  • SAAB/GM F35 manual transmission disassembly video. I apologize for the audio, I do not yet have a mic and the camera I am using is an action sports camera... Does not focus the greatest, or at all up close!
    This applies to most years of the F35, the Cobalt variant is a bit different, but this is a guideline and can be applied for the most part, shift mechanism is different.
    Do this at your own risk and remember to consult your factory service manual!

      Great video, I have a question, I've taken the motor and f35 trans and installed it into a Ariel Atom. The shift levers that are on the trans had to be switched around and custom made to fit properly in a rear engine set up. I now need to remove the gear selector and neutral levers so that a adjustable levers can be reinstalled. Do I need to do anything special before I remove the roll pins and levers. Maybe put it into gear ? Thanks

    Good job, cool tutorial .. i'm going to the garage to put up my gearbox. (Is it possible that 500km after replacing the coupler in SAAB 9-3 started to suddenly jumped 5th gear?)

    • @obsoleteprofessor2034

      I had a 92 Camry start to pop out of 5th after 450k miles. The available videos suggested I replace the 5th gear which was easily replaceable under the cover similar to this transmission. I eventually replaced the entire transmission because I felt the bearings were out. Whenever I would go in and out of torque with the throttle while in 3rd or 5th gear, the shift handle would move an inch in either direction in the quadrant. I eventually learned it was because the entire gear train in the transmission shifted in the case because of bad bearings.

    This has to be one of the most difficult transaxles ever made to work on. I have one of these in my Ariel Atom and would like to install a 6 speed Quaife gear set that I bought a while ago. However,after disassembling an F35 I bought from a junkyard....I decided not to tackle it. I can't find anyone who would even consider doing the Quaife install,although the kit was specifically designed for the F35. I've done Honda Civic and Ford MTX75 transaxles..which were a snap compared to the F35. I don't suppose you would be interested in doing the install?

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  7 років тому +1

      That is something I could do for sure, did you purchase the straight cut, or helical gearset? Did you also purchase their limited slip differential for your f35 6-speed?

    • @breakawaymotorsports
      @breakawaymotorsports 7 років тому +1

      I bought the semi-helical cut gear set.They look almost straight,but have a very slight angle. I also bought their "install" kit,which they said was necessary to install the 6 spd. gears. My transaxle already has the Quaife LSD from the factory (it's a GM that uses cables to shift) and is 4:05 final drive ratio,but I have a set of factory 4:45 final drive gears I'd like to use with the Quaife 6 speed,which will make 5th ideal for a track use top end gear ratio. The stock transaxle 5th is pretty much a cruise gear. I road race the car..with about 220whp..so not big power..but it's more than enough for a 1300lb car.

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  7 років тому

      Nice, those 4:45's will be great. Does the Quaife helical set come with a new output shaft? That would determine which ring gear you can use, I remember they are longer due to the design, and 6-speed..

    • @93Viggen23

    Wow, fantastic video Stephen, thanks. I found this while searching for info on my F35 Cobalt trans. I have some serious gear whine and it is speed-specific, not RPM specific, perhaps I may pick your brain? The sound happens both in gear and in neutral, and is most noticeable at highway speeds of 50 and up. Sound is equally loud during accel, while coasting in and out of gear, and while deaccel downhill (backlash side). This leads me to believe it has to do with the final drive or output shaft, I think. You mention a differential bearing, can these be changed with the trans in the car or do I need to pull it out to fix? Thanks so much

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  6 років тому

      You will have to remove the transmission from the vehicle and disassemble it unfortunately! I know the exact noise you are talking about, usually that is from a crush sleeve that has lost it tension/failing/failed, in turn that wears out the pinion bearings (crush sleeve is on the pinion/output shaft) as well as the differential bearings. Usually I replace all bearings when I am in a gearbox :).

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  Рік тому

      Ideally you’d want to measure the differential Preload after changing that. There’s some shims and some basic math, but also involved in that is setting the output shaft and input shaft preloads as well in a certain sequence with the box in a certain position… might get away with it but might be slightly off.

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  6 років тому

      Did you already take it apart? Usually that is caused from a bad mis-shift, which takes out the engagement sleeve for that gear as well as the gear itself (the engagement teeth on the gear will be rounded off). Or could be from a failed crush sleeve eventually causing the hard shift to 2nd.

  • @ThatRegularGuyIRL
    @ThatRegularGuyIRL 4 роки тому

    Hey there man! Your video is helping me out big time right now. I wanted to ask you, is it possible to remove all the bolts and separate the case without doing the work on the top with 5th gear and such? The reason I ask is because my sealant between the case and the bell housing just needs replacing and I'm trying to find the best way to replace it without taking 5th gear apart and replacing those parts as well and buying the special tools required. The shop wants to charge 500$ to do it.

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  4 роки тому +1

      Unfortunately no, you have to pull the 5th gear components off to split the case where it seals, you also will need a crush sleeve and some other items.

    • @ThatRegularGuyIRL
      @ThatRegularGuyIRL 4 роки тому

      More than likely yes, as long as the gasket doesn't space the cover out from coming into contact with anything.

Now what ? i have after market axles on the car so could that be the problem or did i not do something properly when the axle was reinstalled?

    • @93Viggen23
      @93Viggen23  6 років тому

      Either you tore the seal on install of the axle/seal or aftermarket axle is not the correct diameter where it seats into the trans.

    • @caymccarp34
      @caymccarp34 6 років тому +1

      Stephen Boykin , i came to the same conclusion after i messaged you. I used the calipers and checked the inner diameter of the seal . It measured 1.32 the driveshaft shop axle measured 1.38 . The diameter of the axle is to small. So im trying a ZZP seal which they mentioned it helps with mis alignment different axles, so on. So we'll see. Might have to have that part remade. Thanks for the response.

      Last part to be removed is the differential which the ring gear attaches to. You have to remove the differential, then remove the 11 bolts that hold the ring gear on, make sure you have new fasteners for the ring gear as they are one time use bolts. Use 12 on the Quaife with high strength threadlock.

      Have you tried shifting into reverse with the cable detached from the shift mechanism at the transmission, and manually tried to shift it via the lever the cable pulls/pushes? If you take the cable off and try that and it still persists then there is something internally wrong, could be a number of things but cannot be certain until it is taken apart and inspected :). No, certain fasteners need threadlocker, some need sealant on them... You have to set the input shaft pre-load via dial gauges and shim packs, same for differential, also have to setup the output shaft pre-load, slightly different. Circlips/retaining clips matter which side is facing the load, etc.

      The torque is not a predetermined number. You measure axial play of the shaft against the case, take the measurement and use Saab's data sheet regarding output shaft pre-load and then use a special GM tool with serrated marks on it and set it to the number you come up with via Saabs service information.

      The plastic piece that is in the hole is to cover it so that nothing unwanted gets in there. The hole is for when you are aligning the shift rod and shifter in the car when setting up the shift linkage, you stick a pin in there and it holds/locates the shift rod in the transmission.

It was getting harder and harder to get into reverse so thought it might be the cables so I adjusted here and there but nothing changed except then I couldn't get into 5th.
