This scene is so eerie. Makes me wonder how many young men across America gathered at the local bars, VFW halls, and other places, playing games, singing, patting each other on the back, joyful with not a care in the world, not knowing what horrors awaited them far from home. A joyful, yet sad, moment, repeated endless times by so many boys.
This and wedding needed to.happen. I remember thinking why the hell the wedding was almost an hour of the film..by the end i wouldn't have had it any other way
I can't stop watching Christopher Walken's little dance, and when the chorus of the song sings, it came out so perfect that I even wanted to dance like he did.
I always wondered what happened to him De Niro, Goodfellas, Once Upon a time in America, Capone in the untouchables, Taxi Driver, young Vito Corleone. Fast forward present day meet the Parents and bad grandpa. He even scared the hell out of me in Cape Fear.
Every dude relates to this scene. That group of 3, 4, 5 or as in here, maybe 6 guys who are tight that you got together with for drinks, laughs, pick up games, cottage weekends and so on. From the late teens to mid 20s you shared it all and you can't remember how you were able to afford it. You argued from time to time and someone was always the asshead (guy who started fights when out, etc) but you had incredible times together and have the nicknames or scares to back it up. You still see each other from time to time but its just a tad different. (jobs, family, kids, new location - the responsibilities of life) But that bond that you shared together is deep and its something you truly wish you had again. True Friends. Our similar tune and moment like this. It's early 90's and the four of us leaving a club around 2am feeling no pain, into the one car our friend has and we're hungry so we drive to the one part of town where you know you can get a good bite to eat rather cheap. The radio is on (couldn't afford cassette or CD in in the car) and on comes Jet by Paul McCartney and the Wings. Four voices singing the harmony to this day never sounded or stayed with me better. That's what this scene means to me.
This is one of the best youtube comments I've ever read. This is so true, and if you're a guy of ANY age you know what he's talking about. Those type of friends are like brothers. Thanks man
The entire beginning of the movie paralleled my own life . Smoke stack town . The town I grew up in was polish but a lot like this Russian Orthodox church and wedding. we even had our wedding reception in a American Legion Hall . The old ladies acting the same . Deer hunting with my friends. And my wife said to me, that bar scene with them singing was just exactly like you and your boys . We probably had about 25 guys go to Vietnam from my area in those years and believe it or not we did not lose one guy. They all came home but some had thier share of problems .
I was a teenager in the UK when the Vietnam War was on, and I thought then what a waste of life for these young men, and the lack of support when they survived and got back home. I saw this film when it came out in the late 70s, and the war has not been that long ago. I was so upset, knowing what these guys went through. My father was in the RAF during WW2, and he thought that war was to end all wars. My father was terminally ill at the time of Vietnam, and even though he was here in the UK, I could see my dad`s eyes welling up for these young men.
Growing up in a steel town this scene hits home…..especially in the ‘60’s. Steel workers getting off the graveyard shift and right to the bar. All the corner establishments were open back then. Would even cash their paychecks. Different times!
every time i watch this classic masterpiece i ball my eyes out like a baby because it hits all the feels deniro is majestic, walken is a phenom and streep is unreal @ such a young age she makes me cry in every scene. maybe the greatest cast ever in film history.
Celtic Whisper Same here, too scared to watch it again. I was 12 or 13 when I first saw it. It’s been over 30 years since I’ve seen it yet it’s in my top 5 of my favorite movies!
We watched this when I was in high school English class as a senior. We had to analyze it piece by piece as part of a class . The movie is an absolutely amazing portrayal of the war and what our boys went through that no one ever knew about .
Last weekend I was driving from Ohio to NJ and this song came on while I cruised across I80. I relived this whole scene from the Deer Hunter as I shrieked along with the song. Epic movie with an Epic song.
this scene just tells you so much about these characters without having to spell it out. you get the sense that these guys turn up at this bar every day or every weekend. they probably earn very little working in steel, but still choose to place bets over their pool games, as they are just hometown guys, who love where they are and feel no need to be tight.
What a scene! What a film! and so good to see the younger Robert De Niro, John Cazale, Christopher Walken. A brutal story unfolded soon after this which should never be forgotten.
when I came to the States this was second movie I saw. I really liked this performance of this song much better than others !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Soviet Jesus
This is such an awesome guy movie moment. Only a dude with close homeboys could really relate to this. I remember watching this as a kid and I was blown away by the acting through out the movie. Watching this again made me feel good inside.

What a film! Excellent cast. I love this song and I love this scene, I think’s it my favorite. I’m a big fan of Robert De Niro and have been watching and enjoying his films. I plan to watch them all. Deer Hunter is among the top favorites so far.

But hell - DeNiro was outrageously sexy in this film. And in plenty more. Great performances by both!
I went on a weekend 'Beer bender' almost 10 years ago. Watched a few movies starring Christopher Walken, and the ''Deer Hunter'' popped up. After this scene i went to the shops and purchased 24 bottles of Rolling Rock, and went back home to finish watching the film. Great days. Now i am married; and miserable !

John Cazale, every movie he was in was nominated for Best Picture. That’s special.
May God have mercy on him
He was a great actor 🙏🙏
He was dying during filming, so they filmed all of his scenes first.

Paul w, Don't be a dick!
@Hammerschlägen M Yah the damn politicians last that damn war.
Life unpredictable, I don't think the Romans thought they be fighting in wars involuntarily
You pretty much summed up the whole movie
I reveimmended this movie to someone he didn’t like it
I have him the same thing
Think about all those Pals Battalions in WW1. Whole towns in England lost almost all their young men in one day.
John Cazale... What an actor he was!
Already sick when this movie was shot, he worked until the end.
Rest In Peace, Maestro.
Wonderful actor and the love of Meryl Streep who starred alongside him in this film.
This scene is so beautiful...I am polish and in my opinion Deer Hunter is the best movie about Vietnam War
This scene is amazing. The movie really would not be the same w/o it.
Yep really makes the 2nd half more meaningful. Showing everyone in a simpler, happier time enjoying each other's company before things got crazy.
Brodie McGrath it's wonderful
My favorite scene in this movie.
One of the greatest scenes in history...check out the one when they leave the factory with a race against the tractor.

I can't stop watching Christopher Walken's little dance, and when the chorus of the song sings, it came out so perfect that I even wanted to dance like he did.
He was a professional dancer before acting, and could sing too.
Deer Hunter & Taxi Driver my all time favorites they're both untouchable in my opinion.
Yup I saw both in 2009 thanks to my high school film class and I really wish I could go back and see them for the first time
@@dustytransitor866 It warms my heart to know someone could be moved by these films so many years after their release. :)

You nailed it- these two are indeed the most well-acted motion pictures to date.
In my opinions, The Deer Hunter have some continous flaws, but except that it's almost perfect
