Many of us singers tend to take the super critical angle when looking at our own voices. We want to 'improve our tone' or sing with more accurate pitch. Maybe we want to increase our range sing with more intensity or emotional connectedness.
When unpacking a singer like U2's Bono, many of our aspirations as singers can be put into a very different perspective! Listening to the way Bono lands on notes or the feathering he does with his to longer phrases can expose some major opportunities for our own voice.
With Bono, accuracy, tone and precision take back seat to unique phrasing and charisma ...And the listening experience is far better because of his approach! By dissecting his voice, we can learn some great ways to GO FOR IT with our own voices.
At the same time, we'll find that some of the big goals we have for our own voices are actually accomplished when we take the roundabout approach to energy and engagement that Bono has perfected over the years! - Розваги
Bono is so underrated as a vocalist. I’m from Dublin, I can tell you we really don’t appreciate his talent. One of my favourite performances of his is not with U2, it’s with Clannad on a song called “in a lifetime”. Go listen, amazing
Whats wrong with irish people
Between 1984 to around 1990, Bono's voice was absolutely phenomenal. It's changed over the years and it still has a unique and beautiful quality to it.. of course, he delivers his performance from the heart which is the magic ingredient.
Yes all emotion.
I’d say I was the same still through about 93-95 maybe a little hire pitch but he still sounded the exact same live
I think the best period started and finished earlier. The purity and range of the voice on 1981’s “October” is no longer present even by 1987’s “Joshua Tree”
Bono didn't fully develop as a singer until the early 90's and his stage performances during that period is simply unmatched by anyone. He could have never pulled off a song like Lemon in 1985. His early years...first 3 albums he's even mentioned he sounded like a girl.
@@G_Ellis606 I’m sorry, but that is absurd. Lemon is just falsetto, that’s all. There’s nothing especially tricky about it, especially for a singer who had been successfully employing falsetto from time to time both on record and in performance for more than a decade by then. The singer on War, October and the Unforgettable Fire sang lines that were at least as challenging as anything in “Lemon”, and was more than capable of singing it if it had been available for him to to sing then.
U2 is my favorite band, Bono is my favorite singer. 90s U2 is my favorite U2, my opinion also Bono's best vocals. This was a great video. Thank you.
Awesome!
I'm a 33 year fan of U2 and of course Bono's voice, lyrics and persona
The man has magic in his voice, after meeting him I can say it's in his heart, he is honestly a lovely person!
I'm glad I stumbled in!
Thank you!
That’s so cool!
Bono honestly is just a beautiful man inside and out. I love him so much. He seems like he'd be very fun to talk to.
@@maddisonjohnson4308 Bono is a very cool dude to shoot the breeze with and very witty!
On top of being extremely intelligent and philosophical
I just adore him! And he smells so good and has the softest hands
And those baby blue 👀 😁❤
@@annaconway7009 He's just precious all around. I want to meet him some day and just say thank you for inspiring me to do music and get over stage fright and for getting me through the roughest parts of my life.
@@maddisonjohnson4308 how did u get over stage fright that’s always something I’ve always wanted to ask bono how are u not nervous when you go on stage I always am and I don’t know how to get rid of it 😂
Even though I've never been a huge U2 fan, I've always considered Bono a great singer. To see how you've deconstructed his voice and learn all the minor details he adds into his singing, is greatly helpful. Thank you professor for another great lesson.
Thanks for sharing this!
I freaking love Bono’s voice, this video is gold!
So many of your vocal breakdowns are for artists I never used to like, but your analysis of their techniques always gets me interested in checking them out and I learn to appreciate them so much more. Thank you for widening my tastes and opening my mind, Chris!
That’s so cool!
"A concerned, mildly sedated, yet confident witch." Hahaha
I also consider Bono one of my favourite singers, but I probably never have listened U2 songs with this kind of attention about the way he use his amazing voice. Now I have more awareness about the reasons he sounds so intense and emotional. Thank you Chris for your analysis
This channel is a tremendous resource! Thank you for what you do!!! Bono is why I wanted sing since I was a child - the journey never ends!
I just learned how to sing like him by listening to U2 for my whole life I’ll make a UA-cam channel singing U2 covers
Always loved the expressiveness Bono achieved in his singing. Great video picking apart his style.
Yes! Thank you.
Wow Chris! Possibly one of the best, most in-depth thoughtful singing analyses on the web. Thanks for going to so much depth. So clear how inspirational you find Bono's singing.
One of your previous videos (forget if YT or "Discover..." course) inspired me to experiment with "The Unforgettable Fire" in my own vocal explorations. I've always loved the "drama" of what Bono does with his voice. So rich and expressive, very similar to Freddie Mercury. Another great analysis to add to my favorite singer collection!
Awesome! I agree... DRAMA is a GREAT word for what he does!!
Amazing! Now I’m gonna send this to anyone who ever says Bono can’t sing :) thank you so much for this!
You're welcome!
I'm sososososo sorry but who tf says he can't sing?!?!
The song Lemon by U2 from the Zooropa album, Bono sings with a falsetto pitch for most of the entire song, demonstrating his high range of vocal pitch. Wonder what techniques he uses for his falsetto singing.
Plus he had the balls to sing it live.
Yes live Lemon on ZooTV is something else he blends that great falsetto into his rich deep vocal for a very intersting and attractive sound. Lemon is a great piece of performance art.
James Dean Bradfield from The Manic Street Preachers would be a great choice for analysis in my opinion. He has a very powerful and interesting voice.
"Me and Stephen Hawking" would be a particularly good song to look at, I think. He seems to be singing higher than you'd think he is, whereas I find with other singers it's usually the other way around.
Good call... "Faster" & " Motor Cycle Empitiness" would be a few to look at. His voice is epic
Totally agree!
Thanks man. I've been waiting for this. Huge influence on myself. Bono has so much soul & expression.
Oh my god, i wanted that video for so long !! thank you chris :D
excellent breakdown and lesson! I must say that the way I always responded to Bono's singing now makes sense at a deeper level, and from a developing singer's perspective: He really was such a master at this unique vocal expressiveness...easily flowing from a gut-wrenching plea to soft-and-sexy purr. You really get the sense that he is singing to his own soul, and privately to his "love". You have given us a really valuable lesson on using airflow while singing; when used so sensitively like Bono does in this song...it's brilliant, evocative and wonderfully expressive! :-)
Thanks so much!
I really like what you said about 'singing to the soul and our own love' we should all do this when we sing and be like Bono in our passion for the song's message.
Yes! Great analysis. The perfectly imperfect nature of his performances really comes out when you listen to his isolated vocal tracks. He has that Buckley vulnerability counterbalanced with a healthy dose of frontman swagger. Big influence and inspiration. End of Achtung? Acrobat into Blindness? Epic!
It’s insane how fast your youtube channel grew, but highly understandable. Great video once again Chris!
Fantastic analysis. I really enjoyed how you broke things down and really paid attention to the important details. The stuff that 99% of cover singers ignore is EXACTLY what makes Bono's version so much better. You are such a talented singer and have such control over your voice. The only thing I could say about your version of singing vs Bono's is that Bono's seems "natural", "effortless" but what I would notice if you were to sing the whole song through it would be, "man, this guy is really working hard". But some of that could be from the processing that Bono's vocals went through.
I also have to add Brandon Flowers. A very unique voice IMO
Awesome job Chris. Some more great tricks to put in my singing vocabulary. Loved it!
This is fascinating as blending my own upper and lower voices have always been a challenge.( music theater/ classical style). He interchanges without hesitation.
He seems to have really good breath support, and amazing colors and emotion...hes all emotion, but wondering if this wild and crazy vocal technique is what contributed to his on again off again vocals since the early 90s. Maybe the smoking was mostly the issue there.
Phenomenal work, Chris. Thank you!
Bono’s best yodel is on the phrase “Memphis sky” in the 1984 song “Pride (In the Name of Love)”. I’ve never heard him pull it off live (where he always tries to hit the high note in chest voice for some reason), but on the record it’s a perfectly executed gear-change from chest to falsetto.
Here he pulls it off (the falsetto part on Pride) in 1992 (Zoo TV) around the 2 min, 18 second mark:

Thank you for this video Chris!
Amazing stuff. Thank you Chris.
F'n great, as usual, Chris! You are tremendous at analysis ❤
Absolutely great video man, very very informative.
Awesome video, man. Bono is the person that inspired me to sing and become an artist. I've been waiting for a video like this for many years! Cheers.
Awesome!!
Me too
Love Bono’s vocals
I'm going to request Neil Fallon of Clutch again. His voice is so unique, needs more attention and I'd also like to understand it better.
Thank you! :)
He's been my dude since Speedway. Put on your pirate voice, sing "Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum" and you're off to a good start. 😎 Having your Dungeons and Dragons Monster Manual for bonus points reference material.
👍 I love Bono, U2. I learned how the air flow impacts singing. Thank you 🙏
Awesome Video! I’ve been binge listening U2 for the past days! Thanks!
Great! Here's another you might appreciate: ua-cam.com/video/fJ5GIkioADY/v-deo.html
@@chrisliepe Thanks!
Pride(In the name of love) and I still haven't found what I'm looking for.
Was the songs that made me really marvel at his voice
Great lesson Chris
Hi Chris, I don't often comment on UA-cam but I'd like to thank you for all your awesome videos. You're by far the best singing teaching channel here. Though I'm not a singer, I've learned a lot just by watching your videos. Also, I'd love to see a video deconstruction on Josh Homme singing style. One of my favourites singers, very underrated. Greetings from France ! 🤘
Thanks so much!!
I'd love to see a video on Mikael Åkerfeldt from Opeth, I'm always stunned by the variety of his singing and I'd like to understand his technique better
Yes, please that would great
Although Chris has said that lower screams are hard for him, this could also be an opportunity for him to learn something new
A concerned and insightful witch... - I'll get you my pretty 🤣🤣🤣 - I love your analysis! I'm a female singer and Bono is my greatest influence. I love the resonance in his voice, his passionate approach, and just letting music take over his body. His dramatic delivery and emotional depth when singing is so powerful and vulnerable at the same time. 💝👍✨️✨️✨️
Love what ur doing with these breakdowns... would LOVE if u covered Sting 🐝
Very good! I understand!
I must say that when I clicked on this video, I was not expecting to hear Bono compared to a sedated witch. Lol! Great video. Although one thing I was hoping for- it makes sense that you would cover some of their most popular songs such as the ones off the Joshua Tree however one thing that seems to be ignored by a lot of people is his 2000-2010s work. It would be interesting to hear an analysis of his singing on the more recent albums! I still liked the video though, good job! :)
Thanks for the video! Bono has an amazing voice. So difficult to sing like him!
Very true!
Excellent thanks for this one Chris - 100% agree, I think U2 have done amazing stuff for a really long time and he's got a very rare expressiveness. Its like he's come from the crooners like Sinatra and Neil Diamond plus from punk - got a bit of rock n roll snarl with a full bodied, rich tone mixed. Great falsetto too. Speaking of expressive singers, I would be interested to see your take on Amy Winehouse with her insane phrasing and exaggerated 'crow' yarl... ?
Great idea, thanks!!
Yes I was going to ask the same thing! I love her
Amazing insight, Chris. What a singer he is. Bono's not bad, either.
Bono's early singing was really bright, in my view - it's changed a lot over the years. My favourite era is Achtung Baby - live from Sydney, for example - but the Mexico Live show from 1997 is amazing, vocally speaking. I'd love to see a breakdown of that some time.
Great video.
You can really see the influences they have on Chris in this video XD
Man i loved this video lol Chris is so funny
Chris, I LOVE this video and instantly subscribed! I'm a college kid and my parents loving U2 has been such an influence to my musical taste and I was instantly hooked! If you can, I'd really love to know how to sing like Jon Bon Jovi(in his prime, rather than nowadays), since that's another of my favorite bands of all time! Cheers! Thanks so much again!
Ryo
Welcome to the channel! Thanks so much for the sub!
Thanks Chris
Thanks for sharing this one. I missed 'Sunday bloody sunday'... 😉 Very informative as always... It came to my mind now Ozzy Osborne, Lemmy from Motorhead, and maybe even some blues singers... Too much, I know...
Very helpful, Thank you !!
Great!
Aw I was waiting for this one! This guy (Bono) is unique and hard to tackle. So original and intense.
Great video once again! I'd love for you to review 1970s Elton John.
Good suggestion!
@@chrisliepe Please do Rufus Wainwright too.
Hey Chris, Love your videos they are so inspiring. I was getting very stale and boxed into copying a style until I started watching them. I am becoming more fearless and free in my practice so without meeting me, you've done WONDERS! 😊. I see other people are asking about Amy Winehouse but if you are going to look at female singers who have a rock edge Kate Bush would be my first pick esp The Dreaming Lp. I was never keen on U2 but your critique actually made me appreciate the artistry which I wasn't expecting at all. Keep up the good work 🤩
Awesome! Thank you!
Your rolling vibrato... has vibrato. Well done
You really should check out his earlier work. He got more adept at manipulating those gravelly tones as he got older, but he loses the choir-boy clarity of tone and pitch you’ll find on a record like 1981’s “October”. The high notes on songs like the title track and “Gloria” are extraordinary.
Thanks for this one and all your videos.I'd LOVE one on Paul Rodgers.
Paul Rodgers is a great shout. He’s the ultimate professional
Chris, there is this fantastic singer called Tom Chaplin from Keane, a band from London. His technique is mesmerizing since there’s actually virtually NONE distortion and cracking going on with his register, which is absulutely amazing… plus he manages to sing smoothly and effortlessly very difficult high notes. Please make a vid about Tom!
Great video! I would love a video like this one analyzing the voice of Marcus King. I love his sound and think it is worth looking into. Greets from Sweden!
Thanks!
Hey man i love these videos you post. they actually have started to help and i just found out about them. I was wondering if you could do a video on how to sing like Justin Furstendfeld of Blue October
Bono sounds like a sweet tube amp at the edge of distortion.
reminded me of the 'giving each note its own character' thing
As a singer Bono had fantastic range and tone. He was very Irish, as Sinaed, with tons of emotions and dynamics. Constant screaming/pushing/smoking/drinking sadly led to permanente damage of his instrument. He lost all his strengths by the end of the 90'. On ATYCLB he already sounds weak and old, sometimes almost unrecognizable. He regained some power 10 years later (singing lessons?) for a couple of years, but it was too late. I would really like to hear songs like Surrender and Magnificent sung by his '85 self.
Loved it. When Bowie? Yes , please?
Concerned and insightful sedated witch jajajajajajaj🤣🤣🤣!!!! I laughed for way too long at that!!! 😆👌
Hi Chris, thank you for another great "How to sing like" video. Did you consider Anders Fridén (In Flames)?
Thanks for that suggestion!
Hi Chris, nice analysis as asual !
I'd love to see an episode about Conor Mason from Nothing But Thieves, this guy as such an incredible voice
Thanks!!
Awesome Chris! Bono is a great singer and also a fantastic songwriter. One of the best for sure. How about David Lee Roth? How does he get those crazy screams? Thanks brother!
Great suggestion!
Great content as always Chris, thanks, it is fantastic! If I can tell, I feel your mic (or equalization, I dont know) is not the right for the purpose, when you talk its great but when you put volume and strenght it does'nt give the best result, but I love your videos and the way you teach, you are a great singer and teacher
Thank you!
Feel Bono does a honky-hooty thing live on high notes, you can really hear it on live versions of with or without you and early live versions of still havent found what im looking for
Hey Chris, I've got a suggestion for you, if you don't mind. There is an incredible vocalist out there in the rock community that I feel doesn't get the credit he deserves, but I would love to hear your input on his vastly versatile singing voice. That guy? BRENT SMITH of the band Shinedown. He is my second favorite vocalist after Myles Kennedy. Please consider making a video on this guy. Thank you.
Hey Chris. Great video! What microphone is that? Sounds really good and suits your voice really well.
Mojave MA200
Great analysis as usual Chris. May I suggest Doug Pinnick from King's X as another potential video.
Thank you!!
I love the videos and your amazing voice and I’d like to make a request for a video on John Lennon
I would like to see you analyze Stan Bush, which to my unprofessional ears shares some similarities to the the skills that you ascribed to Bono...
Never listened to U2 but I really enjoyed this video. Now again I request How To Sing Like Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace / Saint Asonia !!!!!!
I think if you analysed Richie Kotzen's style would be amazing
Another awesome video! Do you think you may be doing a luke combs version soon? He has such a great voice!
Thanks for the suggestion!
@@chrisliepe No problem man! Looking forward to it
Man It he only kept healthy his voice... he was a amazing, my favourite ever... just listen to his duet with clannads for the song In a lifetime.
Hello from St. Petersburg, Chris! Great stuff! Can you do a video on Shaun Morgan (SEETHER)? Thanks!
Thanks for the idea!
gold
Requesting Richie Kotzen again! Please, broooo! You rock! 💪🏻
Can you please do an analysis on James Dean Bradfield from Manic Street Preachers. He’s a very hard one to sing like especially when it comes to his belting techniques and his use of unbridled emotions.
Perfeito!!!!!
I'm new to your channel, but. You are reallllyyyy good man! Watched quiet a few of your videos and yes i'm a subscriber. 😁👍🏼 Loved your Maynard, Tool, A Perfect Circle video! Got a question tho. Have you ever done a video on how to sing like Steve Perry for Journey/ Separate Way's?
*Side note. Mudvayne/World So Cold i hurt my throat singing every time. Maybe i need to learn more from you how to distort sing without hurting my voice. 😁👍🏼
Check out this one! 😊 ua-cam.com/video/uhaoJcQozEU/v-deo.html
Chris Liepe Thank's! 😎👍🏼
I actually never listened to U2 before. In this style for me I occasionally listened to Glenn Frey and others that I very rarely listened to but I liked their tone would be Lou Gramm and George Michael.
Cool!
When you're a busy witch: "I'll get to you"
Hey Chris, any chance you'd take a look at some Peter Gabriel or Niel Young? Coach told me thatd be really helpful man. Appreciate all yah do!
Thanks!!
Peter Gabriel 100% Washing of the water by him helped me get creative with placing of high notes and learn how to swap from head voice quickly
Title of this video is " I'll get you" 😆
Could you please do an episode on Amy Winehouse? I'm obsessed with her style, but there really isn't much information out there on her singing technique. Since you are my favorite vocal coach on UA-cam, I'd love to hear your take on her! 🙏🙌
Good suggestion!
Love all that you teach us, I think your mic choice is wrong. Maybe a little darker mic or a tube mic. Keep the videos coming Chris.
Thanks! (It is a tube mic) :)
Noddy Holder ...yay ' c'man man - give it a shot !
:)
@@chrisliepe👍thanks Chris. Loving the uploads. would be truly fascinated by this one. Nod was the guvnor ' You know AC/DC asked him to officially be their singer. And Robert Plant greatly admired him. Of course he had a higher voice than a chipmunk on helium but how on earth did he get that sound ?!
Someone said I sound like Bono when i sing. So I came looking for examples and found this video. Was never a fan of U2, but I guess it's from listening to Radiohead all my life. After watching this video I'm still not sure if it was an insult or compliment. Pitchy but expressive?
Oliver tree!! Would love to see you do an analysis of his style as it is pretty unique and he is a seemingly very new sound in the industry :) Great video as always!
Thank you!
Master of Belting Bono !
Please can you do a video on Brandon Boyd of Incubus? :)
The live version of With or Without You on Rattle and Hum would have been better of a visit
Nice ... How about analyzing Jim Morrison's voice .. a voice indeliably etched in American's heads for the last half a century. You're a freaken genius ..
