I loved this book so much. It's a new all time favorite of mine. What are your thoughts on this book?
Goodreads description of the book: Cyril Avery is not a real Avery or at least that’s what his adoptive parents tell him. And he never will be. But if he isn’t a real Avery, then who is he? Born out of wedlock to a teenage girl cast out from her rural Irish community and adopted by a well-to-do if eccentric Dublin couple via the intervention of a hunchbacked Redemptorist nun, Cyril is adrift in the world, anchored only tenuously by his heartfelt friendship with the infinitely more glamourous and dangerous Julian Woodbead. At the mercy of fortune and coincidence, he will spend a lifetime coming to know himself and where he came from - and over his three score years and ten, will struggle to discover an identity, a home, a country and much more. In this, Boyne's most transcendent work to date, we are shown the story of Ireland from the 1940s to today through the eyes of one ordinary man. The Heart's Invisible Furies is a novel to make you laugh and cry while reminding us all of the redemptive power of the human spirit.

Honestly, I never judged Cyril's decisions. He just reminded me of that quote of “Why do you deny yourself heaven?” because that's what he did at certain points. Some people talk about the wedding but Alice, in my opinion, didn't love him like that and she knew it (she lusted over other man in front of Cyril's eyes and basically forced him to be with her when he clearly didn't feel comfortable at first and clearly didn't want to). Of course what he did was wrong, but it was from a place of fear. Cyril had been afraid of himself since he was a child and I understood how he wanted Julian to “save” him because if Julian loved him as he said he did, he would have stopped the wedding. He would have known that Alice would never be happy with Cyril and it's kind of amazing how Cyril went from being scared to take control of his own life.
totally agree! I never judged Cyril either I was just surprised that he chose the wedding day to do that and I just thought it was kind of fucked up to do that to Alice but at the same time I totally understand why and I don't judge him either.
pro tip: you can watch movies on flixzone. I've been using it for watching all kinds of movies these days.
@Jayson Ares Definitely, been watching on Flixzone for since november myself :D
Totally disagree. He had 18 MONTHS to break things off with her. He didn’t have to wait until after they were legally married. The fact that he just took off and seemed to have barely thought of her for years after shows how truly selfish he was.Just because he’s fat dues not give him a free pass to be shitty to people.
This was my favorite book I've read this year so far. It was amazing. I'm going to seek out other John Boyne books. It gave me such a hangover because I couldn't stop thinking about it. I literally cried when that one person died. (you know who I mean.) OMG!
Cyril - 'cir al'.
I love love all your videos!!! I read this book because of you and I am so glad I did! Thank you so much for doing this video! This book will also stay with me for a very long time!!!
omg thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed it too! :)
Hi Gabby. Great review. I was curious how younger people felt about this book. I loved it and gave it 5 stars as well. At times I thought 4 but it was just because some of Cyril's decisions drove me crazy (going through with the wedding and then walking out on her - Ugh!) . Anyways, loved your review and enthusiasm. I just purchased The Boy in the Striped Pajamas written by this author and hope I enjoy as much as this book. Take care. Connie
that's so awesome! I agree Cyril was frustrating at times, but I feel like it made him even more complex of a character. It made him more real to me, because people make mistakes ya know? haha that's so great! I hope you enjoy it! :)
He gave a priest a heart attack!?
lmao yes why are you watching the spoilery section?????
gabbyreads in the wise words of Number 2 from Austin Powers “I like to live dangerously”
I watched the spoiler half of this video because I was super curious what happens, even though I really want to read it, and now I'm sad.
you should still read it!!! it's such a great book
this book made me wish i was there to hug cyril when he was still figuring things out huhu.
Thank u, i needed this for closure 💘
Starting this book today :-)
my only issue with this book is that, i kinda wish we got to see more of julian and cyril's adventures as teenagers/kids. also, more bastiaan and cyrils moment to really get fckin emotional. but loved it all the same. the meeting w the parents of bastiaan was so memorable. luvd the scenery. beautiful amsterdam and that bastiaan is the one.
NOT THE PRONUNCIATION OF CYRIL OMG
U didnt include explaining maude huhu. she was one of my fav characters, idk why.
i need yo read this gabby thank you id been thing about it now i will.😁
i hope you enjoy it too! :)
I loved the book and your review was interesting. Beware of making sweeping statements that priests molested boys not all priests did that. Finally the ‘ y’ in Cyril sounds an ‘I’ as in ‘drill’
It's See-rul!!! Not Sigh-rul
i pronounced it "Sir-ul" tbh
