  • Hello everyone! This is my first UA-cam video! I hope it helps some folks. I did my research on dash cams for the 718 Boxster, and I really liked the FixcamX because it's nearly invisible. However, their web site forces you to choose "Model C", which requires running a cable through the headliner and pillar to the fusebox. That's too much WORK for me to take on!
I found a video from FitcamX (link below) that showed a much quicker install on a 718 Boxster, pulling power from the overhead lamp. I chatted with customer service via their website’s chat widget, and asked if they now had a quick-installed method for the 718 Boxster. He had to ask his manager, who had to ask a tech, and the answer that came back was that the car in the video is a China car and they’re not sure the same approach will work for a U.S. car. So of course I volunteered to try it out, and thank goodness it worked perfectly! The y-cable they sent plugged right into the factory harness, and powered the dash cam and rear cam flawlessly.
I chose to place the rear cam near the rear view mirror, facing the cabin. It does come with a very long extension cable, should you choose to try to find a place to mount it closer to the back of the car. I’m happy with both the front- and rear-facing video I’m getting, and the clean and easy install.

Another “Porsche 718” video that showed up recently - maybe it’s a Cayman?

Thanks for this, using it to help mirror tap a RDetector in my Boxster. Not many videos on this available...

I ordered this kit on black Friday and the y adapter cable is now included.

Great video! Thanks for sharing. Sounds like a great product, that does not look obvious, as compared to others in the market.
My only observation is your rear camera mounted "too high" and does not capture much of what is going on the rear, other than you and the inside of the boxster. :-)
Do they supply enough cable to reach the back and possibly install in between the headrest?

Yes, they supply a long cable so you can try to put it wherever you want.

Great job. I just ordered mine. I wonder if I need to ask them to send me the Y adapter or if they'll send it automatically? If you don't like that trim piece bulging out you could Dremel it a little bit to clearance the wire.

Hey Robert. You'll probably need to ask them. I've sent them my video, so hopefully they will update their web site soon with a separate option for the 718. Until then, it's best to chat with them through their chat widget or send them an email at info@fitcamx.com. They're very responsive.
No need to dremel the stock trim piece. It already has a flexible rubber flap right where the wire needs to route through, so it was super easy to make it look nice.
Some 718 forum members have asked if I considered putting the rear cam on the passenger side. I did consider it, but there's no way to flip the video in the FitcamX app, and I wanted the wire run from the cam to the lamp assembly to be as short as possible. You could certainly put it on the passenger side if you're ok with the video being upside-down, or having the wire come out the right side of the cam and do a 180 degree turn to get back to the lamp assembly.

Great video! Does the parking mode work when it’s wired into the overhead light?
