His version is still very lacking. It needs a timeline to really explain it. Sarkeesian and Wu for example did not even get involved until it had been going on for a;,pst a year and the gamers were going after the press and mostly male writers. Not women. The harassment lies started only when they jumped in and tried to make it about themselves. And the guy that coined gamergate was a republican actor who causally just called it that after he checked it out. It was the gamer are dead articles that really triggered the backlash, it was almost all against the press, not the literally whos. Devs explanation was very lacking. DEV and his both sides crap is a joke, ask him about his made up sock puppet account camera lady, dev says the BOTH SIDES line cause he does not have clean hands in some stuff he pulled at the time.
It was never about Quinn or Wu; it was about the journalists. The women were just used as shields for the bad behavior of an establishment that had lost our trust.
**Wikipedia be like:** Gamergate was a harassment campaign. It has nothing to do with corruption in games journalism. That is a red herring. [1][2][3][4] Citations: [1] Kotaku [2] Polygon [3] Ars Technica [4] Gamasutra
I can’t be the only one who remembers the video of a bunch of blue hairs bragging about essentially puppy dog guarding the Wikipedia page to keep the lie about it going on? It was one of the most pathetic things I saw from the antis and that is saying a lot.
SFO has also said that GamerGate failed but I don't agree entirely. It did fail to actually oust corruption and collusion from the industry however, it did shift public opinion tremendously AGAINST "games journalists" to such a degree that the job title is now a common insult even amongst the uninitiated. It also exposed the much larger issue of the total ideological capture of all institutional corporate media. In other words, we misunderstood our target. It wasn't games journalism that was corrupt specifically... It was the entire profession of journalism that had become corrupt. It's like killing the boss at the end of a grueling campaign, only for a second life bar to appear and as the ground crumbles away around it and the titan emerges from the earth, you realize what you just defeated was but a single zit on the asscheek of the true final boss.
I think both sides of the controversy had Pyrrhic victories. I think Anti GG earned more control over the video game industry , while Gamergate made a lot of people more critical of media. On the other hand, Anti GG ( progressives ) made the industry worse and a many of the Gamergaters ( not all ) became lolcows.
I'm in agreement. We all had pie in the sky ideas that we were gonna somehow uncorrupt these people and places just by talking about it and mocking them. We didn't know just how entrenched the rot was, and eventually the movement lost its momentum without really reforming any of the institutions. However, it did just what you said of waking many of us up to just HOW corrupt these people were.
@@sebastianmunozochoa1485 Fair assessment. A decade later and these useless leeches have begun infiltrating the Japanese industry at the development level given the emerging localization controversy with Sega.
Remember when Sargon found out about Digra? You know that Government organization researching gamers in order to find out how to influence them? Remember that?
Gamergate will always be about how one girl got caught trying to sleep her way to the top and how it shined a light on the nepotism inherent in the enthusiast press, which wound up being a microcosm of the legacy media in general.
this is my understanding as well, though I've seen some try to muddy up this explanation (by calling it harassment), meaning, they probably don't know what it is exactly, or are trying to hide the truth with a convoluted wall of text anyway, typical corruption in media as usual
I think it should be remembered as the watershed moment where internet journalism and the media at large realised how effective gaslighting and manipulation is.
@@user-og6hl6lv7pabsolutely this, it showed to me how willing they are to lie and manipulate. Watching everything happen live. It genuinely confused me as a teen. How could the media lie blatantly about what’s going on? Truly eye opening.
Zoe's label as "game developer" is exaggerated at best. She was involved on that dumb text only game and crowfunded another that was never made, basically running away with like 85k in her pocket.
The corruption of world-wide politics/virtue-signaling can also be showcased in the moment when Quinn and Sarkeesian spoke to the UN about feminism and empowering women. What a shitshow example of empowered women - they could've chosen so much better, but then that was the era when "believe all women" was the current gun-point mantra.
If you're talking about the Chuck Tingle VN she was "working on" yeah, she basically took the money and ran. Coincidentally, not a single journo bothered to follow up to report that she had done that to all the backers who expected a game. Not a bimbo going on vacation with their money.
Gamergate for me really was basically “baby’s first media scandal” like I never paid attention to or knew too much about media corruption as a kid because I wasn’t into it, but once it got into my hobby, it opened my eyes.
Quinn also scammed people out of their crowdfunding money but we aren't allowed to call her out on that. Honestly this only covers a few of her crimes. This whole thing turned into Five Nights at Zoe Quinn's. Now there's a nightmare you'll never forget! (shudders). 😆
She had stolen money and not delivered on several games and lead a digital mob that drove an ex boyfriend to self delete. The fact that she and Anita got money, jobs, fame and clout is disgusting
I'll add to this it wasn't just that crowdfunding scam she also announced her own game jam (rebel game jam) after she ruined the polaris game jam, she took donations for it, it never happened and she never refunded that money either so multiple scams. **some other group did a game jam with that name in 2022 nothing to do with her scam.
The harassment was simply not relevant. It'd be like labelling the Yankees a fanbase of rapists because some rapists are Yankee fans. A lot of the supposed harassment was also unproven/unfounded, or would turn out to be trolls playing both sides off each other. In other cases it was just fabricated, like when I believe it was Wu or Quinn claimed she was 'harassed out of her home' but was actually just taking a planned vacation. Keep in mind this was pre-MeToo, but that side of the debate was entirely "Listen and Believe," as Sarkeesian even had on a slide at a games conference one year, like something out of 1984. In another case, a proven harasser of Sarkeesian (I believe) was found by Gamergate supporters and reported, but she chose to ignore it. It was some a-hole in Argentina or something. And of course, that's ignoring all the blatant harassment against GG supporters, done in public, in the light of day, and not hidden at all. Regardless, the opponents of GG chose to focus only on the bad apples to intentionally discredit the legit claims being made, because they benefited from the corruption.
The biggest thing I remember from back then is when someone leaked a group chat with a bunch of journalists from ostensibly competing sites all explicitly agreeing to direct attention away from the "ethics in journalism" criticisms and focus solely on the harassment. They justified it to themselves in the messages by saying that dedicating any coverage to the ethics debate would likely further exacerbate the harassment, and that they had a duty to protect the women being harassed by not reporting on it. For the life of me I couldn't find screenshots of these DMs anymore, they're just gone from the internet, so obviously take this with a pinch of salt. But people who were around back then will know I'm telling the truth.
If I'm remembering correctly, wasn't that same group chat full of people who got revealed to have "boinked" Quinn? It was essentially one big fan club.
@@SockieTheSockPuppet AFAIK, only the 'five guys' were confirmed members of the industry, so not sure, but they did almost unanimously decide to aggressively jump to her defense regardless because whether she "boinked" them, she was friends with a lot of them.

He wasn't really a part of GG. Main players were Sargon of Akkad, Mundane Matt, Thuderf00t, Steve Shives, Amazing Atheist, Andy Warski, Kraut and Tea, Jeff Holiday, Internet Aristocrat (Mister Metokur), and many others. But Razor was never apart of it.
@@juliangrant9718 Uh, what are you talking about? Razor was there for it, and he was vocal. In fact he was discussing the exact same issue three or so years before GG even went down. Man was doing the "I told you so" dance as the journos burned holding a fistfull of receipts. In fact I'd dare to agree with OP, Razor SHOULD be the one presenting GG to anyone. The man is the closest thing to a neutral party you can ever get on the subject. While he was most certainly torching the journos with the verbal flamethrower, he wasn't even apart of GG himself, 'not of the movement' in his own words. And while both had the same targets and he did say he prefers the and I quote "incoherent truth" of GG over the corrupt lies of the journos, Razorfist did not spare the gamergaters a tonguelashing of their own. The man is a criticism grenade, labelled 'to whom it may concern'.
Ethics in gaming journalism. Simple as. Anybody saying otherwise is blowing smoke. Nobody really gave a crap about a woman cheating on her boyfriend. They cared about how close developers, publishers and journalists turned out to be. Friends, roommates, college dormmates/sorority/fraternity connections, siblings, spouses, none of it disclosed and then the massive coordinated response to shutdown any discussion about those connections.
"They're bullies first, and they just found a system that enables them to bully more." I think that's true of a lot of progressives, especially the louder or more aggressive ones I've come across in life. However I would say it's a bit of a chicken and egg situation, since progressive politics trains its adherents to be bullies. Some of the worst bullies I've encountered were themselves victims of bullying early on in life but did not see the irony in being an awful person to others later on down the line, because their progressive politics made it justified.
I do agree with your statement, and my reply is not meant to contradict. "Progressive" (completely ironic title they choose btw) bullies should not, and never be, pitied or forgiven for their bullying, even if most of them were potentially bullied themselves. There are many options for someone to overcome being bullied, 1. change, as maybe you were indeed smelly etc, 2. ignore, who cares what some idiot says, 3. stand up to the bully, I was bullied and after that incident I stood up to them and since then started defending people that were being bullied. Taking the route that most midwit progressives take recent is abhorrent.
I got/saw more harassment from the people supporting the Journos, Quinn, etc questionable actions than many of us that supported GG. The thing Dev forgot was the "Not my Shield" part of the campaign where Devs and Journos were using minorities as shields against taking accountability and criticism. It was very much connected to the "Gamers are Dead" articles and Zoe Quinn's involvement with people within the industry. GamerGate basically is what people like Wu and Sarkeesian leeched onto in order to gain notoriety and then used a ton of the influence they had been gaining at that time to turn the "harassment" into a crutch to bolster the changes in the industry you see today.
I was on the Escapist at the time, and I did my best to ignore the drama for several months. It sounded like just another instance of people sleeping with someone else and par for the course. I didnt see all the back and forth from the journalists' immune response to being called out. It started to make more sense why it turned into the shitshow it did once I learned about that. If only they had just shut up and not acted like corrupt fools...
that's the thing... if the Zoe Post was just ignored because a jilted Ex is gonna be a jilted Ex they could have just let it get buried and move on with their lives. Instead they drew literally all the attention of the weaponized autism of the internet to the subject.
Were there a some bad actors in Gamergate? Of course, that is unavoidable in group or movement etc. Difference is, when we (yes I was there from almost the start) found out about them, we did our best to exorcise them, and it even got to the point where those "bad actors" started their own little group called "GGRevolt" and tried to do the same things to people in Gamergate. Funny how SFO didn't mention that, though I am not surprised lol
The idea that Dev is somehow a malicious actor is so silly. Don't get me wrong I disagree with the guy on a lot, but disagreement is different from someone acting in bad faith.
@@niggardlylad2008 Not familiar with Ethan, but to expand on what I said I do find it quite silly how people will dismiss creators and the like as grifters or bad actors for no other reason then they disagree with them. It's silly.
Pretty sure there's still an Internet Aristocrat expo video bout the 5guysBurgers&Fries harlot still reuploaded floating around here on UA-cam. Stay well, my favorite weatherman.
This got so nuts that Law & Order SVU made an episode about it, and boy was it cringe. Then Anita Sarkesian and Feminist Frequency became prominent which was a big part of the major game companies becoming compromised. GG veterans started making rekt feminist content and the culture war raged on. Not much longer, Jordan Peterson got famous over the C-16 legislation in Canada.
Feminist Frequency was pretty much a proto "Sweet Baby Inc". It did the same sort of work, going around to different companies and consulting them on how to be progressive.
If you do a retrospective, you gotta get Carl Benjamin/Sargon to join. He will definitely have some thoughts and reflections on everything that happened, especially since he was deep in the thick of things on the pro Gamergate side.
Internet Aristocrat was the real hero. He provided a place for a lot of the big names to come and discuss it and a lot of people to come and listen and find out about it. Miss that guy. Honorable Mention: Adam Baldwin.
It killed gaming journalism for me. I haven’t used any of them for years. I actively avoid them all and refuse to even click on a link. I get all of my gaming news from trusted UA-camrs and have for many many years now. They did this to themselves.
i use them at work when they compile random lists of games in genres or highlight some games that have come out that i have missed. i dont bother reading, just checking the names of the games listed in the article, searching them online to see if its my thing then moving on. They have no worth outside of that
@@pferreira1983 Yeah, Anita was peddling her bullshit Tropes vs Women series and getting (very predictable) backlash from it like a year before GG kicked off.

Those two 'very different sides' are both almost completely wrong. I was there nearly at Ground Zero, when Gamergate erupted. Right after all the Borg-Like 'Gamers are Dead' articles were published. THAT got my attention immediately. I was frequenting 'The Escapist' website at the time and at the forums, a small group of us formed who thought there was something else behind just collusion with a bunch of (so-called) Journalists. We started digging, and a few guys stumbled across a Transcription of a meeting between 'Silverstring' media group, a number of Game Journalists and some academics, from students to College Professors. They were talking about how they were going to insert Cultural Marxism into the Gaming Industry. They ACTUALLY used the Phrase, 'By Hook or by Crook'. Unbelievable. They also had a side-discussion where they built up a plan for a Hit-Piece on Totalbiscuit, who had stayed out of the row, but because he was a smart guy he had made some comments that painted a few of them in an unfavorable light, and that couldn't be tolerated. So the document was wiped off the 'net in an hour and we all talked about what should we do with this thing? Some of us wanted to release it at The Escapist forums immediately, because this was a MUCH bigger deal than either of the two issues you brought up. This was a plan to turn the gaming industry into little more than a machine for pushing out propaganda. Sadly, my friends and I were the smaller group, and when we voted on what to do with it, the larger group said if we DID release it, it would make us look like Crazy Conspiracy Theorists. That line of Reasoning was just head-bangingly stupid, to NOT release hard evidence of a Conspiracy... Because you were afraid of being accused of making up a Conspiracy. Ugh. Anyway, I had to drop out of the fight because my Bank account was hacked a few hours after making some scathing comments about the head of 'Silverstring Media'. But one of the friends I had made at the Escapist, was a high-level Executive at Defy Media and he got it much, much worse. This guy is a completely brilliant lawyer and a hard-core Gamer. Initially he stuck to the background, passing us information, political/historical/etc... that he thought might help us better communicate why Cultural Marxism is SO dangerous and catastrophic for Cultures. Because that's REALLY what Gamergate *was*, the first public, opening shots fired in the Culture War we've been immersed in for nearly a decade. However, as time went on, he came more and more into the open, finally just not bothering to hide which posts he made. After roughly a week of this, he pulled me aside and said he was going to have to drop out of the debate, because HIS Boss flat-out told him that if he continued 'helping' us, He would be Fired. "We WANT Them to be Demonized", is an almost exact quote. Because his Wife is Disabled, he needed the Money, Badly. So, that was that for both of us, in terms of direct participation. Lastly, if you didn't know, ''Cultural Marxism' (Directly related to Relativism/Postmodernism, is an Ideology that insists there IS no such thing as 'Objective Truth'. Everything is a Social Construct and (according to them) there are no absolutes... except for that one- That there ARE 'No absolutes'. Personal Feelings Determine Reality. Whatever your Feelings tell you, that's your 'Truth'. In regards to how you relate to other people, you are fully capable of forcing other people to follow your 'Truth', as long as you have the Power to do so. @@mister-x2Yeah, should’ve mentioned that in my post, but between the two official sides, there was absolutely more harassment coming from the anti side, kinda like now if you do (or play) something that side doesn’t like. Hogwarts Legacy comes to mind.

Every day back then there was another fake death threat, fake grape threat and when you looked into it someone said "make me a sandwhich" when the professional victims dove into conversations they had nothing to do with. Feminist Frequently Stupid channel left one video open to comment where she lied obviously and farmed the angry responses. StupidDunceOtako is just someone who capitalized on it, nothing more. Just milked controversy for clicks and "its about ethics in game journalism" garbage. He has an opinion that changes with the weather based on what will milk more. He could care less unless he could get in on that incestuous relationship in some way. It always should have been about the takeover of every space by a small group of elites and their, mostly for free, defenders who wont buy the products but want them all changed to their new religion. Look at where it went. IN 2014 Naughty Dog was a hero, in 2015 showed Prophet Druckman's true colors. Look at Rocksteady, just died with its hair dye avengers. How much must they infect before anyone shows enough self control to just not buy the next product made by people who hate you, your culture, your country and basically your existence.
It wasn’t just the religious right who criticized gaming. It was the entire establishment media, both left and right (mostly left). You didn’t see MSNBC running segments defending gamers. Only the game journalists, of the time, defended gamers. This was why game journalists, betraying their audience, was such a shock. This was the moment when gamers realized, gaming journalism, had been infiltrated and compromised.
Bro the names have been out for a decade. Just look at anyone who used to be part of the Ralph Retort, they all doxed and harassed and one of them even got people swatted.
The argument was never about harassers. Its the internet, and some of the dankest corners of it, of course there were unkind people involved. The argument was, one side went "everyone is doing things they shouldnt, lets stop it all" while the other went "we did nothing wrong and we are going to beat you for even suggesting we did" One side went "ethics in journalism" while the other went "no bad tactics only bad targets"
"Brianna Wu" (John Walker Flynt) flip flopping once again is no surprise nor is it showing any kind of growth. There was a lot of flip flopping to get to the Brianna personality in the first place.
When viewing GG there were some harassing tolls but mostly it was caring about ethics in journalism. I happened to agree because of some evidence like game journos pros where different journalists from different outlets which should be competition amongst each other wound up co-collaborating with each other. This did destroy any chance of honest journalism amongst them.
and equally as important to always mention , most of the proclaimed harassment the sjws get is from themselves using alt accounts to astrotuf their victim narrative as a tactic in the culture war , this has been proven countless times and they are the scum of the earth and should be wholly disregarded..... except for the ones in corporate media of course , those ones are traitors and must be tried as such.......
From my POV, GG was the first time that fans had just as much ability to get their side of things out as the press did. Yes, Kotaku was a big site but nothing stopped the pro GG side of things being able to get their side out in just as big a way. For every journalist tweet, pro GG folks could do just as many tweets, if not more so. Journalists couldn't control what people read, couldn't control what people watched. And it wasn't hard to poke tunnels into the anti GG side of things.
Dev made videos during Gamergate and he's the reason the Fez awards scandal was exposed. He's literally part of the reason Phil Fish quit video games. It is you who has no idea.

That was the only side. The "harassment" part is overstated by journos. What they would do is take a single instance of someone tagging Anita or whoever, and then attributed that to everyone who used the hashtag.
Zoey Quinns situation was the Fire. Kane and Lynch was the Primordial Soup. The original argument around "Gamergate" was the credibility of video game reviewers. Zoey Quinn being caught solidified what alot of gamers had feared: game reviews can be bought. And the reason why I consider Kane and Lynch the true spark of this whole ordeal, is because when Edios made threats to Gamespot to fire Jeff Gerstmann, who gave an honest review of the game, and by pulling its funding for the Gamespot website, it planted the seeds of doubt in gamers minds that they could be lied to. Now they dont have to lie, they are now allowed to just straight up say what they think about the people who they expect to pay for their projects. Zoey Quinn is indeed an example of how not to get ahead and got rightfully caught. Now we turn our gaze at the companies who allow such tactics and the individuals who try to change the term of "Gamergate" as an attack, when in reality, the consumer NEEDS to question the decisions of the people who are now currently in charge of well loved franchises.
The real trolls, the ones causing all the harassment were people like Teridax who offered to pay others to harass people like Zoe Quinn and Anita Sarkeesian, they just happened to be whitelisted on the notorious gamergate block list managed by Randi Harper, person who continually claimed GG was harassing her, also a person who told people to drink bleach and definitely wasn't so innocent. Basically every single troll and grifter on the internet was attracted to this stupid drama, media does what media does and paints everything as toxic masculinity running wild. The people who did actually care about games journalism got lumped in and soon found that was a lost cause as we've seen since. Also the reason why the wiki page will never paint an accurate accounting of this was because an editors that went by Ryulong was being paid by people on a subreddit called gamerghazi to basically camp that article 24/7 using sourced articles by people directly involved in the controversy to carefully craft that article, they were eventually banned from Wikipedia once this was exposed yet it mostly remains a biased mess not that matter because again the whole thing was fn stupid.
Majority of the harassment in GG came from the anti side, even journalists themselves, and bad faith actors attempted stirring pots in order to garner clout (like Brianna Wu). Yes, there was harassment (as usually happens when you have people bickering at each other). It just wasn't one sided, and it was the side making the accusations that was most guilty of it.
It was not really about journalistic integrity, that was only the catalyst. It was about being the first ones to see these Woke™ activists starting to meddle in gaming spaces. A lot of the beligerents on both sides came from the atheist/skeptic community where just a couple years earlier they had come in and fractured _that_ group. Which never recovered, btw. It was the beginning of the divorce between class war leftists and culture war liberals. Two groups that never should've been forced into the same tent to begin with.
Here's the thing - was she actually harassed, or merely criticized? Even if she was harassed, what % of comments were said harassment and what portion of those were real, unique accounts vs trolls or bots?
Someone reported on an incident, it went viral, then they claimed harrasment because of the virality brought a lot of attention all of a sudden. Like anything that goes viral in the social media age, this was just the early days of modern social media. But the liars wont recognize that fact.
Escapist put out an article on GG back in 2019. The editor it seems lost his job over it because Quinn complained she wasn't consulted about the article.
Probably.... GG for the most part was a disorganized mob of unspecified people. Great to turn into a boogey man. All the major figures seem to have sidelined themselves or turned into wrecks of their own since the only thing that really marked them was standing against the media opinion or being in stark disagreement with some anti-GG figure

I would say that Gamer Gate started with, do you kids remember back in the day when Game Spot had massive banners for Kane and Lynch 1 and then the review dropped? No? Well that is where it all started.
I was really into what Total Biscuit talk about Game Journalism when it came to review games like Shadows of Mordor when the got alot of free stuff and exclusive deals and how it was corrupting the gaming market. Yet nothing changed since GG and the ideological rot is deeper than ever. Japan our last bastion of hope isn't even safe. They'll just naw at them until they sway. Get physical copies fellow gamers,go retro. I feel it's going to take another game crash like in the 70s to right the wrongs. Hopefully live service games cause it but I doubt it.
You cant say nothing has changed. When this started, people were genuinely in favor of the ideological rot and believed that video games needed to change to be accepted as an art form. Remember that was the push before the corruption was discovered. All of these outlets pretending that the subject they covered needed to "mature" to be worthy of their coverage and they had a prescription on how to induce this maturity, specifically remove and replace the audience that was established in its totality. Gamers were dead... A decade later and that concept is completely forgotten and the people pushing it exposed as grifters, conmen, or cultists. No one believes the changes introduced were for the better and the industry is shedding these charlatans in real time as it collapses under the weight of its own bloat.
She better not tell her husband... On a more serious note, I noticed this keeps happening, the left does something and history will blame the right. I was involved in GG back in the day. A proud member of the "Not Your Shield" group. Dev does a decent explanation of the thing but he puts the harassment on the same level as the developers and journalists melting down. There was very little harassment at all and even 2 events where the ones claiming harassment were caught using fake accounts to harass themselves. The few incidents of harassment were from unknown accounts and went dark when everything settled down. No harassment reports were made nor any threats of violence reported to the police. On the other hand, the number of journalists spanned from not just game journalists but full blown legit news agencies including people who were part of the New York Times and Wall Street Journal (the later would try and do a weak attempt at interviewing both sides). I mean it was widespread and made the national news. People were even trying to attribute it to Trump's Presidential victory for gods sake.
One of the weirdest moments of my life was opening my laptop and calling my friend asking why a girl I made out with in high school was in the news, going by a made up name, and why everyone was mad at her.
Lets stop trying to be polite about what GG was: It was a recognition of cultural Marxism making it's way into gaming entertainment and people calling it out. The reason it was so blatant is because games were ignored until the industry was profitable, then the Marxists tried to rapidly push it. They pushed too hard too fast and everyone called them out on it. The wider Marxists like John Stewart had to try and save face because GG had real momentum behind it. Saying it was about "journalistic integrity" was the conservatives trying to present the problem in a "socially-acceptable" way, and saying it was about "sexism" was the standard tried-and-true defense by the cultural Marxists. In the near decade since, GG has been proven correct: Cultural Marxism has destroyed gaming, and most other entertainment, to the point that "normies" are cancelling streaming subscriptions, and abandoning hobbies that have been too tainted to be enjoyable anymore.
hahaha DEV mentioned a scene from MITCHELL AND WEBB!!! When he said.. "ARE WE THE BAD GUYS" Its a show here in the UK... very funny.. pretty old now.. but it was CLEAR that none of the rest of the panel had ever heard of it!!!!
I never heard of or even knew really what "Gamergate" was until years after the fact. I and the family didn't have much internet access back in 2014 and had other real-world problems to worry about than this BS at the time. And pretty much another year or so after. 😒
I was there on day one. Just to clarify, the five guys weren't all games journalists but they were involved with the gaming industry in one way or another. One in particular - Nathan Grayson, the games journalist in this list, gave ZQ positive press in Kotaku and RPS.
Honestly anything covering drama and people of that sort go to encyclopedia dramatica you will get the truth and the least in a hilarious way. Not biased like Wikipedia tries to scrub it clean as
Oh man, there were a LOT of things about Gamergate that got lost under the "It's all a harassment campaign!" pushback. And plenty of preceding events. Anita Sarkeesian's "Tropes vs Women in Video Games" series that started in March 2013, and the eventual leaked video where she says flat out she doesn't play video games. Atheism+ to a lesser degree in September 2012, which was preceded by "Elevatorgate" and everything that came after that. The block bots on Twitter. The Fine Young Capitalists attempt to have a women's game devs conference that was allegedly sabotaged by Quinn, merely because she was having such a conference of her own. "Gamers are dead" is the big one and the event that basically confirmed what everyone had been alleging before the Gamergate hashtag took off: there was a massive amount of collusion and cartelizing in the games industry, not just the journalism side, and that the gaming publications basically were acting as PR departments of the game publishers in every way but name. The hacked leaks from the GameJournosPros mailing lists (or whatever that was called) further confirmed all those allegations in such stark detail that it was glorious to see unfold. (I think that was the detail you were trying to recall, SFO.) But somehow... it was all just a giant harassment campaign against a few women. They ignored the games journalism aspect of it to focus on the bad actors doing the online harassment. And since the media largely controlled the narrative and tried to play damage control, that's what we got left with.
The last bastion of gamers is the Map game/4x strategy community. Games journalists and women don’t care about history games. So they have no idea of the community surrounding it.
I did not know the first thing about gamergate until at least 5 years later when someone was finally able to clarify the corruption in journalism angle. I was aware of Sarkeesian and her push of proto-wokism, but treated that as its own issue. I think ideology started infiltrating gaming sooner than most people think. I believe the turning point was around 2012, before that games were made for gamers. But with titles released after 2012 you could see sings of trying to appease social justice ideals.
Incidentally 2012 was also the year that the "doritosgate" controversy occurred. In quick summary; a writer named Robert Florence wrote an article for Eurogamer criticising the lack of journalistic ethics amongst his industry colleagues, where he gave named examples and evidence of journalists accepting gifts from publishers (free Playstation 3 consoles in this case) in exchange for their positive social media engagement. He also called out Geoff Keighley's advertising of Halo 4 alongside a bunch of Mountain Dew and Doritos products (hence "doritosgate"). In response to this, one of the journalists named in the article threated Eurogamer with a libel suit, causing Eurogamer to withdraw the article and then reuploaded a censored version with all of the names removed. Robert Florence quit Eurogamer after that. The article was called "Lost Humanity 18: A Table of Doritos". You can still find it if you care to read it, even the uncensored version is floating around out there in various archived forms. Before that the big one was "driv3rgate". Games journalism has always been corrupt.
I came to the internet a few years after gamergate and have only ever heard references to it. It was kinda like how the clone wars were mentioned in A New Hope.
People on the pro-GG side who shown up towards the end will say it was about ethics in games journalism (about the stupidest oxymoron ever uttered). People on the anti-GG side will say it was a harassment campaign against women. People who were actually there will say it was a campaign to fight against censorship. The entire debacle kicked off because a slag named Zoey filed a false copywrite claim against a UA-camr named Mundane Matt for making a video about her ex-boyfriend's blog explaining the details all of her cheating. It all got out of hand because Zoey used her connections in the games industry to do an organized attack against the entire gaming community in retaliation proclaiming that "gamers are dead". People like Total Biscuit and Brianna Wu were parasites who shown up long after the fact to beg for donations and give their useless opinions after the people who were originally at the center of the controversy had long left.
I think the only thing more surprising than Brianna Wu reaching self-awareness was Matt Jarbo taking a full 180 turn on his view, after riding the wave of Gamergate to build his platform. Dude was so into it, he kept talking about well after all the major players had moved on.
What I find most funny is the rough parallels with this and World War One exactly a century prior. Someone does a funni for entirely personal reasons and ends up unwittingly igniting a powder keg, the repercussions of which are still haunting us all to this day.
In journalism reporting on something that you're personally involved is considered "incestuous" and that's essentially what these journalists did. Perfect example of "we investigated ourselves and found no wrongdoing."
That talk about "bullies followed us to our hobbies" talk reminds me of a philosophy I'm workshopping. I'm just being careful not to be the next Marx with it.
Only hacks who want to cover up their own misdeeds still blame something which gamers stopped caring about almost a decade ago shortly after it was even a thing to begin with.
There is a whole generation along with entire groups of people who need to watch and listen to this video. They are the ones who constantly play the victim in order to avoid responsibility and get what they want.
Dev is Canadian which already explains some of the reasons why he'll "half defend" Zoe, Brianna, & even Anita & most of the slimey "game journalist" (even though those women commited theft at the expense of the gaming industry). They all got their education near the same place. Game dev jobs in Canada are a money pit nightmare now because of those women & the Metoo movement. 5guysBurgers&Fries Harlot never forget!
Did Dev explain GamerGate well? If not, what did he miss? *edit* MAJOR props to him for attempting to explain this off the cuff and quickly.
Didn't bring up the harassment from the anti gamergate side and only blamed the Hamergate side for harassment. He is biased.
I missed a lot, actually! this was quite off the cuff, but is ok
Try to get @mistermetokur on to talk about it. He had ALL the details and angles. Dev....soft steps at times.
@@RampageRich It's not bias it's just that he's trying to retell a year+ long event from a decade ago with 0 preparation.
It was never about Quinn or Wu; it was about the journalists. The women were just used as shields for the bad behavior of an establishment that had lost our trust.

Gamergate will always be about how one girl got caught trying to sleep her way to the top and how it shined a light on the nepotism inherent in the enthusiast press, which wound up being a microcosm of the legacy media in general.
this is my understanding as well, though I've seen some try to muddy up this explanation (by calling it harassment), meaning, they probably don't know what it is exactly, or are trying to hide the truth with a convoluted wall of text
anyway, typical corruption in media as usual
Remember when the JOURNO LISTS were discovered and leaked and it showed that the press did in fact COLLUDE with each other
She didn't try to sleep her way to the top, she tried to sleep her way out of a trailer park and others dediced to pushed her to the top.

The JOURNOLIST yep, then they got caught doing it a few times more.

"They're bullies first, and they just found a system that enables them to bully more."
I think that's true of a lot of progressives, especially the louder or more aggressive ones I've come across in life.

SFO is a fence sitting cuck. He does the whole "both sides where bad" talk, even when there are clear evidence one side was clearly doing more harm.
No it was mostly left.
Everything Dev said is BS. Tell him to submit names if there were harasses.

The argument was never about harassers. Its the internet, and some of the dankest corners of it, of course there were unkind people involved.
The argument was, one side went "everyone is doing things they shouldnt, lets stop it all" while the other went "we did nothing wrong and we are going to beat you for even suggesting we did"
One side went "ethics in journalism" while the other went "no bad tactics only bad targets"
Dev was the guy inventing fake sock people to support his arguments. Remember CAMERA LADY
"Brianna Wu" (John Walker Flynt) flip flopping once again is no surprise nor is it showing any kind of growth. There was a lot of flip flopping to get to the Brianna personality in the first place.
Really slumming it with SFO.
Ahem: Gamergate was about ethics in gaming journalism
From my POV, GG was the first time that fans had just as much ability to get their side of things out as the press did. Yes, Kotaku was a big site but nothing stopped the pro GG side of things being able to get their side out in just as big a way. For every journalist tweet, pro GG folks could do just as many tweets, if not more so. Journalists couldn't control what people read, couldn't control what people watched. And it wasn't hard to poke tunnels into the anti GG side of things.
They had to go to congress lol
Imagine “patching things up” with Brianna Wu...

Justice for Alec!
My first real awareness of 'Gamegate' was the spate of "gamers are dead" articles all the legacy outlets released
SFO did miss out on how Anita Darkeesian flared the fires up more but he nail it for the most part.
She who's name shall not be spoken. May she be resigned to the deepest pits of torment and obscurity.
Brianna Wu was just a troll looking for attention.
"brianna wu"

You know if they really want to know they could have talked to Mistor Metokur he pretty much started to ask the questions that kinda sparked it.
Zoe , should be in a Canadian Jail. She harassed her ex, to the point of..... you know.
Mostly critiqued, but there was some harassment too.

14:30 I didn't realize Tipper Gore, and Joe Lieberman were religious right.
She better not tell her husband...
On a more serious note, I noticed this keeps happening, the left does something and history will blame the right. Happened to Tipper Gore, the civil rights movement, the KKK,, and if you look into Jack Thompson, I believe he sued the Republican Party twice, so I doubt he's on the right at all.
The left will will never be defeated unless it's propaganda machine is dealt with.
They were just as bad, if not worse.
@@ProxyDoug She married Al Gore in 1970, believe it or not, back then political affiliation wasn't a dealbreaker for most people in relationships, if you don't believe me go watch any interview or hearing involving her advocating for censorship in the 1980s, every bit of her activism back then appealed to traditionalism (Think of the children!!!), it wasn't until the mid-late 90s that she began doing the whole climate crap, which was more in support of her husband's initiatives, and in the mid 20-teens she started doing alphabet mafia crap.
Jack Thompson held grudges against a whole host of individuals, doing a bunch of frivolous lawsuits. The first one against a republican was when he was at war with N.W.A. because a member of the group was put in some executive position while being a doner, the second time was racketeering claims against some other republican politician. @@patterofheads256 You may have a point about Jack Thompson, but maybe you're the one who need to rewatch some interviews if you think Tipper Gore wasn't on the left. You can even see her playing the same cards the left plays today with the difference that instead of doing it from a feminist foundation, she doing it from a decency one, which is at it's core, using morality as the basis for censorship.
@ProxyDoug Sanctity and family values are not moral foundations of the left. She did not make Care/Harm or Liberty/Oppression arguments.
Why does Melanie at times look like a 3D rendering of herself? Is it the new doo or the her lighting?

(I think that was the detail you were trying to recall, SFO.)
But somehow... it was all just a giant harassment campaign against a few women.

YWNBAW btw.
I was complaining about it back in 2009 well before GG was a thing.
PSA Sitch did a great summary video of Gamergate.
Why does Melanie Mac act like an anime NPC? When she's not talking, her idle cycle is hilarious.
What value does she add?
You really need to ask that question ? What value, the oldest media sales strategy in the book.
I think the only thing more surprising than Brianna Wu reaching self-awareness was Matt Jarbo taking a full 180 turn on his view, after riding the wave of Gamergate to build his platform. Dude was so into it, he kept talking about well after all the major players had moved on.
Get metokur on.

Sitch has the perfect video for people who don't know what it was .
