- 12/06/2008. Georgia Dome (Atlanta, GA). The 17th annual SEC Championship Game. The #1 Alabama Crimson Tide (12-0) vs. the #2 Florida Gators (11-1).
Broadcast on CBS.
I was at this game. So hype when Haden got that pick to seal it! This was the rise of Bama though. After this year their confidence, recruiting, and execution went to another level.
This one of the few times alabama has been pretty much beat by talent, despite javie's big kickoff screw up. Florida was the better team that year.
Also remember Florida was missing one of their best players, Percy Harvin.
I mean if it wasn't for arenas costing us 35 yards, Nick running a stupid fake fg with tiffin on the bench, or hightower getting a hold of the facemask we probably win the game....that's how close the margin is between victory and defeat...tiny little errors like that can make or break the game for ya. With that being said, Florida did have more talent that year and this is one of the only bama losses I kind of enjoy watching...

I mean yeah they were the better team, but yeah if you take away the kickoff gaffe, the terrible fake fg decision and the hightower facemask we could have been in the title game year 2. Nevertheless, I have no complaint with how everything ultimately turned out. :)
What an important game for the Saban Era. The best loss anyone could ever imagine. This Florida team was unbelievable and deserving of the championship.

I was disappointed but not mad with the loss. Florida was the better team. It was only year 2 of the Saban era. Plus, it made them laser focused and hungry for revenge in 2009.
Side note: It's so creepy seeing Aaron Hernandez on these highlights knowing what we do now.
This was the first National Championship play in game in many peoples eyes. Tebows promise, Texas losing to Tech in the final seconds, experts still learning who Bama was. Fantastic year. This lose was probably the best thing to ever happen to Bama. They came back the next year and took out Tebow and started a dynasty that is only challenged by Ohio State, Clemson and Auburn. But this year, after Ole Miss stunned Florida there was no stopping Tebow. Man among boys this year. Also, how Oklahoma was over Texas is still beyond me since Texas beat them.
My take away from this and many SEC Championships since is we should do away with these games or schedule them post National Championship. The SEC screws itself every year with this game - most years two of the top 5 teams in college football play this game one is eliminated from the big game because the SEC is so stacked with talent.
I mean, the SEC Championship is basically a play-in game to the playoffs nowadays. Every SEC Champion since 2006 has made the BCS Title Game/CFP Playoff. So if you want to be in you gotta prove it in the SECCG. Teams like 2018 UGA may have been one of the “four best teams,” but they had their shot in the SECCG to beat Bama and earn their way into the playoffs.
Florida was amazing.. Tim Tebow was a god in college football.. I rembmer how good Percy Harvin was to.. this was pretty much the glory days of Florida football.. 2008 team is by far Florida's best team.. there was so much more talent in football back in the early 2000's and 90's..

I remember going to see Alabama games during the dark ages when you could find Alabama tickets laying on the sidewalk. Then they won some games and priced out the little people who stuck with them when things weren't that good out of the game.
If Tyrone prothro wouldn't went down it's a good chance we would have won the SEC and probably national he was just that great of a player he made everyone better around him he was the equivalent of having a Reggie Bush and with that they would have went undefeated but if that would have we would not have gotten Nick Saban but I really did hate it for him he never was the same after that
notice how when saban lost he still stuck around and talked with Meyer for quite a while, fast forward to a year Saban wins and there is literally no conversation. Just gives you an idea of the difference there is in class between these two.

Dumbest post I've ever seen...2011 Alabama defense would have shut them down. The 2009 team would have rolled them...This year's team would own them. The 2011 Alabama team played a MUCH tougher schedule. Hell, looking at them, ; 4 current Alabama title teams played tougher schedules...
