  • A fairly detailed look at how we converted our Camper to a true off grid van. Special guest appearance from Sincliar, bumped into one another on the Isle of Skye, great seeing him in his element teaching tourists about Bonny Scotland.

    The van is looking good, some well thought out modifications. I agree with you on the layout, I built my Transit to have side to rear walk through. You're right about the transverse bed layout too, I've gone that route as my van is short wheelbase, I'm 5 10 so hope I can manage. I didn't go for swivel seats, instead I fitted a L/H drivers seat and base and fitted 2 x 110ah batteries under the passenger seat, losing living space but saving storage space at the back. When you build or decide on a particular layout there's always compromise, where you compromise is down to what works for you I guess. As for the actual appearance of the Transit, I actually like it, mines a mk7 but basically the same as yours apart from the front grill and slightly different dash layout. I like the fact you have an oven, sadly I don't, again mainly down to having a SWB van. Ideally I'll fit a diesel heater and call it done but maybe a self build is never really finished :-)
    Keep enjoying your van, safe travels.

    • @savedpurplecat
      @savedpurplecat  5 років тому

      Great comments thanks for watching, the great thing about having the Transit for me is the low cost for parts, must admit the looks are growing on me lol. The Chinese diesel heaters are cheap as chips and run really well, plug and play to install. How is your engine? is it reliable?

    • @Flexaret
      @Flexaret 5 років тому

      @@savedpurplecat I'd certainly go for a Chinese diesel heater myself, is your plumbed (diesel) into the vans diesel tank?
      I've only had my van since end of July last year and then started converting it, everything from fitting windows to building the units so haven't put ,many miles on yet. I did have one fault though, the engine management light came on (amber not red) and the van went into limp mode, basically wouldn't go above 50mph. I used a cheap Bluetooth OBD2 code reader and loaded the app 'torque lite' onto my phone (Android) which gave me the fault code and that basically pointed me in the right direction, turned out to be a £16 temperature sensor fitted to the hose that comes out of the intercooler. Highly recommend you get one of the bluetooth readers and install 'Torque' the free version will work, if you accidently cause an engine fault code (MOT fail) which is easily done by dislodging a sensor lead in the engine bay you can reset it yourself, saves paying a garage to do it. Also suggest keeping an eye or even registering on the Transit Forum, some useful information but be aware of fools with a little knowledge and drama queens if you know what I mean. Out of curiosity, what body is your van? Medium Wheelbase or long, mid roof or high and front wheel drive or RWD? mine is SWB Mid Roof FWD.

    • @savedpurplecat
      @savedpurplecat  5 років тому

      @@Flexaret High top LWB rear wheel drive, thanks for info on blue tooth reader, will look into that. The engine on mine is a proper good engine but I get the feeling it will take me a while to get into running perfectly. I used a plastic petrol container for diesel (needs hole drilling in the cap though) works really well and very simple to install, plug and play apart from drilling the main hole through the floor for exhaust. If you need any advice on that give me a shout.

    • @Flexaret
      @Flexaret 5 років тому

      @@savedpurplecat I thought it looked like a RWD engine layout in the video so you have a lot more space (length) than I have although not much difference in headroom as yours is RWD, surprisingly a mid roof FWD and High roof RWD are about the same internally.
      Your engine is as far as I know an earlier one than mine but that's actually a bonus, probably less electronics and no DPF. The advice I had from a guy who has had quite a few Transits as work vans was regular oil changes, at about the half the recommended intervals using quality oil and a genuine Ford filter.
      I'll definitely give you a shout once I get a diesel heater, could be after the summer though. The plan is Skye then the Outer Hebrides to begin with. When you were camped up at the Causeway you were about 25 miles from where I am :-)

    • @savedpurplecat
      @savedpurplecat  5 років тому

      @@Flexaret Wow its a small world heh! You will love Skye in a camper, the beaches on Harris on a good day are absolutely stunning. I have a mechanic in Stoke that is as cheap as chips, he has a whole spare engine that he can get bits off for the van, so that works out well, but I have had to do four or five niggling things to the engine to get it running right, still needs a bit of work on brakes and maybe clutch.
