Gustav Flaubert is one of the greatest novelists of all time. Oh, and Luis Jourdan a truly charismatic, most handsome, astonishing actor. Alas, these are the riches of this classic movie 🎬
That's very accurate for Emma as a character. From plot perspective, she recieved very good education for a girl of her social status, so she knows how to dance, so learning new one is going to be very easy for her. From symbolic perspective, it shows who Emma is as character. She tries to resist temptations, to keep up with her image of proper lady of society, but as soon as she gives up on them, to pursue her romantic visions, she feels confident and liberated in them
There is a waltz ballet scene 34 minutes into The Band Wagon movie danced by Cyd Cherisse. The music is an arrangement of a motif from the Madame Bovary Waltz.
@@CeeLiberty It did happen. Once the room had become too hot and stuffy, a servant was ordered to smash one of the windows (not all). The scene is described in the novel.
The thing is that when you have a partner who knows how to dance they can move and glide you to the way you are suppost to. And example is when the gentleman dirrects Madam with his hand to go around his head and spin around once. But I also know that your comment is just for fun and there all great dancers really 😆
Miklos Rosza is obviously indebted to Ravel’s “La Valse” for the slightly sour, delirious decadence in the music for this scene, unlike anything you might have heard in an actual ballroom of the period. It works wonderfully.
I think she's fantasizing/dreaming this whole sequence--waltzing like a pro after protesting her inability; being totally dazzled by the handsome partner; the breaking of the windows--all illusory, never actually happened, she's fantasizing a kind of fairy-tale romance that doesn't exist in the real world but which is only TOO real to her, the quandary of her whole married-life.
Very erotic waltz scene executed beautifully by director Vincent Minelli in a continuous shot difficult to execute. When they break the windows this adds to the sensuality of the dancing.

Literally or figuratively? Literally, because he wants to get her more air after Emma says she is going to faint. Figuratively, it is moment of high drama, where she will smash all conventions and lives to fulfill her romantic dream. Before this, we see Emma surrounded by suitors, as she looks in a mirror to see her idealized view of herself. This is what she has dreamed of - and she goes on to ruin all around her to achieve.
Windows Then Didn’t Open In Big Estates Like That Back Then. As You Could Imagine It Was Very Hot In The Ballroom, So Breaking Windows Was Very Common. Actually This Is Why Windows Open🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
God I would die for that dress, it’s beautifully stunning
This is a brilliant scene and the orchestral score is flawless. One of the cinema greats.
What a pristine immaculate print. If all b & w looked this good, I would be strongly tempted to swear off technicolor
B&W is for real filmmakers Colour is for the masses.
Music is OUTSTANDING! I love concert waltzes.
The world needs more fabulous concert waltzes like this! CHEERS! This video has the best sound quality.

Nice to have money!
Window breaking follows the music! hahaha
@@juddy1414 But not cinematic!
She doesn't waltz, but yet she knows exactly what to do, and she waltz like a trained professional.
Makes perfect sense. 😅
Yeah, cos the waltz is dead easy and can be picked up in seconds! lol

Because he's a commanding man who takes control which forces her to follow his lead.
To be fair, she said she doesn't waltz. Never said she couldn't
yes !
Jennifer Jones still is and will be the perfect Madame Bovary to me: sensitive and sensual forever !!!!!!
I totally agree!!!
yes she was a fantastic Madame Bovary, although she was american !
How beautiful Jennifer Jones is how beautifully she dances never realized how doll like and expressionless Louis Jordan could look!👍
Jennifer Jones is one of the most underrated actresses of the Golden Age of Hollywood!

“Oh no, I don’t waltz...” immediately waltzes elaborately in unison with all other dancers.
AHHH THAT WAS SO ROMANTIC UP UNTIL THE LAST 45 seconds
Servants smashing the windows
Everyone continuing to dance: 😃
I believe that was only in her head
@@CeeLiberty I don't, I can imagine they could do this very easily, are not the servants supposed to do what they are told ?

Wonderful movie with Jennifer Jones, from the novel of Flaubert.
Amazing Miklós Rózsa score.
Madame: I don't waltz
Also Madame: *waltzes*

Tahira, well recognized! Exactly. And these two "decadent", superbly energized waltzes are 2 of my favorites.
Maybe. But this is a zillion times more melodic and wondrous than La Valse. It is a typical melodious concert waltz.

It was a smashingly gallant gesture...my lady is faint?? my lady needs air?? smash the thousand dollar a piece windows, nothings too good for her!!!
of course it was an empty gesture made to impress...he was kindov a jerk, after all.
Because they didn’t know how to open them and risk management was off that day.

Is this what was known as 'being swept off your feet'? I understand it now!! *wink*xx We should bring back waltzing, and hide the cell phones perhaps?
