- So alongside the F1, Indycar also made a start to its 2023 season in St. Petersburg, and oh boy, what a race we had in store! It was drama and incident after incident, so here's my take on the whole weekend!

Grosjean did squeeze him when trying an outside pass, however.
Grosjean made it very tight for McLaughlin, and McLaughlin couldn't hold it. But there was a way for both of those cars to make it through that corner if Grosjean takes a self-preservationist attitude towards his race approach. Of course, he's never approached racing like that, so no big surprise lol
McLaughlin's at fault, but sometimes you've got to just live to fight another day.
I’ve never had such an emotional rollercoaster in one day. From watching Verstappen and Alonso get on the podium to then seeing grosjean get punted out of the race lead… very high to very low lmao
Bahrain was like 50/50 for me: Alonso made me happy, Leclerc made me sad, and man I’m bored of max winning lmao

I mean it's sad that F1 reliability is goos consistent and the gap between is too big that let everyone thinks is abit boring

Grosjean sucks, I'm surprised he lasted as long as he did in F1.
Considering the difference in McLaren's performance between F1 and IndyCar. I have now discovered that I will be watching IndyCar this year.
Edit: 6 months later this comment looks really stupid, however that's a testament to how insane this year has been

Well Mclaren is pretty much the only team you can watch as a newcomer to Indycar cause all the other teams just hit the random button for their liveries and colors before each race, so it's almost impossible to know who's who at a glance if you're new to it. :/
F1 will never know you went away.
@@free4fire It's not entirely that. Grosjean will be in that yellow DHL all season, Herta in the Gainbridge, Dixon in the PNC, Power in the Verizon, and the MSR boys in Pink. But there are no official team points so it's not quite as important.

6:05 Pato didn't hit the pit limiter. It was another case of poor Mclaren durability with a plenum fire. Basically, the Florida humidity in the air caused a hiccup in the fuel-air ratio upon combustion, thus leaving a brief moment of no power.
Engine zigged when it should've zagged. Gutted for Pato tho, but surprisingly happy with the racing overall.
I was so mad at Scott for putting Grosjean in the wall, but at the end of the day it was just a miss in judgement and those thing happened a lot.

I think it's a bit unfair to say Herta binned it into the wall since it was Power's divebomb and subsequent contact which sent him into the wall
You shouldn't take it that seriously. He named it comedy review for a reason
We should start a count of how many incidents Power is responsible for, cause every season, without fail, he's responsible for let's just say a few.

Having watched F1 for several years I decided to tune into Indy yesterdaym.. I was surprisingly blown away by how competitive it is

It's insane how close the top 10 plus are in IndyCar. Almost always a great product to watch!
Indycar is a night of super hot freaky sex with an 8. F1 is a bland handjob from a 10 while she looks at her phone the whole time.
I'm glad you liked it. As an American fan of both F1 and Indycar I've been hoping F1-only fans would check out what's happening over here. They're both great series but they each have their own charms. If you want the pinnacle of motorsport you watch F1. If you want to see really fast cars and very competitive racing you can watch IndyCar.
It is spec racing, so as to keep everyone close.
That race was diabolical. That's why I've come to respect and appreciate indycar. Been watching it more last year than F1. This season is about to get Spicer in my opinion

I've seen people grumbling about F1 and F2 drivers ending up in IndyCar but I don't mind at all. They're all great drivers which makes the product better and they can bring in new fans like you. I actually spent all of last year hoping Daniel Ricciardo would come to IndyCar. He's may favorite driver, I think he'd do very well in the series and he could bring even more fans.

God damn that was an emotional roller coaster. Felt crushed that Romain got taken out and just when you thought that Pato was going to win his engine has a misfire which gave the win to Marcus. Unreal.
Marcus had both fresher tyres and more push to pass than Pato, it was quite clear Marcus would have won anyway. Also, I clearly doubt that Patos car did whatever he claimed, that Pato accidently pushed the pit speed limiter is more likely.
@@MrNorberg Marcus had more push to pass but did you see the track? There was marbles everywhere. I don't think passing would be that easy for him considering that it's slippery out there. But then again who knows. I think Pato fucked up. Just trying to hide it. I love Pato he's my guy but c'mon just admit it when you fucked up dude.
As a Mclaren fan, i was on heavy hopium that the Indycar side of things can make things better after that disaster of a first race for the F1 side. But alas the Chevy engine decided to make some mini fireworks in the plenum and gave away the win to Ericsson. Motorsports can be a fickle bitch tho.
@@captainjosue the engineer sais right after it happend there was this thing in the engine, i doubt he would act that fast with a plausable explanation when pato would have fat fingered the pit limiter
@@olerothemberg3869 you're right. I was reading and yes there was a little problem with his engine.
1. Will Power bumped out Herta and got a Penalty. 2. Pato didn’t hit the PL, his engine “burped” when he was getting back the throttle (too much air not enough fuel in the cylinder).
6:05 It wasn't hitting the Pit Limiter, it was a brief engine malfunction. Plenum fire. Basically the thing coughed hard.
Montreal may have the Wall of Champions, but St Petersburg seems to have the Wall of All.
Couple of small points: Herta might have found the tyre barrier but it wasn't on his own. Got punted by Will Power going for a gap that was never, ever going to be there. O'Ward's problem wasn't (apparently) a pit lane limiter but a 'plenum issue', the pit lane limited was speculation by the Indycar commentary team who are, collectively, about as much use a chocolate kettle (odd considering their combined experiences).
Can I just echo the 'you should watch Indycar' part though? Most races are at least interesting with pit stop strategy and refuelling actually allowing drivers to make a difference. They can usually follow closely without shredding tyres and drivers aren't exactly afraid to mix it up.
O'Ward didn't hit the pit limiter. Due to the high humidity in St Pete, he actually had a small explosion in the intake. That small explosion robbed the engine of fresh air for a moment, and the engine stumbled to stay lit. But it did sound like a pit limiter.
Utter Chaos.... leads to a wonderful Comedy Review and Marcus Ericson not losing his seat to Charles Leclerc apparently
McLaughlin's a great driver, had track position but knowing Grosjean, probably could've relented on those cold tires. Scott would've charged him down later, however, we were deprived of a great race, then Ericcson stole the main prize from O'Ward, a bit of a joke that!
AMSP said it wasnt the pit limiter but an engine overboost issue with the plenum btw. al thought that might be to save face

Good to see he is doing well(ish) in Indycar tho. Being able to lead a race for about 3/4th of the time and scoring pole is miles ahead of his record at Alpha Romeo.

Correction. Pato DID NOT hit the pit speed limiter button, it was an over-boost in the engine that caused it to lose power.
This is my my home race literally- I live 4 blocks from track. This was the roughest race there since 2020 with the amount of crashes and how violent they were

Not only did we have action and chaos. We were also allowed to see it unlike some other forms of open wheel motorsport who decides that we are too sensitive and needs to be sheltered from the horrors of the world at any cost
It helps Indy Car unlike F1 doesn't control what people see at home, the broadcasters do. And I can remember many times either whoever is doing the announcing or the analysis saying "if we could get a replay of that..." and 5 seconds later, there's the replay.

I feel like I should have watched this. It could have given me the kind of trainwreck content I was missing in the Bahrain GP.
Definitely give it a try next time is on! Next race is next month at Texas motor speedway! But if you would rather a road or street course to watch there are a lot more coming!
Awesome vid!!! The whole thing was just such an emotional rollercoaster but as a life long Indy car fan, not the first time. Won't be the last either. And for the newbies, this level of close racing, minus the monster crashes, is the norm in Indy, especially on the road courses and temporary street circuits.

I mean, at Cleveland in 1982 they go the tower controller to run through the grid and give it an ATC spin. Evidently, the whole field wanted to reenact this.

Dude I just watched that race with that espn ATC grid intro gimmick on an old CART (IndyCar 80's-90's) binge. Epic. Entire seasons are playlisted on YT. It's actually the '83 Cleveland airport 'street course' race, and it's bananas. It was so hot and humid, they're pouring buckets of water on drivers during pits. Tony Bettenhausen had to retire due to, literally, heat stroke, and when his relief driver Kevin Cogan jumped in to take over it immediately CAUGHT FIRE before he got off pit row. Al Unser was dying from heat and wanted to quit but no other driver would take the seat...and he wins. This was the first indycar street race I have watched, what a sweet entry to the sport
To be fair, Alonso got absolutely launched by lance stroll, airborne and into the wall and continued to p7 in Austin last year
And I thought F1 was going to be exciting this year, Indy cars have already put that question to bed, and sang a lullaby too. So F1 drivers don't forget to ask for your glass of water before you go to bed. Because we all know that milk is for the Indy drivers.

Thanks for the IndyCar coverage. I've been so far up F1's ahole the last few years I forgot how good the racing can be. Now if the TV coverage would just step it up! Hope to make it to the Grand Prix of Portland this year. Its either that or take out a second mortgage to go to F1 Las Vegas and watch the American version of Monaco.

I feel like I immediately jinxed Romain. My dad asked me if my driver was doing well and I told him No, he got crashed out (Colton) but his teammate is racing for the win. Then a few seconds later Scott had locked up.
i was at the race turn4 and saw kirkwood flying and the leaders crash out it was insanity. Maximum chaos. Poor oward was already cheering to us leading behind the safety car only to lose at the end...

Was at the race, sat in the park near turns 8 and 9. got to watch Herta smash his car on turn 8. after they towed it away they parked his car practically next to the portopoties, so everyone waiting to shit got some cool pics.
To be fair to Herta, he got screwed by Will Power. Power left no room, made contact, and got penalized for it.
I like the IndyCar vids in addition to F1, IndyCar is more fun to watch and will be more and more since Max is gonna win every race except the ones he lets Checko take. Also McLaren has a chance in IndyCar

I was at the mid ohio race last year, and a road to indy car goes around with the name Sting Ray on the tail, and got me real confused. Even more confused when I found out that's his real name, given at birth by conscious parents 😅 confusion aside I'm chuffed to see him in the big car this year! (My new favorite driver too!)

I’m a huge F1 fan, but Indy is really growing on me, hugely underrated series, very very enjoyable to watch, less politics, I love it.

That track is not wide enough to handle a race with that many cars. Combine that with alot of bad driving and hence all the wrecks
Always felt indycar was an oddly nice mix of the excitement, close racing, crashing of NASCAR, but the speed and track layouts of f1…its interesting to see

Windshields on open wheel cars look hideous, wow.
Turn 4 ate cars all weekend. Jamie Chadwick's NXT race showed the same right handed maw of cautions that made it all a slog.
The bit that I don’t understand about indycar, is that the cars appear to have next to no downforce, for the speed of the cars, and they understeer like crazy. They all seem to be death traps which have been poorly designed 🤔
They do look extremely clumsy.
I think that was just St. Pete as far as understeer. Usually the fast guys prefer oversteer, but with the repave and bumps people were having issues in practice with locking rear tires up. But yes, they have much lower downforce on purpose, so the cars can race closer, without as much dirty air. IMO less downforce not only means less dirty air, but more skill in the hands of drivers.

what an utterly mad race this was, absolutely loved it. very much easily confirms why Indycar is my main motorsport that i watch. great racing from this field, and good job from callum ilott, to have worked his way from 22nd to 5th.

I was at turn 1 in person for this race. If all the red flags wasn't enough having to watch Grosjean get taken out by Mclaughlin being a Dumbass was the ultimate insult.
