#35 Fixing the vault, dry stone walling & clearing out the cantina - Renovating in Italy

  • With some warm spring weather, we were finally able make mortar and stabilize the crumbling vault. Our friend Laura helped us with further building a new dry stone terrace wall, and with clearing out a part of the cantina.
    We're Isis & Bertus. In the summer of 2023 we moved into a neglected farmhouse in a tiny village in the northwest of Italy. The last inhabitants left some 10 years ago, but large parts of the property have been empty for over 20 years.
    Thank you for joining us on our adventure!

    I learned later in life about nettles. Earlier in life, they were things that stung my arms as I tried to reach past them to get to the wild raspberries in Augsburg. Who knew? 🙂

    • @sharong8511
      @sharong8511 4 місяці тому +1

      I knew them only as the plants that grew by the stream in my grandparents’ garden, the ones that hurt my ankles on my way to eat some raspberries I was supposed to be picking. They grew strawberries and raspberries for sale to neighbours and locals who came every year. Ten cents per pound! I was allowed to do the weighing of the fruit and to take care of the cash box when I was six years old. They also had several trees with transparent apples. They were green with white flesh, kind of like Granny Smith’s but not exactly the same. ~ Memories of a good childhood come rushing back to me. Have a blessed day.

    Such a beautifully shot video!
    You have all really knuckled down to some heavy work this week! How lovely to have friend’s visiting who can add to the memories of building your home.
    I have lilac in my garden it is such a beautiful scent, quite mesmerising. Sadly it doesn’t last for very long, which seems to make its fleeting perfume all the more precious.
    I see all that rain you had has indeed made your grass grow at an extraordinary rate! No sooner have you completed mowing than in a day or two it needs another run over with the lawn mower!
    Love the shot of the wind blowing through the grass, such a romantic image. The sunlight catching the golden tips of the grass. The viewer is transported away from our busy world to a bye gone era where time seems to stand still. The silence is deafening, the sense of peace and tranquility palpable. ❤

      Hi John! We have another plan for the stairs - the space next to the stable and hay-loft (currently a garage) will become a entrance/hallway with space for a staircase. It's already connected to both spaces by means of bricked-up doors, so easy enough to open up again. But if we didn't have that option, your solution would be a perfect alternative!

      @@storiesfromthecascina I have been following you since you started your channel and love all of you content. Like you, my wife and I are starting a new adventure by moving to Italy on May 29th. We will be renting in Tuscany until we decide to purchase and tackle a small renovation. Thank you again for the wonderful videos and inspiration.

    Love your stone buildings! I've built dry stone walls myself and I noticed that you're building it without a gravel base. Not only does this provide good drainage but it will also prevent your wall from sagging over time. Maybe there is a solid footing if not you may encounter some issues in the future. Otherwise it does look nice.

      what we were told by a local dry-stone wall builder is to dig in the bottom layer of (big) stones as the foundation. we haven't dug them in as we will be adding soil on top of the current level later. we have backfilled with gravel and rubble to improve drainage. let's hope it works and otherwise this wall isn't too big to rebuild when neccessary. :-) we'll definitely look into it more so thank you for the advice!

    I can see myself going through all this, to get some peace and quiet only to be met with gunshots throughout the day. But that won't happen to me because you shared your lessons with us :P The stone ramp looks professional, well done!

      haha yeah 😅 it's not ideal but it's not every day and we much rather have them shoot at the clay pigeon shooting range than hunting in our backyard honestly. of the over 30 houses we've seen, there's almost always something though: an airfield, a quarry, a ralley track, high voltage pylons.

    Those doors are cool. That ribbed star like wheel? Half the height of that and it would make two bases for side tables.
