    Love to see you do a comparison between stainless steel verses titanium valves. Testing longevity and performance.

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  4 місяці тому +1

      Hello. Thanks for the suggestion. I probably wont be able to do this comparison because I currently only own 2 strokes myself. But I can tell you stainless steel valves are heavier and require higher tension valve springs to keep them from floating. The stronger higher tension valve springs put more stress on the timing chain, guides, and also valve seats. I personally suggest sticking with the titanium valves on these high revving motors.

    My initial guess was valve adjustment. Didn’t see the fuel pressure regulator issue coming. Got me thinking about replacing mine on my 17 450. It seems to always take 5-6 kicks hot or cold. Great and informative video Chris. Keepem coming. I especially like the troubleshooting vids.

    Fantastic info about the fuel pressure regulator and pump diagnosis. Question, on a kick start EFI bike, can you activate the pump long enough to test pressure by kicking or do you need a separate power source to run the pump like the service manual procedures?

      I have used the kick start lever to test pumps but its a real pain lol. Hello, thanks for the video! when you lap the valve seats if you use the old wornuot valve won't the seats be lapped with the wrong pattern? i mean if the old valve is concave and you use it as a pattern won't the lapped seats be concave too??? i understand that you will not ruin the titanium coat, but in case of using steel valves should i use the old valve for lapping or the new steel one? thankssssssssssss

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  4 місяці тому +2

      Hello and your welcome. I imagine it would if I worked at it long enough. I try to only lap it long enough to get a seal again. Typically I don't have to lap them and I try to avoid doing it unless its absolutely needed which is rarely but it does happen.Another viewer suggested the idea of using a new value for lapping only and then installing a new valve that wasn't used for the lapping, while that can be expensive that is a good option if extensive lapping is required. Yamaha manual doesn't state to use a new or old valve, they only say not to lap the new valve that will be used. With steal valves, it doesn't hurt to use the new steal valve but I think I would still try to use the old valve first if it only needs a quick easy lapping. But if its way out of wack and needs extensive lapping then a new valve is probably best.

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  3 місяці тому +1

      @@verarian The reason they say to put it at top dead center is to insure all the valves are fully closed and the cams lobe are not making contact with the valve cam buckers. Meaning the valve is on the base circle of the cam. You can do that on the bench by rotating the cam till the lobe of the valve is facing up and then checking the valve clearance.

    Non sense using old valve.

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  4 місяці тому +2

      Hello. In most cases like on automobiles and such with steal valves I agree. However these motors are different. In the Yamaha service manual it says " This model uses titanium intake and exhaust valves. Do not use the valves used for lapping the valve seat. Always replace valves for lapping with new valves"... In a previous video I showed how a brand new head with brand new valves does not need any lapping at all to seal up and work well. From the factory these heads and valves are machined with such tight tolerances that they don't even lap them during assembly. If you lap a new titanium valve you will wear into the first layer of the valve that is needed for the valve to have a long life. Since a new valve will seal with a new head perfectly its not the new valve that needs correction in this case but the old head that may new correction for the new valve. The mild lapping done in this video using the old valve was just to clean up any imperfections of the used heads valve seat so the new valve can seat on it squarely again. I know it sounds strange and goes against conventional thought.

    Hi! Thanks for the great video. Manual says valve guide has to be changed as well when changing a valve, with all clearance work on top. How critical do you see this is really required? Also regarding the sealing, what is actually a measure of a good seal? In some videos (cars related) I see ppl do vacuum tests or leaving liquid for an hour and checking no single drop appears. In you example it is rather relaxed dripping test. As I have something in between (a slightly noticeable film of water building within a few minutes around contact surface), I try to understand if I can skip all this valve trueing hassle.

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  2 місяці тому

      Hello. As long as the head doesnt have a ton of hours on it (like well over 200) and a valve hasnt contacted the piston then the valve guides will still be good to reuse with new valves. Honestly when it comes time to replace valve guides its almost better to just replace the whole head. The guides they sell are oversized and need machining of the head to get in the head. And then its gotta be straight in or it will also need the valve seat worked too. It better be a dam good machine shop (which is far and few between). Its better and almost cheaper to just buy a new head when that day comes. Anyway. You should be good to reuse your current head and valve guides. For the sealing, if yours is only getting a little wet after a while it will be good. It will have enough compression to start up and any imperfections that lapping would have corrected will happen on its own as the motor runs and the valve and seat get worked into each other. You should be good.

For me if the heads coming off, I do the piston and base gasket as well. Sometimes the rings don't seat as well then the cylinder is removed and put back on a used piston and rings so this is why its best to just toss a new piston in while your in there. You could just buy new rings but keep in mind rings need to seal on not only the cylinder walls but also the piston. So a whole knew piston and rings is best

      Hello. Its clutch chatter. These YZ's are known to be loud with clutch chatter even new. And its kinda hit and miss, one will be loud the other not so much. If it worries you it doesnt hurt to pull the clutch cover and check everything out. If all looks good, then just button it up and at least you know.

    Hi, i have a 2019 yzf250 that will only start off a bump but will start fine off the electric start when hot. I done a compression test and was only getting 25 psi. Would this be the piston or worn valves as in your video? Thanks

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  3 місяці тому

      Sounds like valves. Low comp but will start fine once its warm. That tells me its the valves. A quick way to check is to remove the valve cover and check the intake valve clearance.

    • @johnnew-in3dp
      @johnnew-in3dp 3 місяці тому +1

      I originally took it all apart as I assumed it was the piston but the piston looks like its recently been changed by the previous owner and the piston ring gap is measuring at 0.25mm which is in spec according to manual. I have checked the intake valve clearance and can't fit a feeler guage under at all so does that mean it is the valves at fault and piston is okay? Thanks

    Hi buddy , a motorcycle with a kickstarter like honda 450 crf 2010, should we hear the fuel pump for 1 or 2 seconds or is it just motorcycles with electric starter? Thanks !

    • @UpAllNight91

      The kick start bikes are hard to hear the fuel.pump because they don't get much power while kicking. For them its best to just run 12 volts directly to them to test them

    On my 2021 you pull the high idle choke know out to turn it on and when you let off throttle it snaps back in and it’s back to normal

    • @UpAllNight91
      @UpAllNight91  4 місяці тому

      On this 2020 you push in the knob for the high idle choke. I verified this by also feeling the throttle as the button is pressed in, I can feel it also crack into the throttle a little as the button is pressed in. To release it, usually a quick blip undoes it like you mentioned however this bike I'm finding i have to give it like 1/4 throttle and then let go for it to undo the high idle choke. Probably just a little stiff from sitting i imagine but it does seem to be working if 1/4 throttle and then dropping the throttle

    I have never seen a plug do that.😮 🏜👍
    Edit: on valve seat checks i use a very, very thin coating i mean very thin coat of grease on the seat and pop the valve in and remove without turning it and you can see how the valve has seated. 🙂
