i owned a Dx7, as many did, in the ‘80’s, and it sounded really good. It was a task to program, but often worth the trouble. The Arturia version, which I now own, sound better than the original, and with its beautiful GUI, it is a dream to program sounds. you have addition waveform to build the FM sounds, too. Also, this delivers 24 bit output, making the tones more smooth and rich, tho the app is switchable to the original DX7’s 12 bit, which has the grit of the original. Arturia really did it right on this one.
Really nice demo. I think Arturia has done the synth world a great favor by releasing this and the Synclavier; two instruments that were monsters of capability, but not practical for most programmers. The DX7 is of course famously hard to comprehend on a programming level, and the Synclavier cost as much as a house at the time. But, for me, experiencing the FM capabilities of these V versions has been revelatory. I really believe that FM is going to undergo a significant resurgence now that it's more accessible, and its power is more evident. I have NO affiliation whatsoever, by the way; just something that I've found very exciting.
Lovely demonstration! 👍 Btw, did you find any problems with the knobs acting up on your Keylab? A few of the knobs on mine started sending random midi values, making them unusable. I’d since replaced a couple of them (and damaged one in the process 🤦♂️😩) but now one or two of the others started to work erratically.
I'd been thinking about purchasing an old Yamaha DX-7, but there are concerns about the condition of the instrument (wear and tear, damages, etc.), power supply issues (possibly having to buy a separate power adapter), as well as shipping costs. I'd heard about the Arturia DX7 V... here I've found this video clip, and I'm sold on the product! Thanks for the demo and the inspiration. BTW, very nice playing! Love the sounds this thing can create, too. Yeah, I think I'll save up to get me the Arturia DX7 V.
