    24:40 - I love the complexity of these characters. Publicly, Cliff defended Howard and completely dismissed the charges. But the moment Erin left the room and he picked up his guitar, he had to pause to think about yet another piece of circumstantial evidence to add to the pile.

    • @donkfail1
      @donkfail1 8 місяців тому

      Cliff is being a good guy *and* a friend. When he is told Howard is a coke fiend he brushes it off outwardly. Saying "Yea, maybe you're right." without more evidence, or telling anyone he saw that bag fall out of his locker would be terrible for Howard if it isn't true. But he also seems seriously concerned and want to know more. He's not going to cover for Howard by lying, but he wants to help him too.
      In my opinion one of very few totally good people in this show.
      His tolerance toward Jimmy when he tried to get fired was admirable. I thought he would go over the edge at some point during that game and maybe even physically attack Jimmy (at least break his bagpipe), becoming another victim of Slippin' Jimmy who gets tarnished by just dealing with him.

    “Lady Liberty” is the same one we see above Saul’s office in BB. Also the patriotic music being played in the lobby of the Kettleman’s place of business can be heard playing of the lobby of Saul’s office in BB. I like to think Saul purchased both with the “carrot” money, though we don’t know for sure.

    Carrot and stick refers to an approach to get people to do something you want them to do. Either by rewarding them (carrot) or punishing them if they refuse (stick)

      I think that relates to working with stubborn creatures, like mules. You can either beat them or offer them a carrot.

      That's not it. The carrot is tied with a long string which is tied to a stick. The stick is then tied to the mule so the carrot dangles in front of his eyes, like a baited fishing rod. The carrot is always dangling in front of the donkey, motivating him to walk forward to get the carrot. But no matter how far he walks he'll never reach the carrot. It's a metaphor for a lure to entice your mark to work toward an unachievable goal. It's bait for a sucker.

    • @donkfail1

      Yes! So many get this wrong and think it's one method (a carrot on a stick), when it is basically another version of catching more flies with honey than vinegar. But in the later has a claim that the carrot/honey is always better. Not always true.
      Jimmie came in with the carrot/honey, but then Kim stepped in and offered the Kettlemans the stick/vinegar.
      Mike thinks Nacho would go for the carrot as he has cooperated so far, but Gus will only offer the stick (threatening his father) to keep him in line.
      The stick can work, but only for a while once you start using it. Sooner or later someone beaten will turn on the one with the stick. Unless Nacho keeps cooperating Gus will have to use that stick. A bluff stops working once it's called. And if he kills the father, he'll have to kill Nacho too.
      (In other languages "the carrot and stick" is called "the carrot and whip", leading to less misunderstanding.)

    I love the mystery surrounding Kim and Jimmy's plan. As for the Nacho story, Mike did deliberately place that statement in the safe to lead Bolsa to the motel where Nacho was holed up. Also of note though is that Mike pocketed Nacho's father's fake ID, it's the only thing he removed from the old safe but did not place in the new safe.

      They were briefly shown a couple of seasons back. I believe Nacho walked in, threw the girls some drugs, then went to the safe and checked out both IDs.
      Mike at least chose to protect Nacho's father by removing his fake ID from the safe when they wheeled in the new one.

    Yes, Jimmy and Kim are destroying the reputation of Howard. But as I rewatch this season, I am reminded as to WHY they were doing this whole plan in the first place. They aren't out to "get" Howard out or "spite". They just want to get the money from the settlement sooner than later.
    And, to be fair, not only does this help THEM, but it helps the CLIENTS. Remember these people are ELDERLY. There's no point in dragging this out over a couple of years when you can have a quick settlement. It still doesn't justify hurting Howard - especially now that we know he actually is a really nice guy. I am only telling you this so it takes a bit of the the sting out of season 6.
    Either way, you are in for one hell of a ride!

    • @dog-eared6991

      But their feelings and history with Howard and the spite they have toward him is exactly what allows them to target him and go this far. It's like watching Breaking Bad and saying that Walter keeps saying that he's doing it for his family so he must be doing it for his family. Spite is the motivating emotion, the "good deed" of settling Sandpiper to help the elderly is the justification.

    I LOVE how the first 2 seasons came into play in this episode. Of course the Kettlemans from season 1, but..."wolves and sheep", did Jimmy's last line ring a bell? Bingo! That what the man that ripped off Jimmy's father told to young Jimmy in a flashback in season 2 ep4 "in this wolrd there are wolves and sheep, wolves and sheep, figure out which one you want to be..."

    I love the use of insect/animal shots they've been doing here lately (that five lined skink was so big I honestly thought it looked like my Sudan plated lizard), especially the ants. It's interesting how the ants always seem to be tied to the cartel stuff, there's something there about worker ants and simply marching along... following orders.
    It's so hard to watch Kim and Jimmy I'm right there with you on that 😩 though you would THINK the kettlemans would have learned their lesson about skimming money by now. Geeez, some people

    You may already know this if you've watched ahead but theres a returning character that had to be recast due to Bob Odenkirks major heart attack during filming of this last season. They had to pause for a few months and the actor became unavailable. It might be jarring at first but I look at it this way.. better that than Bob dying .. and then obviously no more BCS.

    That whole scene with the Kettlemans was an act by Saul. He purposely name drops Clifford and Main so they will go there and makes sure to play off his emotional outburst at the end to really sell it. That's why he's smiling walking back to his car.

    • @hbk314
      @hbk314 9 місяців тому

      It's also why he tells them "As soon as you mention my name, guess who gets a cut!" The whole point was essentially to supplement the baggie of coke from the country club in Cliff's mind with something credible and non-coincidental. They went back there after the Kettlemans figured out they were being used. Kim jumped in after they didn't back down on threatening to tell Howard about the plan.

    Rest assured there will be consequences to what everyone is doing at the moment
    The breaking bad universe is big on the whole "butterfly effect". Minor actions have huge consequences
    You screw with your brother's insurance and not long after he ends up dead. You try to run a scam with a couple skateboarders and you end up becoming a cartel lawyer
    And the list goes forever on

    40:30 - The term "carrot and stick" comes from the days of training horses and/or donkeys. The stick was used to swat the animal on the behind (as punishment), and a carrot was often dangled in front of the (as a reward). This is what motivated the horse and/or donkey to move forward. We continue to use this term to this day.
