As someone with a hearing processing disorder, and as someone who is pretty much all around useless, this video terrified me because i could NOT understand wtf they were yelling. Im just imagining my dumb ass wandering out there and getting shot
The thing is, they have an understanding that kids will make some noise. There's an expectation to shush a young child, but a baby crying or a toddler too young to understand respect isn't expected to be silent. If it becomes distracting, the parent should step away and that's that. The problem isn't the children so much as the childish adults who can't follow simple logical instructions like, "When we arrive at the tomb, you're not permitted to pass the chains and rails."
I have only been there once. My siblings and I were all young children (9, 6, 4, and 3). We were always very well behaved due to our parents' excellent teaching and discipline. We had absolutely no problem sitting still and remaining silent and respectful. So, in agreement with the three replies above mine, parents are the ones to blame, not the kids.
Like most others in this thread, I also visited the ceremony when I was younger. I thought it was boring at the time, but it’s something I’ll never forget.
After watching and commenting I flew to DC and road the subway to Arlington Cemetery just to watch the changing of the guard! It was during a bad heat wave. Very brutal just watching. These men are awesome for doing what they do. Anyone that criticize these men don’t have the balls, courage, or heart to even deserve to live in this great Country!!!
Imagine being so self absorbed that you can't respect the dignity of the fallen. A monument to the fallen of the CSA, of Maoist China or even Nazi Germany (if presented in good faith) requires a degree of sobriety.
There needs to be signs all over with this simple message: "There are only two rules here for visitors. 1. Stay behind the damn barrier. 2. Shut the hell up until you are out of earshot of the monument. Failure to follow either of these rules will result in a very harsh warning at best, and a brutal ass-kicking at worst, depending on how patient the guard is feeling."
COBRA DARKNISS nope, loaded but not charged. They used to be show rifles, but trespassers and people assaulting the guards got them equipped with live rifles and ammo. That loud “chk-chk” is not for show.

You are either stupid or have never heard the sound of a round being chambered in a rifle.
The bayonet on that rifle is real. The magazine has live ammo. They are kept unchambered. Unless they've been briefed to be wary of possible threat they issue 3 verbal warnings. If you approach after the first warning or fail to remove yourself after the third, the gun is brought to bear and a round is audibly chambered to serve as a visual and audible warning.
There are also numerous armed MPs around the Tomb of the Unknowm soldier. Unless the Sentinel deems you a threat to themselves, others, or the Tomb itself you will not be shot but the MPs will remove you from the premises.
This video shows that they are guards, not performers.
Well said.
True
They only do the routine out of respect for the dead soldiers. If someone actually came across that line with malicious intent, they'd get lit up. Long story short, respect the dead and don't get shot
No if they were guards, they would have detained these people at gun point, tackled them or shot them on site....Because in actual secured sites, if you are caught tresspassing you don't get the luxury of leaving on your free will...You would be escorted in some way, shape or form, whether it be in cuffs, or in a body bag.
Then there is also the fact that if they were actually pulling security they wouldn't be pulling security in tailored service dress uniforms, because those are incredibly expensive and rip and tear at the slightest bit of exertion...The coat alone is over $200 that is just the coat, with out being tailored, or anything sewn on to it, and this is also not including their awards aka ribbon rack(s)

This happen to me when I was probably 10 yrs old I fell or something I forget it was back in the 90s all I remember is that the soldier pointed his rifle and hollered at me it put the fear of God in me as a 10yr old boy
Tim did the soldier point the rifle to you?

Most certainly wasn’t an honor guard that pointed his rifle at a 10 year old.

It is requested that everyone maintain an atmosphere OF SILENCE AND RESPECT AT ALL TIMES
I've always wondered why they yell. Doesn't that make it even harder for foreigners to understand? I'm a native speaker and when the woman is speaking up (0:42) it's crystal clear, but whenever the guard is yelling I haven't a clue what he said.

How come the rabbit at 0:50 didn’t get yelled at?
When I am in an elevator with other people: *"IT IS REQUESTED THAT EVERY PASSENGER SHUT UP AND BE QUIET!!!"*
It’s interesting how they act with different people. The young tourists got straight up yelled at. Yet, with older people and kids it seemed much more polite, even with a “thank-you”.
Well, kids know no better, and elder people deserve some patience. The rest have no excuse.
i feel like they only say "thank you" if you obey quickly
Idgaf if they’re polite or not, you respect and follow the rules for those who have fallen to save you.

People go and see the tomb and witness the guards but don’t really realize that it’s not a tourist thing, those men signed up to guard The Tomb 24/7/365/? Sun, rain, heat, cold, snow, thunderstorms, lightning, sleet, hail, straight line winds, tornados, nor’easters, heat waves, and throw in a hurricane or two. This is not an easy post to get. You have to want it bad, and then you might not be right for it, or it might not be right for you. You have to be one straight shooter of a soldier to earn this post. Then you have to strive to be perfect, or as close to it as possible, in order to keep it. Hats off to the guards at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers. And a hat over heart for the men buried there. Peace.

Don’t trespass, stay silent, and remain standing during the ceremony.
Draven Flores-Rios and don’t put anything on the plaza. At around 5:25 someone put their bottle on the plaza and the guards told them to remove it so it’s not on the plaza.

I remember when we visited the tomb, they request at the beginning of the changing of guards that everyone remain standing… my niece, who was probably 5-6 at the time, sat… and she got yelled at. Scared the shit out of her. One of my favorite stories to tell and that I remember.

Moral of the story don’t bring young children here
I’ve actually been there it’s a very peaceful place luckily there was no idiots there
The thing is, they have an understanding that kids will make some noise.
I only saw adults breaking the rules except for like two clips
When I was like 10 I went there for the first time. And I was a little rowdy but I never ever was loud or went I front of the chains and rails

It’s a damn shame they have to tell you this stuff
After watching and commenting I flew to DC and road the subway to Arlington Cemetery just to watch the changing of the guard! It was during a bad heat wave. Very brutal just watching. These men are awesome for doing what they do. Anyone that criticize these men don’t have the balls, courage, or heart to even deserve to live in this great Country!!!
OG WEASEL I’m quiet most of the time and I don’t fuck with guards so they don’t have to worry about me
Imagine being so self absorbed that you can't respect the dignity of the fallen. A monument to the fallen of the CSA, of Maoist China or even Nazi Germany (if presented in good faith) requires a degree of sobriety.
Zeke Bartlett Exactly! You’re so right!
Naw they’re probably just not paying attention
There needs to be signs all over with this simple message:
"There are only two rules here for visitors.
1. Stay behind the damn barrier.
2. Shut the hell up until you are out of earshot of the monument.
Failure to follow either of these rules will result in a very harsh warning at best, and a brutal ass-kicking at worst, depending on how patient the guard is feeling."
There are many signs in the Cemetery to be quiet and respectful. Everyone with a brain should understand that chains and rails are there for a reason.
I think at worst they’d get a bullet to the brain unless those rifles are just for show. (Ps: I hope they’re real)
None Of your business they are functional but I don’t think they keep them loaded. Only have a magazine maybe in times of stress.
COBRA DARKNISS nope, loaded but not charged. They used to be show rifles, but trespassers and people assaulting the guards got them equipped with live rifles and ammo. That loud “chk-chk” is not for show.
