Ancient MMORPG's - Dransik [Retrospective]

  • The late 90s into the early millennium was a fascinating time for gaming, particularly MMORPG's. If you went back and played any of these games in their prime, you'd find that they are vastly different than what we have today... But I want to take a closer look at some of them. Dransik, created by Jason Ely, otherwise known as Lothgar, is one of the most endearing yet intense MMO's I've ever experienced. Come take a look.

    This game was unlike ANYTHING that has come since then. It's not just the nostalgia but there's a very substantial reason why no online game since those days has come even close to the few goldies from late 90's. COMMUNITY. The game was so ruthless and unforgiving that players needed eachother if they wanted to get anywhere in the world. You could never become a powerful player in this game as a lone wolf and if you acted like a moron you got treated accordingly, you had your whole property on the line so you really needed to consider your actions and reactions and live with the consequences. Fight or flight? Run your mouth or stfu? Team up with good people like yourself and fight together to help eachother to be able to play in peace OR team up with absolutely toxic and horrible people and prey upon others corpsecamping them until they have NOTHING left to loot? Your choice.
    You had the freedom to be whoever you wanted to be in this game and you had the tools to project it. The amount of drama, the amount of grief, the amount of joy and the amount of mirth. They all stemmed from the very simple idea which drove the game forward. You can lose everything, but you can also win everything. You can have yourself become a pariah and be driven out of the game where your only option is to quit or change your identity because you're always preyed upon and never safe. Or you can strive to become an exalted hero and a mythical avatar who people look upon in awe and wonder. Whichever was the path you took, people would remember your name. You had a place in the world.
    I hail all my old friends and foes from Dransik. This game was larger than life to me when I was pre-teen back in the late 90's and early 2000's. I only wish kids nowadays could feel what we felt back then. Or maybe they can, I wouldn't know. I hope they do :)

    Used to play for years, remembering the legendary Dragoneers, LoL guild, IOTR, DARK etc. Still Da Mom, Leah, Tazogre, Siabhra, Drachen Slayer, Jupiter the lumberjack, Afkaserious, Le Glad Toucher ( :P ) and all the awesome players who made the game, many names left unmentioned but not forgotten!
    Rock trolls at Josody, Ettins at Lotors, Hell Island, Guilds quest, Chlera, Werewolf island, and all the other locations remembered
    Yes, for anyone who rememebers me, I am Mark Baranov the cartographer who made maps back in the day, Instigator dungeon, Lich dungeon, Shroom cave, Storm giant cave, Termigon cave etc. I will rememeber you all!!!

      I was IMBACK, Nemous, Xaol. I remember LK, Ekschaxze, Stryker, Ophelia, Cordelia..I was in AoS Alliance of Souls.
      So much insane drama and politics in this game. Everything he said was spot on about the community and the harshness of death. I played before there even was a jail function.
      I was one of the very first players to go to the winter wonderland when they added it to the game. So many memories with my guilds and friends. Coming to rescue guild members getting attacked, fighting over hunting areas. Losing powerful weapons to other PK(player killer, the term at the time) guilds. Also many, many times cleverly setting up traps and ambushes for rival guilds.
      Why does it seem like old school dransik had something that so many similar games today just lack? I often thought of this game throughout the years.

    Dude. I didnt know there was just as much love out there for this game as i once had and listening to this video just brought on some serious nastalgia. Ive talked to a lot of gamer friends about it over the years, and nobody ever seems to know it.
    I was late to Dransik. I think i joined probably within a year of Ashen Empires. Although it seems my memory isnt serving me well here because i thought i vaguely remembered playing Dransik, still called Dransik with the isometric graphics. Man the feeling of running into a good town and killing someone and then fighting the guards and victory was actually possible. Everyone hanging out in the banks. Changing residence to live in the evil town in hell. And then much later, an update that would let you see your armor! I guess the rebrand was in there to Ashen Empires but for some reason i remember this all an Dransik, and Ashen Empires being the game when i came back a few years later to see if it still existed.
    Either way - this was one of those games that was really special IMO and i really wish the tone of MMOs had been more set by this style of game over WoW.

    The ultimate freedom is what the current-day MMOs are lacking, as well as actions having proper consequences. Everything felt much more meaningful due to that. It was also lovely that the GMs would partake in the game - I remember seeing Talazar going around a few times, even RPing with MoT. I miss all of that..

    This game was a massive part of my early childhood pc gaming experience. I remember the Armageddon event -- holding up in a house with my friends, stationing two at the door and one at each window. We waited and killed anyone who tried to come in, then split the loot. We were fortunate to last nearly to the end of the event purely on strategy alone -- we had little gear when it began.
    Then, fast forward to the implementation of the 3D isometric rebuild where I treated the game as a business and ran a successful farming business -- hiring friends to protect my crops as I efficiently harvested so many of my crops and made us rich! And lastly came the implementation of magic into the game (the wand system). This is where I got banned. I figured out what rune combination was the lightning bolt that would 1-shot players (and GMs). I camped the graveyard at the most southern town and used the spell to execute so many players over and over again... and then when a GM ordered me to stop I tested if the spell had the same effect on them as well. It did.
    I'm not really sorry for killing the GM (that was curiosity), but I am sorry to the players who I camped in the graveyards. If you're out there... my apologies. :)

    Very nice video. Probably the best well put together, if not the only one we'll have of Dransik for people to refer to as the times go on. While I still think there is quite a lot of enjoyment to get from the game, it's not for the people whom originally played it any longer as the current generation whom has stuck around since the original release is now mostly pvp-oriented and well into their 30s.

    • @TheSuperRetroBros
      @TheSuperRetroBros  5 років тому

      Thanks for the kind words. I love Dransik to death and saw that there is no coverage of it. Even though my channel is obscure and small, I figured that someone might find this down the line and enjoy the reminiscing.
      Times have changed, and I agree with your sentiments. I do think that Steam could potentially give some much needed spirit to any Dransik/Elderlands game. But... I don't know how interested the developers are in Valve.

    • @MysticAuron
      @MysticAuron 5 років тому

      @@TheSuperRetroBros The best thing someone could do is make a dransik-type game that is mobile friendly, and have it distributed throughout all PC platforms on top of it. You can submit any game as a developer to Steam for a $100 fee and be approved for the store pretty easily - just someone needs to actually make the game.
      Unfortunately, that has yet to be successfully recreated in any form close to the game that we love with the brutal pvp, and not end up taking restrictions in order to prevent the unrestricted PKing Dransik had that you mention in the video. This complication has been the community's fight between each other as the current generation of players whom have stuck around want a bloodbath of excitement & craptalk between groups and players, while the nostalgic older players don't want this because it isn't the RP reason given PVP, and friendly massive community they remember. All things evolve with time and unfortunately for them it ended up being the first and neither side is ever happy with the results between the two.
      There is clones such as Vorlia which replicate the hardcore PVP, which is being ran on/off to this day, and that is the closest recreation we've ever gotten. However, it suffers the 2000s polish as Dransik does these days with not being accessible to modern expected settings such as simple 1920x1080 resolutions, as it was originally made in 2003/4. A damn shame, really.
      Would you mind if I dropped a link to some current Dransik-like projects, and even a reverse engineered project of Dransik ISO (AE) for people to check out?

    • @TheSuperRetroBros
      @TheSuperRetroBros  5 років тому

      @@MysticAuron Haha it sounds like I had a lot more I should've expanded on. I do recall a lot of the arguments between what limitations should be included in Dransik and all subsequent projects. It's crazy to think that as much as the PvP system was beautiful, it was self-defeating. Once numbers shrink, there's really no going back. People who quit, most likely quit because of PKing/Looting. And newbies aren't going to be able to keep up with whatever high level characters exist.
      I'm totally stumped on how you could remedy this? I'm sure there have been ENDLESS arguments....
      But yeah, I'd imagine your proposition with steam would fix it. I think Lothgar is considering putting both Elderlands and LO on steam, or has... but I don't know if he is going to follow through with it.

    • @MysticAuron
      @MysticAuron 5 років тому

      @@TheSuperRetroBros Yup. I've been part of those arguments for each side to a degree for many years, while I tend to lean on the PVP side as my biggest attraction was the adrenaline rush, and shakes of anxiety of battle IRL I get playing the game's PVP. i miss fighting with F3AR for hours because a group of them PKed a friend right after he got his 1st HoS.
    i remember when the SoP was the best staff by far.
    finally traded for the last piece of holy armor i needed for my set, then getting a black plate chest drop the next day and spending hours PKing to be able to use it, only to have it stolen by F3AR.....
    ahhh memories

    Back in those days, Developers actually cared.

    Oh gosh I miss those times! Remember the time I started this back at around -99 and played as long as I can remember till there was few "rebirths on community". I remember those huge guild wars, FU, RS ... Those were golden times on mmorpgs which actually was pvp based. Im still waiting Elderlands to pop up again or Dransik gettings its 5th rebirth? ^^ Oh and not to mention the thing I loved the most was the game musics! I still got the login theme as my ring tone and death as my message tone^^

    Just something I recently found out that I thought was interesting about MMOs:
    A lot of people think WoW has "lost its way" over the years, but if you read the early dev diaries and articles, it becomes clear that the goal was always to make MMOs more mainstream. And from the numbers, I think they were very successful with this goal.
    Just the fact that you didn't really lose anything except time and a bit of gold when you died was pretty new to RPGs, and it only really became punishing near the end-game if you died a LOT while wearing expensive gear, so mostly in raids.
    A lot of other things were easier in WoW as well, the skill system was much more streamlined, crafting was easier, combat used abilities which meant it was a lot more interesting than in competing games.
    And while I love WoW, I am kind of sad that I missed out on all those cool mechanics from back in the day like actually looting player corpses, complex PvP mechanics, etc.
    I know there are a lot of games out today that have similar mechanics, some are even MMOs. But now that I have a fulltime job I don't think I have the energy and time to really delve deep into such a game again.

    • @TheSuperRetroBros
      @TheSuperRetroBros  5 років тому +1

      Same I definitely don't think I could play a game like Dransik again. Losing my gear to gankers and aggressive players would probably be too much. But you're definitely right. WoW had a plan, and it worked. I still love classic WoW and some expansions but it's a whole different game experience then some of these old MMOs.

    • @hazyhalfmoon

      @@TheSuperRetroBros The thing about losing your gear was that it made your gear more valuable and you had to weigh the risks of heading in to the wild with your best equipment. It would often be better to travel with lower end gear you were willing to lose, and this also balanced the difficulty of mobs and lower level player killers.
      Also the fact that you could lose your gear in the back of a dungeon and it would disappear helped with the player economy where rare loot remained rare through attrition.

    The open alpha/beta started in 2000 as far as I'm aware. And saying it was inspired by Ultima Online isn't quite correct. The developer worked on the Ultima games. When the design for Ultima Online was decided upon, he disagreed with the decisions that were made. He began working on this game using the designs he preferred in response.

    Wow Dransik looks A LOT like Ultima 5 (my favorite of the series).
    And it was the first time I head of it today. Personally I played UO from 1998-2001, then NwN (online servers) until 2004, then FFXI until 2008 (with some returns here and there) and WoW until Cataclysm where they kinda destroyed their game IMHO.

    I really hate the presentation of this video, but I have a ton of nostalgia regarding this era of video games.
    I did not play WOW!
    No beef with it, but I did not have the money to play
    And when Dransk/Ashen Empires became p2p I gave up after a few months
    After one of my best elementary school friends ripped me off, promising to trade me something valuable in exchange for another item.
    They ripped me off - a 12 year old kid I had known my entire life.
    They ripped me off for an inconsequential item they couldn't even use.
    I don't think the idea that you're interacting with humans in MMOs held as much weight when this game was in vogue.
    What a wild west era in gaming.
    There's nothing stopping the capitalism of the game.
    You could be evil, have a red name, but there wasn't any bad effects being evil; lawful guards would attack you, but you have the best items in the game... You could just live in "evil' cities and exist as a villain.
    The biggest problem I think some people had was they the villain only has things to gain.
    I think the absolute best thing is that we all played on the same server.
