor did the orders on how to configure the P47's for escort missions include drop tanks as being part of the fighter's load out, but records from fighter sweep missions at that very same time where unit commander's had horse traded with the British to obtain their pressed paper disposable drop tanks show they flew distances where using the relay method for fighter escort would have enabled them to escort the bombers to those early targets.
But after those disastrous unescorted early missions the Bomber Mafia Generals who ran everything got real busy covering their asses to keep from having to answer up for the heavy losses of bombers and their crews because they were trying to prove their concept, they had the press corps print stories that the fighter's in theater at the time didn't have the range then they had the press corps print stories about how the P51 came along and saved the day, it's those stories that were printed at the time along with that falsified late war report on fighter ranges and each other's books that aviation writer's over the years have used as source material to keep repeating the same myth over the years about the fighter's at the time not having the range to escort bombers on the early raids, but in recent years some aviation writer's have done the research and the truth about everything concerning those early raids is slowly coming out.
You gotta give the Bomber Mafia Generals credit, they came up with a way of covering their asses that has stuck all these years.

I have had more kills with the T-bolt than any other, plus ground attack is a blast, as well as anti ship missions. It is one rugged tough fighter. I don't play video games but I've read reviews similar to your's about the P47 from other people who play them.
Don't know if you're familiar with it but there's a UA-cam channel called Greg's Airplane's and Automobiles, Greg is an airline pilot meaning he's educated in aircraft, aeronautics and the mathematics of flight well beyond the level of someone who flies Cessna's on the weekend plus in the late 80's as one of his first job's in aviation he flew a cargo plane that was powered by two Pratt&Whitney R2800 engine's, so he's very familiar with that engine, he did a series of videos on the P47 and one is dedicated to the range of them, it's titled "P47 pt 6; Range, deceit and treachery", it's about the true range of the P47 and the fact that the variant's in the ETO at the time of the early raids could indeed have escorted the bombers to their targets had they been allowed, basically by denying them the use of drop tanks the Bomber Mafia Generals essentially hobbled them so they didn't have the range, he also using the USAAF's own math proves that the late war report on fighter ranges is doctored up to make it appear that even with drop tanks they couldn't have done it, he uses their own math on fuel consumption for take off, climb to altitude, time to assemble the flight, fuel consumption for range and even the alloted fuel consumption for 15 minutes combat time to prove the age old narrative that the fighter's in Europe at the time is false that they couldn't have escorted the bombers to targets like Schweinfert and Regensburg.
The points I made about the P47D-15 using the all metal US made pressurized drop tanks being one of the variant's that indeed did escort bombers over Berlin before P51's did and the fact that the 56th Fighter Group had already received them in April of 1943, months before "Black Thursday" is something I accidentally stumbled across myself, he doesn't mention that in his video on the P47's range, I was looking at a list of the different P47 variant's and their delivery dates when I noticed that the 56th had started receiving them in April of 43.
And the range of the P38, which like the P47 had also been escorting bombers over Berlin before P51's, were actually the first of the two to do it, Greg doesn't cover anything about their range and the fact that they also had been over Berlin before the P51 but I got to thinking one day about the Yamamoto mission in the Pacific so I looked it up and lo and behold it was in April of 43 also months before the Schweinfert mission, I even looked up the variant's used for that mission and don't you know the same one's were being used in Europe, but of course without being provided drop tanks.
Something else about the P47's range I stumbled across that's an indication that the late war report on fighter ranges is a sham is a USAAF test report dated July of 1945 on the P47 that among other things states that fuel consumption is "10 to 15% less than officially listed fuel consumption rate listed in the flight manual", if you read the entire report it lists all the testing parameters and equipment used, for fuel consumption the aircraft's own consumption rate guage wasn't used for that measurement, instead an in-line meter was installed that had been calibrated, since the fuel consumption was 10 to 15% less than officially listed then the range of course would be 10 to 15% greater.
One important thing to understand is that no fighter, not even the P51, could take off with the bombers and fly all the way to the targets and back with them because the speed and altitude that the bombers achieved their maximum range was different from the speed and altitude that the fighter's achieved their maximum range, when the fighter's were in the presence of the bombers and actually flying along with them they were guzzling fuel because of the reduced speed, escort missions were done using the relay method, one flight of fighter's would escort the bombers on their first leg of their mission, then another flight of fighter's that took off an hour or so after them would catch up by flying at their speed that gave them maximum range and relieve the first flight of fighter's, they would turn back for home and fly at the speed giving them maximum range and at some point attack targets of opportunity along the way provided they had fuel for it, the second flight of fighter's usually would be the one's that took them over the target and would have enough fuel for 15 minutes of combat at those throttle settings, about the time the 2nd flight of fighter's and the bombers would be coming off the target a third flight would show up to relieve them so they could throttle up and make it home at the speed required for maximum range, the third flight usually had the fuel to escort them all the way back because they didn't have to use the throttle settings required for combat, some of the deepest penetration mission's took 4 relays of fighter's to do it, and if at any point a flight of fighter's missed hooking up with the bombers due to a navigation error on someone's part or the bombers couldn't bomb their primary target because of weather or something and had to switch to another target they'd have to fly that leg of the mission unescorted because the fighter's with them at the time had to go to their speed and altitude for maximum range or they wouldn't have made it back, it's because of the relay system that sometimes you'll read or hear in an interview about how there was already a fight going on when a flight of fighter's met up with the bombers, that's that leg of the relay showing up when everything's already a fur ball, in that case they were just showing up in time because the fighter's that were already with the bombers could only fight for 15 minutes, that's all the fuel they had allotted for aerial combat and after 15 minutes they had to disengage and head for home or they'd have never made it back.
Gives you a lot of respect for the mission planners who had to do all the math to figure out when each leg of the relay had to take off to make everything work out.
People who think that a single flight of fighter's could fly all the way there and back with the bombers are people who'll look up the range of a fighter on Wikipedia then Google the straight line distance from London to Berlin and think it's proof, it's far more complicated than that, they don't account for time to assemble a flight of fighter's in the sky, their increased fuel consumption flying at the speed of the bombers, fuel consumption at the throttle settings for combat, the maximum range listed in Wikipedia for a fighter is a single plane taking off and flying in a straight line at it's most fuel efficient speed and altitude but it was far more complicated than that on an escort mission, and then you have the fact that the bombers never flew in a straight line from their base to a target, there was always at least one "dog leg" in the mission to confuse the enemy making it look like they were flying to a different target.
Edit; Was the P51 a great fighter? Yes it was.
Did it change the course of the war as has been reported over the years? No it didn't.
