The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is one of the most heavily guarded sites in the whole world. A well-trained, carefully selected team of officers known as ‘sentinels’ are handpicked and chosen to guard the site that holds the remains of the Unknown Soldier. These guards are always standing ready to defend the tomb from any harm, and a great deal of emphasis is placed on maintaining the sanctity of the tomb. But what is so special about the tomb that it requires so much security?

I'm not a U.S citizen, but it disgusts me that ANYONE would be disrespectful to this ceremony. This is honoring the men and women who have fought, not just for your freedom, but for their lives. Thank you to those who have serve, have served and will serve in the Military.

I served with someone who was a guard of the tomb. He was so carefree and jolly but when ever he talked about his time guarding, he displayed a level of stern attitude I have never seen since.
Yeah those honor guards are pretty disciplined, it was never my thing but I had respect for those who did it,

I'm an American citizen, and I feel the same way about the King's Guard (I still haven't gotten used to calling it that) at Buckingham Palace. I hate when tourists treat legitimate soldiers with jobs that command respect with disdain or like they are props for selfies or pranks. It's childish and rude. Both of these places hold historical importance, as well as military importance. Thank you for supporting our Unknown Soldier.
Well as an American if that soldier told me to be quit I would tell him to get fucked. No one can tell me when I can or can't talk in public. I find their job worthless to guard dead people. Why don't we train them to fight wars or send the boys home. This is a wast of tax money

The tomb embodies the symbolism of not who is laid to rest there- but all unknown who have served and died. The honor of being a tomb guard is unparalleled.
This is so beautiful. I’m a British (Welsh) man, but this unnamed soldier gave his life, and deserves all of the dignity his sacrifice meant.
I'm Danish but I visit Arlington every time I'm in Washington and I visit the monument to the unknown soldier's grave every time. The idea behind both the monument and the guard of honor is universal and as a visitor you should show good behavior and humility to the many soldiers who through the ages have lost their lives for a cause. If you can not comply with the few but simple rules that apply on the spot- THEN STAY AWAY!

For any soldier who ever feared that they might die alone and forgotten, these guards are so incredibly dedicated for that very reason; to ensure that no one is EVER forgotten. And I don't believe it's strictly for U.S. soldiers, but for everyone who made the ultimate sacrifice.
I visited here in 1994 from Ireland. The solders professional and training is absolutely unbelievable..And they are absolutely pristine in their appearance. A true honour to watch these lads.

I saw this ceremony in person nearly 40 years ago. This video reminded me of the respect and honor of the U.S. Soldiers guarding the tomb of The Unknown Soldier. I am humbly grateful to see that this is one sacred tradition that hasn't been messed with in America.

The security at the cemetery makes it really difficult to pull off. Every visitor has their possessions checked and ID examined prior to entering.
My grandfather helped carry the bodies to the tomb during his time in the Army. He served during WWI and the Korean War. He was also a Drill Instructor at one point.

Years ago my boss was a former tomb guard. The calm authority of that service carried over to his professional life. An outstanding individual.
I had the honor to speak to an off duty Guard. He amazed me with his degree of commitment. I was humbled by his presence.
I have a great, great Uncle who was one of the original guards and served there faithfully there for years before being retired to the old soldiers home in NY State. Uncle Haze, Hazen Fox served in both WWI and WW II was given the honor of burial at Arlington upon his death. He'll never be forgotten and my family is so proud of him.

I've never visited the tomb but I have visited the Arizona in Pearl Harbour. The retired marine veteran in charge of all the visitors got pretty upset with some disrespectful people talking while he was explaining things. He basically told them that if they can't stop talking to leave the premises immediately so those who were respectful could continue with the tour. Those soldiers and those retired marines view these sort of things as a calling and they deserve all the respect you can muster.
As a vet my greatest respects to the fallen soldier and the Sentinels. I appreciate this ceremony as we have a 'Tomb of The Unknown Soldier' in the UK. Sadly there are no guards and I think it is time we HAD guards at their tomb. To all those who fell, serve or have served your countries - Thank you for your service - FREEDOM is not up for debate!

I am from Switzerlan, my uncle who is a US citizen took me to the tomb in 1975 at the age of 16. We watched the ceremony. I had goosebumps. My mom is US and for me these men are heroes watched by heroes, god bless them, god bless America.

I have full respect for both the guards of the Tomb of The Unknown Soldier and the Buckingham palace guards, and I hate anyone who would even try to disrespect them. They dedicated their lives to protecting those spots 24/7 and people still disrespect them like they don’t matter
Quite a few years ago my oldest daughter was selected to lay a wreath at the Tomb during her 8th grade class trip to Washington DC. I was one of the trip chaperones so I was able to attend the event. I was lucky enough to be allowed into the 'Press' section in order to have an unobstructed view of the ceremony. It is indeed quite an honor and something that anyone visiting the nation's capitol should try to see.
There are few honors allowed to civilians that are higher than laying a wreath at the Tomb Of The Unknown. I hope you instilled the importance.
I hope she realizes the honor granted her in that moment, felt the humility and gratitude for those that lay beneath her, and never forgets for the rest of her days.

While I don't know if it's "the coolest", it is the most widely respected job in the US Army. The level of discipline required surpasses any other position the service may require. Sadly many people in our country have not been taught the importance of reserved , dignified behavior in the presence of funerals or services like the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and what it signifies in our military . Children taught at an early age will learn respect for life .
I see people show up for graduation and funerals dressed like bums. It's disgusting. Even if you're poor, you can get NICE dress pants, a dress shirt and tie at Goodwill for less than $20.

I spent the great majority of my career in the Marine Corps in the field. I HATED spit and polish. I have tremendous respect for those who can endure the day-by-day duties the Old Guard carry out.

Having been there for the ceremony, it is beyond my comprehension that anyone would disrepect the tomb and the meaning. I was in 8th grade and my grandfather told me to watch and remain silent. I did so and understood even then.
I have had the honor to witness this mission a few different times. And as a moderately decorated Infantry veteran of 39 months in direct combat; the discipline all of thes Soldiers display with every action truly is admirable.
Being a Veteran myself, I have nothing be the ultimate respect for those soldiers fortunate enough to be chosen for this admirable duty. If you haven't looked at the requirements and training they endure to achieve the ultimate assignment.

The level of discipline of the tomb guards is very impressive. They are a stellar example of US military commitment to honoring those you have fallen in service to this immensely blessed country. To me it is an honor to just watch these Guards doing their duty. Anyone who talks or tries to walk on that sacred ground deserves everything that is administered to them. What a lot of people don’t know is that these men are guarding absolute heroes, and should adhere to everything that is asked of them. This is hard to describe how much pride I have for these guards, but they will always be at the top.

Thank you for explaining why the unknown soldier is so highly honored and protected, I wasn’t aware of the full story until now, it brought tears to my eyes, and people that can visit there should be respectful! Those soldiers died defending this country, and I prey their souls are resting in peace. I wish I could go and pay my respects to them. Thank you for honoring them this way.

Some 45 years ago I attended ceremony of the changing of the guard. The atmosphere was of absolute respect. The men and women who guard our unknown soldier are the cream of the crop. Thank you for your dedication🇺🇸

I remember visiting Arlington National Cemetery as a teenager. The Tomb of the Unknown soldiers, the Guards and the Changing of the Guards was one of the most awe-inspiring and patriotic visuals I have ever experienced. The dedication and respect for these soldiers and what this country should be showing is incomparable. ❤

In July of 1993 I was 17 years old, and on a youth conferencetrio. I had the opportunity to watch and witness, the Changing of the Guards. It was so reverent, it bright tears to my eyes to watch these young men who were not much older than me, to be so devoted in all forms of weather. It was blazing hot that July day. Never once did the guard wipe sweat off his face. I hope to go back and see this beautiful, patriotic 24/ 7, 365 honor. God bless our veterans, and current active duty hero's!🇺🇸❤

I’ve been there and no one spoke a word! So many of us were just overcome with emotion..tears were shed! I cannot stand disrespectful people!
My parents took me to see the tomb of the Unknown Soldier when I was about 14 years old. I distinctly remember one of the guards yelling at a young 5-6 year old child who was talking during the ceremony. Powerful memory!! These guards mean business. What I witnessed was the ultimate sign of respect. God Bless 'em.

My Drill Sergeant in Basic Training had been a member of the Old Guard. When he walked or marched he had same type step which you see them performing at the TOTUS ceremony. They command respect and dignity!

I was at Arlington for a school trip a few months ago and saw this ceremony, and I’ve got to say that’s it’s absolutely AMAZING. Their precision and accuracy and the way they do things is amazing. I love this because it shows the deep respect and honor that America is built upon. This is by far one of the greatest things I’ve ever seen.

The Sentinels are like the Coldstream Guards at Buckingham Palace, don't let the pomp and pageantry fool you, they're real soldiers.
Coldstream Guards are one of 5 Regiments of foot guards that provide sentries for Public Duties at various locations in the UK. Other units of the British Army, Navy and I believe Airforce have provided Sentries for at one time or another.

You know how James Bond is supposed to have "Licence to Kill", well he doesn't - MI6 agents dont have such licence - the only people in Britain who actually do are the guards at the Monarch's residence.
@@sallyganonn1955 actually many covert British intelligence officers have a licence to kill, as do armed police, or any other person issued with a green card, the rules for opening fire. I had one myself.

I was privileged to visit Arlington Cemetery some years ago and the memory stays. The Military Discipline of the Guards of the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier was absolutely outstanding.
The precision incredible to observe.
I am a UK visitor and felt very proud for the USA Militry. 👏

saw this first hand a few years ago when my wife and I visited. I was so moved by the level of commitment by the soldiers. I can help but cry when I see soldiers honored, but especially here. It was absolutely amazing. I plan on taking my kids back here so they see this. I feel it is important that everyone see this and all the other monuments around Washington D.C. So much history and tradition there.
I had the same reaction when I visited DC briefly in '97. I was surprised at how emotional I became...I was in awe

If anyone doesn't understand why honoring the unknown dead is important. Image giving your life only to be forgotten. We do not let those who die for our the cause to be disrespected for that sacrifice. The ultimate sacrifice, to lay down your life for one's friends, loved ones, and country.
So they should also honor all those native americans that were killed and nobody knows who they are.
There are many "unknowns" in military cemeteries; the inscriptions on their markers ["An American Soldier"] are supposedly graven just a little deeper than those with names in the notion than on some future day these will still be legible when the others are eroded into oblivion.
It's the sort of sentimentalist touch that informs the much grander Tomb of the Unknowns (there are the remains of three bodies there).
I don't disapprove. Ceremony and sentiment are powerful adjuncts to historicity and molders of patriotism. All the same, the Guard Mount, and to some extent the marble itself, is political theater.
Even allowing for the chance that some utter a-hole would try for his 15 minutes of fame by "desecrating" the Tomb, what harm could he actually do to it?
The statuary to the unknown dead is an essentially European tradition and an anachronism in the time of DNA testing. [The Vietnam Era Unknown, former fourth member of the interred, was "sprung" thence after examination.]
The problem with all such idolatry is not that it's bad of itself, but that like flags, badges, pledges, invocations and martial music, it too often serves as a condensation point into which solemnity can be channeled, satisfying the need for it in mundane life.
Moments of armed men screaming for silence and respect, demands for _shows_ of concern contrast vividly with the absence of genuine care and devotion seen in the January 6th insurrection and the crocodile tears shed for lives destroyed by government negligence.
Imagine how Jesus feels. He laid down his life for all of mankind and is utterly disrespected every day. I couldn't care less for some man in a uniform..

I went to Arlington just over a decade ago and was present for an instance of changing the guard. The only time the soldiers raised their voices was to announce the ceremony. The silence was extremely powerful and awe-inspiring.
Vast majority of visitors are respectful and follow the rules.
My granddaughter was fortunate enough to lay a wreath at the tomb of the unknown soldier at the age of 15. Such an honor!

We are grateful for the Tomb Guard's devotion to duty and all that they represent. Our society could learn a lot from those men and women for sure.

I was there recently, and to say that I was impressed is an understatement. They're very coordinated, very focused, and very good at their jobs, it was quite a pleasure to watch the changing of the guard. And thankfully, everyone there was indeed respectful.

I'm a United States Marine Corps Veteran.The somber, reverent presentation expresses the Honor every military member deserves . The inward dedication and patriotism is recognized with respect. Something rare lives within the soldier. Some have a certain need to fulfill.The majority are drawn to service from the heart of GODS spirit. THAT'S WHY WE CAN LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE. I’ve been here during an 8th grade field trip back in 2006. Being the son of a veteran and having numerous family members and friends who have served, currently are serving, or paid the ultimate sacrifice, I stayed silent the whole time i was there and watched. Not one time did i take a picture nor film anything. Just stood there and watched.
Im like that with any sort of gravesite. Even when im driving past a cemetery and have music on, i lower the volume out of respect.
These guards are very special. They represent the best this country has to offer.
And yet do not even have the common courtesy to not wear sunglasses.

@@mauricematla1215 not excuse. Reason. Eye color differentiates you from "unknown soldier" the nameless fallen allies, friends, brothers, fathers, sons... all of them were different in their way. They are all the same in the way that all who knew them have died and their stories are known only to God. Each sentinel is supposed to be ONE of the fallen soldiers. Hence the reason the on duty tomb guards doesn't have a rank insignia... so as to not outrank the fallen soldiers.
No, this is not the "coolest" job in the US Military. It is, however, one of the most respected positions to hold and should be given that respect at all times.
What is the coolest job when you're dedicated to serving Country? Some may not like my son's job, but he loves it, and the men he works with. I can hear it in his voice when he speaks of them. He nor his men would desecrate the Capitol Building, or disrupt the sacred honor of our fallen heros. Some ignorant Americans believe being free means you can act like a damn fool anywhere.
@@dancingcloudlew4311 I say "not the coolest" because that particular position is one of the hardest. The "cool" jobs are the ones were there is no risk of life. The ones that are easy and safe. I've seen some of these men and women get sick from just the weather. They are an amazing group of soldiers. I served 11 years in 3 different branches and loved every minute of it. Thank you for raising a son with such devotion to his country, that he can carry on the great traditions of our military.

It is sad to me that there are people who visit the tomb and act like fools. This is a sacred place that deserves respect to honor those who died for our country, not a clown show. The level of dedication these guards show is very humbling. Much respect for them and all who served.

@@mauricematla1215 courage and personality are two separate things. Did you know in the military whatever metals you've earned can never be taken from you? In other words if a soldier's life suddenly goes south for whatever reason: divorce, arrest, conviction, etc and he gets busted down to lowest rank for insubordination or crimes the metals remain because they were Earned. Also if said soldier reaches retirement at his lowest rank(provided discharge is honorable) he is still awarded highest rank (for income) held during career because it was Earned. The military views things differently than civilian. B_ _ _ _ _ _ or not, achievements are recognized and honored.
I was a high school student with a group at a wreath laying ceremoy, and a middle aged guy, not with our group, was loud and they yelled at him. We were amazed an adult was getting yelled at. Whoot whoot we were impressed
My father was the Sergeant of the Guard in the Old Guard and is one of the oldest living Sentenels of the Tomb. I am very proud of his role.
To disrespect the dead in that way is sacrilege, so be warned.

At 16 years old I was priveledged to watch the changing of the guard. It had a profound effect on me! The solemn respect brought me to tears! Still does! My first experience of reverence for the gravity of the price paid for our freedom!
This dedication is rare. You can bet those soldiers accomplish things, following their military service.
I remember when I laid a wreath at the tomb during my 7th grade washington trip. My group got the chance to talk to an ex-sentinel and he handed me a Arlington National cemetery challenge coin, I still have it to this day.
My friend and I actually got to lay the wreath back in December of 2017 when we were on our 8th grade field trip. We felt extremely honored and it was well worth writing the essay!

I worked with a vet who did tomb guard duty. He was very proud of his job, but stressed to me how difficult it was. I stood enough watches in the USN to know that this is not a job for everyone and understand why one must apply for it-John in Texas

Only the very best are asked without applying first. Others, who apply, must have a spectacular record, even in their civilian lives before joining the military. The guard is held to an even higher standard than Presidential Candidates excepting for the minimum age requirement.
I lol because I did a lot of watch's in the Navy too, literally "watching" aircraft and fuel & could barely keep my shirt tucked in or hat on or check in every 15 mins. let alone the commitment these people have. my thoughts are always for the unknown or mia. Peace. Rick
@@wichitarick USAF Security Police. I stood guard with a loaded M-16 for 8 hours on ramp, with 3 E-3s & 2 KC-135s during a tropical storm at Clark AB Philippines. I was wearing my rain gear and was hot wet & miserable, I even had 2 inches of water flowing over the toes of my boots. That was easier than the tomb guards.

It is an honor to hold such an esteemed position. As a young child I was brought to tears by them. But, I lost family in WWII and had , and still.have, close family members who have served in every war, conflict and branch of the military. I well understood the sacrifices of war. IMO, it should be a punishable offence to not show any respect at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier
