I think out of all disabilities, autism is stigmatised the most. Other disabilities such as ADHD, dyslexia are seen as “cool” or “trendy”, whereas autism is seen as weird.
I'm 28, also struggling a lot with unemployment. I love video editing and production, and want to work with that, but recently I'm considering just getting a "normal" job I know I would not like, just to not be unemployed. But I know that would be horrible too.
Everything you have said in this video, I have been through. I am 25, autistic and have been unemployed for about a year and a half. Been attending interviews, completing tasks, the whole lot. All unsuccessful. Rejection after rejection. I have been helping out with admin in my parent’s business in the time being, being paid from that. I really don’t think there’s a place for me in the corporate world, and I think I’ll just have to work with my parents.
Hey thanks for you comment Crystal, sorry I have only just seen that you have commented, this is quite new for me so I'll be keeping a look out for more comments in the future. So firstly don't give up hope and remember there are loads of different options and paths you can take in life. We are all told to follow certain paths and go for certain jobs and yet there are so many ways we can achieve independence. Firstly you are you still quite young and never give up, especially if you have certain skills and interests that you enjoy and you're very knowledgable and skilled in. I'm sure you do really well for your parents business and never put to much pressure on yourself to be amazingly successful, it can be so painful but try to feel like you have other reasons and purposes in life other than following what society expects. I hope you can keep in contact to let me know how you get on in life and also ill try to produce video content with you mind, what's important is to know your not alone, 80 percent of autistic adults from the latest government figures are unemployed so that's thousands. Stay strong ok and know you're just as good as everyone else. We need the weird and wonderful :)
@@Justbeingmyself-zy8ui Thank you for your reply. I am trying to not be so hard on myself. I am still quite young as you said, and the system does not cater for people like myself and yourself, so I can only do my best, and at least I can say I tried. I did go to university and graduated with a degree in Maths with Economics, but just was not what I expected. Anyway, that’s another story for another day :) Your videos have been really informative and helpful. I feel heard and seen by your experiences you have shared so far, keep it up!
Getting a job just sounds shit. Might as well squeeze the system, volunteer, join a club and just do what I want to do. Fuck a system that looks down on us because we don’t act a certain way. I’ve been to uni, was never happy in education, tried getting jobs and failed. The way this country is I don’t think there’s much point.

My son is on the spectrum and he's really struggling with unemployment. It breaks my heart to see how hard he tries but he keeps getting fired.
