Awesome video, I know you are doing this video in the name of "science" but man..... it's an Arken. Just got mine and I was crying every single time that scope hit the ground. Lol
ive been waiting on this very video! i already know i’m buying a arken scope and have been waiting over a month hoping for eric and chad to do this! thanks guys.
Can you just beat an arken on the side of a table? And leave it in water. I almost feel like the initial shift from your test might of been the mount bending?
Right? I can't keep a zero on my air rifle for a week. My Remington 700? I zeroed it 12 years ago at 100 yards. 3 clicks up in the winter. 3 clicks down in the spring...
Took a more than 100 yard tumble down a snowy mountainside in Maine a couple of decades ago, protected my rife more than myself, my old bushnell. 3-9 held zero 😀
Another question. A new scope did not fail the water test, which is different than the experience of Back Fire. However, which drop would have made it leak? Was it the concrete? the pea gravel road? The straight drop from the stand? Was it the cumulation of free falling unabsorbable impacts? Most times a rifle slides of the edge where you propped it, it is not landing on a hard surface?
Backfire had the same issue with a Arken sh2 4-16x50 that he purchased for a scope test. He didn't do any torture testing, just put them him his swimming pool and it had water after the fact. I can't wait to see what is the issue with the water leakage, and how they will fix it. For the price the optic is top notch.
Back in my day... We just put scopes on our 50 BMG 25lb Field Rifles.. See how many rounds it took to break. I still remember when Tasco released their first 50 BMG proof Scope. It was a quarter of the price of a MK4 Leupold . It broke in about 110 rounds
I wasn't joking about testing them on a magnum spring air rifle. They're notorious scope crushers. Even non magnum springers are extremely hard in them. Do 100 shot test with the springer. I've seen many scopes, "GOOD Scopes", not make it 20 shots.
Good real life crappy situations. I’d like to see other optics go through the same scenarios to see how they hold up. Nice to see to how the company took the optic to check what went wrong to resolve the issue
That's funny I've personally left my rifle laying on the bed of my side-by-side with a very nice thermal on it while night hunting... We were going to another property and when I got there my buddy pulled up a few mins later and I was asking what took so long and he held up my rifle... he said he seen it go kart wheeling down a gravel road. Luckily for me the thermal was a tank and my rifle made it to. So when I see people torture testing optics and people in the comments saying that will never happen I've either had these things happen or seen them happen in person.... I'm really loving this optic and will be picking up one soon!!!
I had a rifle fall out of a deer stand pointing straight up at me. Luckily, it didn’t discharge on impact and I am still here to talk about it. The Tasco scope didn’t survive the fall, however. Stuff happens! The asphalt drop bent the scope mount. At least that’s my take on it.
Id like to see iv8888 do the swampfox too, there are several torture tests of them on here that are ridiculous. I got one for coyote hunting and have been really rough on it (after a few oopsies I got nasty on purpose just to see) I've since then bought 3 more lpvos and a 4-16, I really like them at the price they come in at.
I also have seen the review with Backfire. Granted, people do not have to shoot from a swimming pool but you could drop a rifle in a stream or river or fall in on a soft bank and the Arken does take on water. So, for the quip down below about swimming with the rifle, no. But you could have an incident where it falls in water by accident. A more real world test would be rain or setting under a lawn sprinkler.
Joe and the boys and girls at Arken are sure doing their P.R. work here lately, as I`m seeing Arken scopes on a lot of You Tube channels these days. nothing wrong with that, now is there? This is, no doubt a dramatic text of a rifle scope, but I`m thinking that I`d like to buy a set of those scope mounts/rings for my rifle too!
Also keep noted that your testing the mount or rings as well, maybe even more than the optic. You can have a heavy duty scope, but if the rings loosen, your POI will shift significantly. And your thinking its the scope the whole time.
A small suggestion, next time, maybe leave the scope in the water for a few minutes. In real life, if you were boating into a hunting spot and your rifle went overboard, I figure it’d take at least a couple minutes to find it and fish it out. Just a thought.
imo it survived. overall we want it to work but also be light and compact. It is possible to make it out of a 9 lb block of steel that will be impervious to everything but at what cost? again, imo if a scope can survive 1 or 2 falls w/out losing zero it's passed. and if you're the type to drop it 5 times a day then get iron sights...and bring needle nose pliers and a mallet to straighten em out b/c those will bend too.
One more comment, if you could test more scopes, that is quite a budget. Is it a matter of price? Will a Schmidt and Bender or a Swarovsky hold up to all the drops and the water test?
Frankly, I’m more worried about how this scope (or any other scope you test) will stand up to the SCAR's notorious tendency to give scopes a serious beat down over the long haul because of upper receiver harmonics. Great video. However I would run a test with multiple similar but slightly different drops such that more chances are given for something to go wrong. It's a good optic, but I think you guys could have gone further with the abuse.
