Pool Opening 2024, Part 11 - Backwashing The Filter For The First Time Since Open

It was time to finally backwash. Vacuuming out all the green to waste, manually, did the trick so it seems.
When the filter pressure on the gauge reads about 10 PSI higher than with a clean filter, it's time to backwash. Shut the pump, turn the multiport valve (or adjust the valves on your equipment) to the backwash position and turn the pump back on. Watch the sight glass. Once the water runs mostly clear, switch to rinse, run for about 30 seconds to a minute, then backwash again, then rinse, and perhaps a third cycle if the pool is exceptionally dirty.
Then go back to normal filtration and immediately replenish the D.E. in your filter. How much depends on the square footage of the grids. Take the square footage and round up. For example, my filter is a Hayward 4820, that has 48 square feet of filtering. Round it off to 50, divide by 10, and that's how much to put in--5 scoops. You can of course adjust that up or down a scoop without causing a problem either way. I usually put in 4, myself.

Like I said when I was there, how in the world can you possibly damage the spider gasket when the valve mechanism isn't even in contact with said gasket when the handle is pushed down and being turned?? Some of those "pool people" should not be around pools.

That's the entire point I'm making. Even the "pros" certainly aren't. Same thing with A/C service, that guy had no clue.
