He shot out every possible window, bashed open every ventilation cover with a baseball bat, smashed the keypads on the vaults, broke every window, shot out every TV, cut cable lines, broke the hinges off every door, bashed executives worthless yet pretty paintings off their walls: anything he could access he destroyed, and to end it? He shot all the cameras watching him until that point. The next day the bank agents came back to see the place in tatters, the bank had to get $5.7M spent to fix or replace everything. The initial group and their incriminating book led to a dead-end in the case, and the paintings were already handed off by the time they got arrested.

They did not know how to get into contact with buyers, and the police were hot on their tail, arresting everyone involved. At that point it would be worth it just to pay someone to take it. Supply was low but demand was low too.

@@PannierLaw If you consider the longterm it really didn't matter much, the break in the case was the FBI overhearing the sale setup by sheer coincidence because they were already observing one of the involved parties for drug activity. The initial group and their incriminating book led to a dead-end in the case, and the paintings were already handed off by the time they got arrested.

@@GelberStuhl It's not 200,000$ it was 200,000 Swedish Krona, which at the time was more like 28,000$. To be fair, the painting by that point was more of a liability than an asset. They did not know how to get into contact with buyers, and the police were hot on their tail, arresting everyone involved. At that point it would be worth it just to pay someone to take it. Supply was low but demand was low too.

I mean, if the job is well done and painting location is not traceable then they're probably forever "safe" in the hands of the rich buyer. There are hundreds of thousands of mansions out there with millions upon millions of replicas of famous paintings, you'd have to have REALLY strong suspicions to assume a painting you saw at a rich dude's house is the stolen deal. And even then, how would you know it is?
You just need to find a rich person with no morals who's into art in a country that basically gives no fuck about interpol (since most paintings are from european artists) and helps you smuggle it out of the country you stole it from. SA or China comes to mind. Just imagine Kashogi sitting in his villa surrounded by stolen things, who's gonna sue him?
It's not that the goods are too hot, these guys were just idiots who didn't get a buyer lined up before the heist went down.
