Today we're showcasing the first of Ahoy's fleet of ships - "Veloce". Veloce was developed using the lines of His Majesty's Brig Speedy (1782).
Speedy was a prominent 14-gun brig belonging to the British Royal Navy. Built in the concluding years of the American War of Independence, Speedy boasted a decorated service record during the French Revolutionary Wars.
Emerging from the docks of Dover, Kent, HMS Speedy primarily served along the British coast during the interwar years. Following the ignition of the French Revolutionary Wars, she was transferred to the Mediterranean, spending the majority of her career in these warmer waters. Here, she thrived under a series of accomplished commanders, carving out a remarkable reputation through her involvement in numerous engagements, often triumphing against formidable opposition.
Commander Charles Cunningham, her first Mediterranean captain, earned accolades with multiple squadrons, contributing to the capture of prestigious war prizes such as the French frigates Modeste and Impérieuse. His successor, George Cockburn, commanded admiration through his relentless commitment to duty. However, the reins of HMS Speedy fell into less fortunate hands with Commander George Eyre, who lost her to an overwhelming French force on 9 June 1794.
Speedy's misfortune was short-lived, as she was promptly reclaimed and reinstated under the command of Hugh Downman. From 1795 to 1799, Downman proved his worth by capturing numerous privateers and repelling an assault by the formidable French privateer Papillon on 3 February 1798. Following Downman, Jahleel Brenton took the helm, engaging in numerous battles against Spanish forces off Gibraltar.
The last captain to command HMS Speedy, Lord Cochrane, earned his place in history by forcing the surrender of the significantly larger Spanish frigate El Gamo. However, in 1801, a potent French squadron once again captured HMS Speedy. The following year, Napoleon gifted her to the Papal Navy, where she served for five years under the name San Paolo before being decommissioned around 1806.
The music featured in today's video is a new rendition of the "Heart of Oak", the official march of the Royal Navy since it's original composition. The original piece was written in 1759 by composer William Boyce.

Very impressive attempt, I am very happy as being one the dedicated NA players, I guess you guys also have NA experience. You know better but, isn't it better to design the core gameplay, less detailed ship models, and working world, and in time keep increasing the details like ship interior. In that sense, you can put a product like NA, which will evolve in time, yet EA status will give you some cash flow. We all know that NA was capable of holding thousands of players for years, if developers did not decide to kill the game. What made it unique was the hardcore nature of the game, plus unseen naval combat at that time. Even the old NA can still be crazy with some graphical updates, some good decision making and mentaly stable developers who can understand it. Good luck on your journey.

The first ship to be commanded by Thomas Cochrane (Wolf of the Seas) (El Diabolo ) and scourge of the Mediterranean. This ship and her crew captured, sank, or run aground 53 warships. Including the frigate El Gamo. The 54 crew of the 14 gun HMS Speedy took on and captured the 32 gun, 318 crewed El Gamo. It took 3 French ships of the line with more than 70 guns each to finally subdue Cochrane's Relatively small Brig.

This is such a wonderful video. The music, hearts of oak, is the perfect piece to show for this ship, and the pacing of the camera work is so elegant. Not too fast, not too slow. I've no idea what art is involved in that but you nailed it. It makes me tear up.
I've spent hundreds of hours with the Aubrey/Maturin book series, and this helps so much to connect me with a concrete visualization for a beloved ship, that I never really could picture quite so clearly. Thank you.
I hope there is a gameplay option to send light hawsers and cablets to the masthead to bear more sail, and I also hope that the ships feel alive and physical enough that more sail does not always equal more speed.
Are you going too far towards fidelity of modeling with these renderings, though? I hope you aren't misallocating your resources towards arguing how ships should look before you have your gameplay loop figured out. Imo, prototypes should only be brought to the level of detail required to answer your most pressing question about what the ideal user experience is. Look at the success of Battlebit. Laughable graphics, incredible success for the team, because they nailed the movement and mechanics instead of modeling e.g. super high fidelity guns.
I have one more question. In the captain's cabin, you show two chronometers. Wasn't the convention that the chronometers were kept in gimbaled box in the hold, to protect them from as much motion of the ship as possible? My impression was the chronometers were not to be moved, and that the average of the time they showed was set to a pocket watch just before noon to serve the purpose in the navigational workings that day.
Ah, see, look, I've done the thing I said was stupid accidentally and started a conversation about where the chronometers go before you guys even have a game loop sketched out. God the pit of detail is so seductive to fall into. I hope it isn't your La Brea.

    • @AhoyGame
      @AhoyGame  7 місяців тому +1

Hey Adam! Thank you for the kind words. We're just exiting pre production. Much of our efforts thus far have been on establishing art pipelines and conceptual/prototyped gameplay. This was an intentional and necessary step to open up opportunities for early project funding and collaborations with museums. 2024 will be a big year for the projects gameplay development as these systems are now understood sufficiently to implement them correctly. Iteration will of course follow as well.
As for the chronometers, we've seen evidence in paintings and other records that they were made more readily accessible in certain situations. Generally multiples are kept to avoid the chance of failure of an individual.

I was thinking the same thing. There’s a few games and simulators where all I want is calm and relaxing gameplay, but UA-cam is flooded with livestreamers, multi-million subscriber UA-camrs and children playing fast paced, loud and (to me) obnoxious gameplays completely ignoring the detail of the gameplay mechanics and models and then often slagging off the game because they don’t understand and never had an interest in understanding how it works. What’s your betting that, when this game is released, all the big UA-camrs will do their tradition of uploading one video of them playing this game with their friends, failing tremendously at it cuz none of them have any interest in sailing or 18th century naval warfare, showcase none of the achievements of the developers, it’ll get millions of views because it’s “funny” but no publicity will be made for the original game or developers cuz it’ll be titled “me and the bros try to be pirates 🏴‍☠️”, ultimately getting lost and forgotten about in the sea of videos than is their channels.

The game looks incredible, I can almost smell the tar caulking. The MMO aspect ruins it for me. I do not want my enjoyment based on others attendance. My schedule is such that I might want to play at 1am or 6am, loading the game only to find no one else is available is of no interest. MMO's are grossly overdone and have been for years and while they may be good for forcing constant income from subscribers their shortcomings for the players are too great. If I am traveling and want to leap on and explore the Spanish Main, well I'm not going to unless I have a great internet connection. Realism is incredibly important to me, as a historian I look at a lot of games or movies and grind my teeth. That said, gameplay and enjoyment need to be foremost. You are not writing a history book. If things are too realistic, if there is too much devotion to reality, game enjoyment can suck. Spyglasses were like looking through the bottom of a coke bottle, ships could become becalmed for days. These things are realistic, they are also dead boring.

Hey Craig! Thank you for the kind words. We share your concerns about MMOs and we very rarely (if ever) present Ahoy as an MMO when discussing it. MMOs come with a lot of baggage and are enormously complex projects to get right. While the eventual vision might resemble some parts of that traditional MMO experience, we feel that a game like Ahoy is certainly capable of presenting a historically accurate recreation of the late 18th century which provides something for everyone to enjoy.
We're also aware that some are interested in a solo-sailing experience. It's constantly in our minds as we progress the development of Ahoy, and certainly something we'll continue to design around/for as opportunities present themselves. Our belief is that Ahoy can be a great game for everyone, whether you enjoy directly-involved multiplayer games, or just want to exist in a shared world which happens to have other players going about their own voyages.
Anyway, lots to come yet before we'll know for sure if we hit that target, but that's the plan we have ahead of us for the time being :)
