This video demonstrates one way to add chlorine shock to a pool. I HIGHLY SUGGEST you follow the directions on the package. The way I show here is NOT the correct way to do this, but I find it to be much easier and much faster than doing it the "right way".
The "correct" way to do this is to dissolve the shock in a bucket full of water, then spill this around the edges of the pool. The problem is, it never all dissolves. That's going to leave chlorine granules on the floor of your pool, damaging it. That's going to force you to brush the floor of your pool to help try and get those to dissolve, but there's always some left, so you're just doing damage by doing the right thing.
An explanation of my reasoning: By getting the filter out of the equation, you prevent the shock from attacking the filter grids and burning holes through it. Once the filter is eliminated and you just have good, strong water flow through the skimmer, the fast-moving water will dissolve the powdered shock probably before it even reaches the pump. If not, it will be dissolved by the time it re-enters the pool, and super-chlorination happening at that time is of very short duration and should not do any long-term damage to the piping and pump. I always run the pump overnight after shocking to ensure the water is well-mixed.
If you insist that I'm still doing this wrong, I will say this: I'm not doing it wrong, I'm doing it my way, and you just don't like the fact that I found a better way to do something. And for those who will say that I will burn my pump out, I have been doing this for 17 years without issue.
