Very new to woodturning in retirement and done the pens, spindle and boxes ( all of which I do enjoy) just looking at trying my hand at bowls but plain single species just dont do much for me plus larger blanks are expensive in UK...... I have just GOT to get into these !!!!!!!!!.. WOW, brilliant presentation and I learned so much, With so much experimentation available.. Ive found bowls I would love to create. Thank you Joe. Have bookmarked this video but will have a search for any others you have done. Great stuff and cant wait to get started on my first bowl from a board.
Great presentation with in depth detail. I have made several bowls from a board using scrap. I really like the dovetail idea. Thanks again for your great job and sharing your wisdom with us.
I'm in Texas and do mostly segmented work, and I want to say Thank You Sir for a Great Presentation ! Well done, as well as entertaining, with a Lot of Usable Knowledge ! Wish I was close enough to join a group of some kind, but I have to learn what I can from You Tube and Trial and Error. Thanks again.
Just popped back to watch the lesson again and to thank you sincerely for the expert guidance. Attempt one went well but sadly must have used old wood glue as it fell apart during sanding..OR possibly I made the walls way too thin. Second attempt at an eight inch segmented bowl was a success, a beautiful bowl. I dont know who was more surprised, my good lady wife or me. Reason for another viewing is third attempt under way for a 14 inch diameter bowl ( biggest I can turn on my lathe) made from an old garden bench slats of mahogany converted to boards.... Will let you know but I am having a lot of fun thanks to your presentation tutorial....

Now that was not only, awesome, it answered the question I had. And it gave me 1000 ideas for what I can do with the three-quarter inch walnut that I have. He was very entertaining.
Thank you for the great demonstration. I watched this last week and I am on my 4th bowl, it is so nice not having all the shavings lol. I use 1 inch thick material, very very forgiving. I turned a 16" walnut bowl but i put a 8" center, turned out a awesome salad bowl. Thanks again for the great idea
I agree with all of the comments below, wonderful demo. Very informative. I've made oval bowls using a similar method, but they never turned out this good, So Far! I can't wait to try the dovetail method.
Question for Dennis: Is there a way to get the handout PDF (as email) that Joe provided you? The video is great, very informative, entertaining, and I have enjoyed it. You guys are very lucky to get these great demonstrators. I loved Jimmy Clewes's videos you had for the platters making. Must see for any beginner woodturner, for sure.
The camera person had one job, but failed miserably , great presenter learned quite a bit, but this club needs someone more qualified to run their audio /video equipment!!!!!!!!!
When parting off the circles on the lathe using the speed square as a reference (around the 51 minute mark)... is it possible to cut them out at the opposite angle so that you don't have to remove the whole piece and re-mount over and over to remove each ring? i.e. the handle of the parting tool coming in from over the bedways towards the outside instead of from the outside cutting towards the center? That way the ring just falls off and hangs on your tool instead of being bounced around behind the stack and possibly banging into the chuck...
Superb presentation. I picked up a few techniques I've not used before. Suggestion, give the camera man some practice so everything the presenter shows gets inframe and the movement of the camera does not detract from the show.
I can still feel the sting of my woodwork masters hand around the back of my head when I forgot that lol and that was almost 55 years ago. Today...Take it out every time
That’s my uncle he passed away 12/25/19 what a great dude I highly regret not spending more time in life with him.
We all will miss this marvelous wood turner. He gave an excellent demo.

I wish the cameraman had got closeups of each bowl! Otherwise great presentation.
