The greatest understatement in history -- Eddie saying "That's a good job there." at the end. The crowd's brief pause, and thunderous applause just says it all. The absolute most emotive version of this song ever recorded. It just rips the tears out of you.
That is one of the best, if not the best, bluegrass vocals of all time. You can hear the anguish in Dudley's voice and see it in his face. He is feeling what he is singing and that's what makes this such a great performance. It gives me goose bumps when I listen.
My all time favorite bluegrass song, the words, the music, the singing, it does not get any better (and probably never will) Thank you sooooo much, and God Bless. Chuck, a Yankee hill billy and proud of it
In one of the comments someone mentioned the brief pause at the end of song followed by thunderous applause. In an interview with a well known classical conductor recently, he mentioned what a great compliment it is when that happens; to the music and the performance. Well deserved here.
For those who miss Dudley's singing with the Johnson Mtn Boys, don't forget he is now a member of the Seldom Scene, a great group in their own right...
@RTO70, thanks for the info. Since I didn't know about these guys before, I won't bemoan the fact that they aren't performing anymore. Thank goodness for UA-cam though. Such a rich resource . . . Like your Vietnam piece at your site too.
Mines are scary and dangerous. I once went as a tourist on an ore care down into the Bisbee Arizona mine and couldn't wait to get back out again. It's too bad that humans have to do work like that. Dirty, unhealthy, and dangerous. Takes a tough breed of man to do that work
@dogloverlcp not in a very long time...don't know the exact date, (early 90s perhaps?)...but the big money didn't come as fast as expected, so it ended. This is a KILLER version of this song by the way..kudos for someone posting this one
This is not just the pinnacle of bluegrass this was the pinnacle of all music.
35 years later this one still gets me. one of the best singers of the plum pitiful songbook
Heart an soul for sure What a singer

watching this then watching the CMA's really puts things in perspective.... what happened to real music?
These boys were great bluegrass musicians. I totally agree with johnpd4419.
This is amazing.
As Eddie himself would say on his radio show-"Are there any questions?..there better not be, if so, give me a call & we'll talk about it."
Who was the Eddie you mentioned? Just wondering.

@eneze5 Totally agree....if this doesn't get to you then you have no soul
He was miles ahead of Whitley.
I love this sound. Thanks for posting this. 1988 is a long time ago. Are these guys still performing?
