    The Russian boots are called "Valinki" and you are right, they are just a thick wool felt boot. Cleverly made with no seams at all. The German boot was also felt but with a leather lower and soles. Thanks for the video. I need some Mukluks for the coming winter here in Russia.
    Regards, Lars (A Dane in Russia)

    Thank you, this video helped me pick out my winter boots as we recently transferred to Alaska and I have been eyeing up all the gorgeous floofy boots online. Little did I know they would have froze my feet off! I went with the Maine Pac Boots at LL Bean with the removable felt liner.

    We had mucklucks in the USAF and they were great to around -10F from what I remember. We also had the ole stand by micky mouse rubber boots which were good to around -20F.

    Nice video. My father had a pair of boots like your brown 'pack boots' which he got when he was stationed in Germany back in the '40's. He later gave them to me and I wore them till they fell apart. I now use US surplus Bunny Boots; fantastic boot. They don't have a fuzzy lining you have to keep dry just rubber, but between the inner and out rubber layers is so much insulation cold just doesn't get through. Also, because there is no traditional lining, if water does get in, just dump it out and put them back on; your body heat will warm up your foot in short time.

    I own canadian military mukluk boots.(for making waterproof you need (Fjällräven Greenland wax).You need also a hairdryer or a electric paintstripper.(I think you need only the half of the mukluk to wax).You can also google for more information of waxing.

    Only wear wool socks in winter, they breathe, they stay warm when wet. Cotton will get you frostbite. Socks are very important. Don't like itchiness? Look for Merino or Smart wool. I do wear Steger Mukluks. Breathable. Used to wear the Cabela 400-2000 grams. Very very hot even in minus 40 or so actual. Bit too much. The Mukluks flex, good for circulation. I recommend having two pairs of mukluks and alternate so that one airs out and you wear the other. My feet don't sweat, but its good to air them out.

    I've worn quite a few different models of boots over the years in the bush. The best boot I've had to date is the Bogs winter rubber boot. Kept me warm in temperatures below -30 C.

    Use a Vapor Barrier sock and don't get your liners wet in the first place! They work great in ALL footwear.

      Find a cheap wool overcoat at a thrift store and cut off the sleeves and sew your own boot liners. Easy to do.

    In Saskatchewan we don’t call those white boots Mukluks. Mukluks here are made from leather usually by the Indigenous People, men’s are plain and laced like boots, women’s have fur on them. All I used to put in mine was a felt liner. Different regions in Canada must call different things by different names.

    Good pointers. Years ago in 1995 while I was in the Estonian Defense Forces Army I was issued tall Felt Boots meant for Rubber Galoshes to put on or remove from the bottoms.
    What is your opinion/ experience with the Canadian Mukluks vs USA Mukluks?

    Also I always have a spare felt liner that I change out if I can't dry the other one out completely.

    Hey can you waterproof the mukluk boots with spray? would that work because i live in ohio and its not in the negatives too often and the snow does melt and theres running water i have to go over.... would it be bad for them to be water proof because they wouldnt dry out as easily?

    I just wear a wool sock then shove my foot in a leather bag full of cattail fuzz & tie a chunk of tire to it.
    Just kiddin : ) but I saw something like that the Swede bumpkins do on a video, without the tire.
    Great vid, often the most expensive sexy stuff isn't even close to the effectiveness of simple footwear, and many other things, like Mora knives & Swiss backpacks, for instance. Finally got a bunch of those backpacks.

      US Military Mukluks are generally better.
      Taller and better for self regulating then the lower hight White or Black Mickey Mouse Boot.
      The Mukluks just need the canvas tall sides Water proofed with Silacone type spray.

    ah hah now i get it. very iformative sounds like the insulated sole should be extra thick too. and when on the move go to one pair instead

    • @blkcpdconure
      @blkcpdconure 9 років тому

      CriticalElixir good warm insoles are a necessity in sub zero conditions. After I added a set to my old school Sorel's I have been warm down to -30F with thick wool socks. The current Sorel's suck in my opinion. The older Canadian made Sorel's are bomber!

    • @tbrew8222
      @tbrew8222 3 роки тому

      agreed, Sorels are garbage now. wiggys liners make them better than the old ones in performance. However the rubber is also thinner and weaker where the ball of foot bends in the new ones and no liner can fix that. Shoe goo holds it a while though.
      I like the yaktrax felt insoles in most of my winter shoes. They also do really well in my Astral (loyak) shoes. The soles are so thin that they transfer heat/ cold very fast (its like a hybrid between an old pair of vans shoes, and aqua sox) The yaktrax work so well I can wear them in the cold now. Insoles can make a difference.
