I can play this every day and every day I stop what I'm doing to listen. It clears all the junk and noise out of my head. Unbelievably clean, expressive, lyrical, lonesome, unforced. Superb. Thank god for Tim and Darrell. Great production by BBC. Long Time Gone ...Keep You Lamp Trimmed and Burning ... These guys are great American poets. We all need something to shoot for.
I had the privilege of meeting Darrel Scott at a festival we both got to play at and I couldn’t help but let him know that he and Tim O’Brien changed my life. It’s some of the most amazing music.
I used to sing this song at every gig, without fail. Hearing it the first time, it was as though Tim had written it about my life. Now I am again reminded of it's great tenderness. Back out to the front burner it goes. A blessing in song. Thanks boys!
got the chance to see Tim O'Brien play this year in a tiny venue in Camden town London. He was breathtaking. He's been my first official experience of a major bluegrass artist live, and it was so powerful it brought me to tears. He has the most beautiful voice, and he's a truly talented musician ( he played the banjo, mandolin, violin and guitar that night). And to round it all off, he's the nicest guy ever, he sung my request, had a chat with us, and gave my sister a hug : incredible !
Tim O'Brien and Darrell Scott are more powerful as a combo than any other duo of musicians I've ever heard. When backed by musicians of like quality such as this, it only makes them all that much better.
I love getting in the wind on my bike, hauling ass down the road, hair in the wind, listening to this amazing artist... Riding through the country, burning up the miles puts me in a good place... Thanks Tim!!!
You gentlemen are are an amazing group of angelic intergalactic juggernauts of musical excellence. I love and appreciate everything you all have done. Thank you south for all the hope, love, and inspiration. I don't know if any of your group looks at this, but of anybody gets this. You guys changed the lives of a big group suburban kids lives. For my friends and myself, thank you. Jimmy O. and al the good people you have touched.
Nothing short of pure magic. A performance of incredible beauty and deserved reverence from musicians and appreciators of all kinds. Be any one of these musicians and play like like this and you have found the pot of gold 🌈
This is exceptional, inspiring music, played by great musicians. If the public had enough soul, this would be popular music. Unfortunately the great majority of the public prefer to be spoon fed pabulum. Ah well. I get to enjoy it anyhow ;)
+MrMusicguyma I'm regularly encouraged by music-lovers I meet & swap stories with, about TAS. We're out there. Tim O'Brien is a super-star to us. Check out Hot Rize.
TAS is the best. Oh Yeah, as a bluegrass /Celtic/blues/Cajun /rockabilly /roots/etc., player and singer myself, I have followed Hot Rize from the beginning, (I'm old) ;)
you really have to be on the look out : I'm a big fan of Tim O'Brien and was lucky enough to notice he was playing in london in feb this year. I went to see him in this tiny venue in camden for an evening of solo performance, and even had the chance to chat with him. He was amazing, an experience I'll never forget. So being in the UK doesn't mean you have to miss out !
He is awesome. I shook his hand at the Kate Wolf Folk Festival a couple years ago ... he was riding a bike around and catching the music. I just about died though cuz I'm such a fan. He was really gracious.
Me too... talked a bit while he was getting his instuments out and acclimated under a big ol tree at the Arlo Hagler Memorial stage...GREAT show!!! I guess it was 2002 or 3?? I know he was there with a hot group of very young players he put together it was "The Traveler" release time I believe....
it was this video (and the Hector The Hero rendition by Jenna Reid and the Julie Fowlis footage) that made me go and harass a little record shop over here in faraway Belgium to order this DVD for me, and after a very long 2 month wait I finally got hold of them... thank you so much for posting this music and keep up your good work!
It was following my introduction to Darrell Scott's music that I subsequently discovered Tim O'Brien, (and Paul Brady). These guys are what is best in music. Know your instrument(s), play and sing with passion and pride. What price a ticket to Scott/O'Brien/Brady/Molsky? I'm sooo there.
I bought the cd this tune is on. Though I had to get through the music of scotland. This cd isnt sold here in the USA. Tim seems to tour alot in europe. I really dig he and darrell scott.
Fantastic musician . Just caught him live as part of Transatlantic Sessions in Derry 19'. Interesting to hear his granny is from close to Letterkenny, where we came in from . Respect .
just thought I'd let you know, Tim O'Brien is playing in the UK in November. He's doing 2 gigs in London and you can get your tickets online. It's quite cheap and it's definitely worth it, so check it out ...
Just a note that this song will be on Darrell and Tim's new CD and they're doing a Kickstarter drive to help with production and promotion costs. Just search for "Memories & Moments" on Kickstarter and you should find it. It's fully funded, but you can get the album a bit early if you join in the next few days. Full disclosure: I'm a backer of the Kickstarter project but not affiliated with the guys and have nothing to gain from this, just spreading the word to fellow fans.
he's a brilliant musician and singer, and he's also got a great sense of humour, as you say. I saw him live in feb this year and he was such a nice guy, he always had something funny to say between songs, not stupid mind you, but genuinely smart as well as hilarious. I would recommend seeing him live to everyone ! Soo talented... I'm sure I've seen a UA-cam video were he's being funny. His commentary of Nickel Creek on Bluegrassjourney is a good reflection of his general attitude though.
@martin081980 This song is in F. Basically Bb-Dm-C, Chorus is Bb-F-Bb-F-Dm-C-Bb. I can't figure out the time for the life of me, though, it's one of those weird splits that Tim is so fond of and that always drive me nuts trying to count! What a gorgeous song.
Tricky little song to learn! lots of changes and close ones too! BUT I have NOT given up and never will. Hubby has it down pat.. but me, well..I'm a bit slower on the uptake since neither of us read music!
They put out an album called "Real Time" which I highly suggest to anyone. They set up some recording equipment in the living room and just started jammin in "real time" hence the name. Good stuff/
I can play this every day and every day I stop what I'm doing to listen. It clears all the junk and noise out of my head. Unbelievably clean, expressive, lyrical, lonesome, unforced. Superb. Thank god for Tim and Darrell.

I'm not sure music gets any better than this. Equal maybe, but not better. Simply awesome
Mr. O'Brien catches the lonesome in a drifter's soul in this song from the CD, "Rock In My Shoes."
He's been a sweet blessing to this world.
Mikolas Josef brought me here... it is indeed a good song...
There are nights like this when only Tim will do
I used to sing this song at every gig, without fail. Hearing it the first time, it was as though Tim had written it about my life. Now I am again reminded of it's great tenderness. Back out to the front burner it goes. A blessing in song. Thanks boys!
The most talented guys in Nashville. All "triple threats." All can write, play and sing. I love this town...
I thought I had already heard all of the best traveling songs out there. Add this one to the list! Another great song by Tim with Darrell.
It's up there in the loneliness song category, too.
please do guy-girl voices...so beautifull
his voice is absolutely beautiful. He's a great player of course, but what a singer! heartbreakingly good.
I want to sing with this circle of such beautiful souls.

This song haunts me bones so sweetly. Love
first time i have heard this song, what a great song, i will definetly look out for his stuff....awesome.....from a guy who listens to metal music....
This song always blows me away. God damn Tim O brien is AMAZING
God's name is not a cuss word.
Fills my heart and feeds my soul! I picture his painting in my mind.
I love getting in the wind on my bike, hauling ass down the road, hair in the wind, listening to this amazing artist... Riding through the country, burning up the miles puts me in a good place... Thanks Tim!!!
Absolutely love this song! It has everything, and the players are unbelievable!!
This is the most beautiful music for fall in the North Carolina mountains.

Wow ...that make me cry.its a great song. I loved
still hits me like it did a decade ago.
This is exceptional, inspiring music, played by great musicians. If the public had enough soul, this would be popular music. Unfortunately the great majority of the public prefer to be spoon fed pabulum. Ah well. I get to enjoy it anyhow ;)

Jesus, quit whining, and enjoy it without denigrating others.
i love at how like 1:15 everyone harmonizes and how Darrel's eyes open up. so damn cool! wish i cud be jamming with these guys
Powerful stuff, right here.

Fantastic! Beautiful, touching. Wonderful talent that makes me feel so lucky that I can hear.
Made up my mind to go
Some place so far away, I headed west
Without a sad goodbye
No hugs or tears that way, it's probably for the best
Sent cards along the way
Said I was looking for a brand new life
I never settled down
My wanderlust would always cut the ties like a knife
Sometimes the lonesome wind
Calls out just like it knows me
And on a night like this
When I don't know where to go, he shows me the way
He knows me, my brother wind
He's lonely too and he takes me away
I always looked ahead
I was so afraid that I'd be caught behind
Followed a crooked stream
To places I'd never seen and one more highway sign
Just like some other guys
I count the hours 'til the day will end
But it's not so I can rest
For me it's the time that's best for talking to my friend
Cause he knows me, my brother wind
He's lonely too and he takes me away
Now half my life is gone
The only home I have is open road
My skin is cracked and brown
A mirror to the dessert ground and the dusty wind that blows
I never made a mark
Just scattered footsteps on the shifting sand
Whatever pushes me
It's something only he can understand
He knows me, my brother wind
He's lonely too and he takes me away

One of my favorite songs.. determined to learn it!!
Simply amazing!! Gives me chills every time I hear it! (And I listen to it a lot!)
He is awesome. I shook his hand at the Kate Wolf Folk Festival a couple years ago ... he was riding a bike around and catching the music. I just about died though cuz I'm such a fan. He was really gracious.

Listening to this for the first time since I watched "Hell or High Water". Both works of art, things of beauty.
This song is absolutely incredible!

Saw him play this last night with Jan in Cambridge. I had never heard it before. His guitar is so rich on this. A gorgeous song.
Tim and Darrell's singing on this piece leaves goose bumps!
Music! Such beautiful, sweet, REAL music!
Loved this song performed with the Wheeling Symphony during "Celebrate America" in Clarksburg, WV on July 3, 2018. Enjoyed listening here again!
