    I really appreciate this. My dryer isn’t exactly this model but all the essentials are the same. There is no way with only the conversion instructions that I would’ve figured this out without a LOT more time. Thank you!

    Great video. One thing I would do is change that dryer vent. Those accordion style collect lint on the inside and is the one of the top reasons for house fires. Go with the flexible vent with the smooth wall inside.

    Thank You from a fellow LDS., This is great! I am planning on going "Off Grid' but not in a land locked house. I bought an older 65' Concorde Motor Yacht that we are converting to Electric Propulsion, using Chevy Volt Batteries 360 (Vdc) and Tesla Motors from salvage yards. We will be using Solar, and wind generation, coupled with standby 15kw propane generator, so this will come in handy. we are taking out the HUGE Detroit Diesels and using that space as a hydroponic garden area and some place to store Jet Ski's.

Food for thought - You might want to consider sealing the gas line penetration coming through the floor to prevent unconditioned air or unwanted critters from entering the utility room. I'm not sure if that's a basement I see in your homes profile picture so it may not be as big an issue if there is a basement.

    From my perspective, the perspective of a long time propane user: If I am off grid with free electric it doesn't make sense for me to run anything on propane as a primary fuel source. Why would I pay for something when I have it free?? Propane is like buying gas at the pump; one price today, and tomorrow it is quadruple what I paid today. After last years propane prices (gouging) at over $4.00 a gallon I would never convert anything to propane. In fact, that propane gouging is what made me seriously contemplate solar. At those prices I would be "prepared" to buy all new, electric, appliances. Additionally, if I was a serious "prepper", meaning I am convinced the end is near, then how will I run my appliances when society collapses? The availability of propane will less than the availability of gasoline. With solar I will have the ability to continue using my appliances, even if I have to ration how often I use them, I will be prepared ;)

    Hello David -- we are preparing to go off grid and your videos have been SO SO helpful! Thank you! I have a question:
    We also want to use propane appliances except the refrigerator. Do you have a solid source for where to buy propane appliances? We will be located in Western CO when it's all said and done.
    I have done a brief search, but propane is new to us. Like you, we've been on grid most of our lives -- so many of these things are new to us. Thankfully, hubby is an engineer (and loves your details, btw)....but I want to find the kind of appliances I know will make our home comfortable. I would love to know any sources you may have for them!
    Thanks again -- we are grateful for your information. You make us feel like it is possible to do what you guys are doing. (And we are close to your age judging by your wedding photo -- probably a few years old -- and we are just starting!)

    How does converting a propane appliance to natural gas ..
    Save electricity? It uses the same amount of electricity in either case.
    Lower utility costs? I'm pretty sure propane is more expensive than natural gas, but I could be wrong.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  9 років тому

      Richard Amirault By not using an electric clothes dryer we save a huge amount on electricity. I converted the natural gas dryer to propane because I can store my own propane and have it on hand when/if natural gas isn't available.

      That is a great question. I don't like the smell of propane either. And if I smelled any that would mean there is a leak. There is no propane gas smell from any of our appliances including the dryer and furnace. I would not have any concerns about bad gas smells in the house.

    One more thought -- If I have a propane generator to charge my batteries as a secondary source of energy, why would I put anything on propane as a primary fuel source? I'm going on the assumption that I will often be able to run my appliances with free solar energy. I'm really having some issues with how using propane as primary fuel source for anything will ever do anything but cost me more money. I own my 1,000 gallon propane tank so it will always be here, but I sure as heck don't want to pay to fill it. Filling my tank requires a loan from the bank these days -- okay, so it's not that bad, but it is VERY expensive to fill my propane tank, and I fill it in summer when prices are low. The prices double in winter -- they always have -- at least for the past 25 years they have. Propane is our only source of gas out here in the middle of nowhere.

    • @LDSPrepper
      @LDSPrepper  9 років тому

      tbeck3579 Thank you for sharing your perspective. Being of the belief that one is none and two is one we have multiple sources for most everything, including power. As an example we have four different ways to heat our house, solar (electricity with wall heaters in every room), propane furnace, wood burning stove and kerosene heater. As we replace our electric appliances with propane we are keeping the old appliances as a backup. Propane for me is very inexpensive. $1.499/gallon. That equates to $0.05/kilowatt hour. That is about 1/3 of the $0.14/kwh that my power company currently charges. If I were to rely solely on solar and use my propane generator to charge the battery bank when sun doesn't then I would need to have propane on hand. But the main reason we use propane appliances is because we would had to have build a solar power system 3-4x larger and 3-4x more expensive than the one we have. That would have cost me $90,000 to $120,000. I am very happy with the redudant supply of power and the balance of energy use.
