- Elegance, anxiety and love in Natasha's first waltz at the Moscow ball with her adoring prince Andre. "Don't you just love dancing?" she (Audrey Hepburn) asks him afterward, and steals his heart away in the love story of Tolstoy's classic "War and Peace."
She is beautiful but she could not show all the storm of feelings of a young naive girl first at the ball with all her hopes and fears. Read Tolstoy and watch Russian version of this scene
The Russian version is a masterpiece!
I need the link to the russian version please!!!!!!

One word for Audrey Hepburn---ethereal.Her presence transcends the medium of film ! She's one of the light-bearing immortals--she enlightened us all
She is really good, but she didn’t understand anything about Natasha Rostova, apparently, this actress never read Tolstoy’s War and Peace. There is no light, naivety and sincerity of a young girl in her. Look at the Russian version, where Savelyeva plays, this is the standard of Natasha Rostova for all time, not for nothing that the film with Savelyeva received an Oscar.
That's it!
One of my favourite memories is meeting her. It was at the AFI film awards and l was 22.
You was so lucky!!!!! She was and it’s my favorite actress!!!!! Of all times
@@pepitape5863 It was a dream, The Actor Sam Neil was next to me too.
Aha but what city was l in troll?
Audrey Hepburn is the epitome of grace and elegance. What a beautiful waltz.
You can tell she was a dancer. She's much more graceful than the other women dancing in this scene.
I want a dress like that. 😭
She gave up her child for show business.
Her mother was a dutch countess.
She is dancing with her real life husband in this scene.
My favourite film of all time and the dance at the ball was just so magical. It was such a beautiful scene, audrey is natasha. My favourite version of war and peace. Sublime
Audrey and Mel were my favourite Hollywood couple and it broke my heart when they divorced.A magical scene.Thank you.
I honestly believe also that they were perfect for eachother Audrey was a Taurus and Mel was a Virgo a perfect and beautiful match ! Even Sean said so himself that Mel was happier with Audrey because they both always had fun together 💜
She may not be the most beautiful, but she brings the most treasurable beauty to our hearts!🌹
Well lucky she is
Actually I think she is the most beautiful
Audrey Hepburn forever beautiful!
But she is not Natasha
She's my favorite "Lady Star"🌹 I was so...lucky to receive her signed photo she sent from Switzerland before she passed away.
She was a real dancer endowed with beauty and elegance.❤❤❤❤❤
Timeless beauty - Audrey Hepburn. Everything about her is just PERFECT. She truly is a DREAM in real life - beautiful inside & out; enjoyed every film she's on.
and Mel too❣️
I remember seeing this as a young teen on tv . It was shown in our class at the time in my early school days . I wanted to be both Natasha and Prince Andrei . I for me this is still the most magnificent dance in any film in which there are waltzes . I even have to put Lana Turner and Fernando Lamans aside in The Merry Widow for this one .!
.....Unrepeatable Audrey Hepburn, with her words : "Don't you just love dancing? "
..... Brilliant!
Natural Grace and Elegance. Audrey Hepburn.
The characters, their manner of speaking and the historical dresses and vibes are just so perfect 🥺
Are you serious?! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@user-uo9rf3ll1u yes, maybe not historically accurate but perfect
@@Rin_Chawngthu Nope, totally wrong! Maybe it's perfect in the Western illusive view of Tolstoy's masterpiece. But it's has nothing to do with it. It's just the next Hollywood imagination.
@@user-uo9rf3ll1u i agree with you. It's Hollywood perfect i guess.
she is alive in film.. beautiful face, perfect dress, emotin. oh she is really a legend to be deserved to be loved.
Historical costume dramas are amoung my favorite movies. In this scene, Audrey Hepburn was heartstopingly beautiful!💀

Just a charmingly crafted scene.
Simply magical, wonderful!
"Am I so much in love with him, that all other seem ridiculous?" hahahahahaha I love this line
tak szybko minęło. a nawiasem mówiąc, to Andrea Hepburn jest piękna, i piękny taniec, 😊
so graceful....so elegant.....
However she is definitely not Natasha
i love this dress
So classy and beautiful
So beautiful our hepburn,is born in the netherlands, thank you, janny,
Beautiful, love like this only comes once in a lifetime, enjoy while you can!
Bellissima coppia,favoloso stile impero.
Jacki Jaltslav, I am astonished by accuracy of your comment "Audrey doesn't look innocent to be Natasha".
I'm a big admirer of Audrey and I know a story of how Bpondarchuck was impressed by Andrey-Natasha and how he was searching for a "Russian" Hepburn and the rest is another purely Russian romance. Soviet War and Peace is a masterpiece without equals. I also love opera by Prokofiev.
Jacki Jaltslav, thank you for opening my eyes!. All my life I admire Audrey and I could not just understand what was missing in her Natasha! Thank you Jacki. I'm almost ready to offer you my e-mail.
It’s notable that no one has ever heard of Savelyeva but Audrey Hepburn is world renowned even to this day. You are judging her acting prowess on just one scene of one of her many movies as well as the time period in which it was filmed, 1957, which cannot compare to the acting ability of just a decade or two later. Yet I agree the Hollywood acting in the 50s was stiff. But both actresses overacted the part. I felt the Russian actress was to wistful looking and petulant.
@@tlandry9689 y
@@tlandry9689 Audrey Hepburn is no overacting. She's natural.
My father took me to see this picture in the late 50's and Natasha's waltz stuck in my head from the film I began collecting toy soldiers dressed in Napoleonic period and from that the history of the time of course even as a young lad I adored Audrey Hepburn.
Wonderful waltz by Nino Rota, best known for his Fellini film scores. Beautifully staged sequence.
That's wonderful place and music
She is so beautiful
Beautiful
Thanks for sharing with love
so beautiful
Bellísima muchas gracias
Her voice.....OMG!
she is adorable.....
Yes, she is adorable. But she is not Natasha.
Wonderful
Very nice waltz, reminds me of the waltz in movie The Big Country.
I love this scene. Audrey and Mel fall in love in reality during shooting this movie and here it is possible to see their true love.
The best Natasha between all films by Tolstoy !
NOPE!!!!! She's NOT Natasha at all!

They fell in love at this movie WAR AND PEACE😂
She was incomparable - the internal dialogue is superfluous.
Prince André is played by Mel Ferrer, very handsome. Love him.
Dang it, their chemistry absolutely exist at that time.. Lovely couple
They be married in reality in this time
Just gracious, precious, glamorous and beautiful to see
Hmmm... I still prefer the Russian version. Audrey is beautiful no doubt but in my opinion, the Russian actress depicts Tolstoy’s Natasha much better.
Pears and apples?
Yes. Audrey is too graceful, the Natasha of books was vital, joyfull, too energetic, a healthy/wild girl.
"We" or some of us are not used to the imagination of great men of the past. The outer demeanor of Hepburn is little compared to the hearts of great women in youth.
Wow! First time for me!
Der Film ist soo schön. Ein Muss für jeden Fan von Audrey Hepburn und Mel Ferrer.
audrey Hepburn is just lovely!

Bellissimo valzer!!
Haha! This actually makes me search for the scene in the books because I remember it differently. Andrei danced the first time with her only to do Pierre a favor. I think he only got to be into her after (becase he was searching for the meaning of life and thought: aha! another person! A pretty, happy and enthusiastic girl that helps me nto be so gloomy anymore! :D) And he wasn't on her radar either as he was much older and a widower with a child. She even thinks abotu these things after he proposes. Anyway, feel free to let me knwo what you think, it was a long time ago that I read it.

@splittree I agree while the Russian version is extremly long, there is simply no comparison. The directing, performances, costumes and sets are jsu completly stunning. While I love Audrey Hepburn, this film shows little of russia, the characters and ofcours the book.
1st saw this movie as a teen and didn't know any better. Now the music sounds like something they would play for Gone With The Wind. Definitely a southern air to it
Exactly! Not just the music, their manners and expressions are utterly provincial.
So romantic, but one big costuming point: Men didn’t wear swords on the dance floor. Look at those things swinging around. They’d have whacked into other people all the time.

They did not dance the viennese waltz back in Russia at 1805 when this story took place. It become popular almost 50 years later.
You may be right but the Viennese and others in that region were certainly doing 'something' regarded as a waltz / German tanz as far back as Mozart in the 1780s/90s. Mozart wrote in 1787 an allemand into the Don Giovanni ballroom scene, end of Act I. It was many forms, and soon became fast, turning and "scandalous" from what the history books tell us. But it is a grey area since we only know the music and a few dance master texts, which likely the young people ignored. I would be surprised if some form of waltz had not spread to Western Russia and border areas. Strauss II certainly made it big spending his summers there mid-century. Any research on this? Citation? I'm working on a draft about the early waltz in Austria and environs.
Looks lovely though doesn't it?
+Anders Lindblom And male and female used to grasp each other in a completely different way
+Anders Lindblom Nope. You're wrong. Read the novel: waltzing plays an important part, as it's a dance of seduction, because of the bodily contact between the dancing partners.
