  • France vs Argentina at the 2022 FIFA World Cup final in Qatar is only the 22nd FIFA World Cup final since the tournament was first held in Uruguay in 1930 - over 90 years ago, in what will be the most watched global event of 2022.
The scarcity of finals, and of World Cups, is partly what makes them so special, along with the World Cup beginning with 206 teams, and it being the pinnacle of the most popular sport in the world.
But is the FIFA World Cup final the biggest event in world sport? Well, in this video, that's what HITC Sevens attempts to find out, taking a look at the data, the competition, and whether you can ever determine such a thing.

The advantage the WC has is the fact it only comes around once every 4 years so it has that extra spice if it was a yearly tournament it may well lose its novelty factor even though the Champions league final has huge audiences it's not talked about in the same way as the World Cup final is in terms of hype and build up and the WC is more likely to have those who don't follow the game on any other occasion watching than the CL does

Just about all the competitions listed here (except for the Super Bowl) include the whole world from qualifying to the end with a final. However, much like other sports like cricket, there is really only a small handful of teams that have any mathematical chance of ever winning the final, so to that extent neither sport can truly be considered a world title on this particular metric.

In this last tournament alone, you got Arab People and qatari peopple rooting for Argentina, you got japanese people rooting for Brazil, you also got mexicans rooting for France and so on. Such odd fanatic behavior can only be seen in a tournament of such popularity and cultural influence, which has tons of lore and history, global history, and that's just one of many stories you will definitely encounter.

There is absolutely no way the audience for the 2011 Cricket World Cup Final was as low as 135 million people. India alone probably had double that amount of concurrent viewers, and global viewership probably wasn't too far off what was quoted - maybe 350 to 400 million viewers, considering that there's significant Indian population worldwide. Maybe the figure should be dropped slightly due to multiple people watching one TV screen, but the amount of people who watched the event live is probably close to what was quoted.

Think a major factor in the world cup never being called the 'football world cup' is FIFA insisting it's referred to as the "FIFA world cup" by the media and their increasingly prominent branding (e.g. FIFA being in a larger font than 'world cup' on official signs). A contributor to the situation is perhaps the role that the FIFA football series has had increasing awareness of the FIFA brand since its inception. Simple argument - it is so easy (from an African perspective).
Number 1: You can be piss poor and still play. You don't even need a proper football, in South Africa we took several plastic bags, bundled them together and wrapped them in an orange bag - that's how you make a football.
Number 2: Still piss poor. put 2 bricks and that is how you create a goal
Number 3: You can be from 5 foot 2 to all the way to 6 foot 8, nobody cares as long as you put in effort.
Number 4: You only need boots (in Africa you can play bare footed even) and shin pads (here you can use cardboard for shin pads)
Number 5: You don't need grass, you can play on concrete, sand, a desert and even on a beach.
Those are some but there are more. Sad to see FIFA and UEFA make our sport more money driven (it sucks).

1 the player held the nationality of their new association at the time of their first official appearance for their first national team.
2 the player played in no more than three competitive senior games before the age of 21.
3 the player has not played in the final stage of an official tournament such as the World Cup, European Championship, Copa America etc.
4 at least three years have passed since the player's last senior appearance for their previous national team.
They are only allowed to change once.
So a player like Alexander Isak knows that he will most likely never win a tournament or even qulify for a tournament half of the time with Sweden and another player Erling Haaland also knows he will probably never win an international trophy with Norway or even qulify for every tournament.
National games will never will work like club football, where a richer club can simply just buy away players from porer clubs.

Got to say the Olympics has lost its luster. Barely anyone gave a rats' backside about Rio 2016 or Tokyo 2020. I suppose the men's 100m final is the showpiece event, but except Usain Bolt, most medal winners get forgotten in about 15 minutes' time. It's more of a collection of world championship play-offs and finals for a medley of sports that don't get regular mainstream coverage (swimming, athletics, field hockey)

We are the most populous of football-loving countries, and national team games are de facto holidays here.

The 2009 UEFA Champions League Final is a notable example how European competition looks like the World Cup Final. The only football final between two GOATs, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, had about 109 million peoples watching. If this World Cup Final will be Argentina vs Portugal or the UCL Final was El Clasico (Real Madrid vs Barcelona) or bigger teams like PSG vs Manchester City, there will be 6 billion viewers or almost the current world's population.

@@yudhabagaskara98 Also, Pendu and Pessi had never faced each other in the UCL Final when they are still wearing Real Madrid and Barcelona jersey. They are so close to achieve this three times (2012, 2013, 2015), with the latter had Pessi's Barcelona won the second Treble.
At least, there is one El Clasico in 2011 UCL semifinal, when Pessi scored the beautiful goal in Bernabeu.

The 3 team format will trivialize the World Cup. The current format is way more open to shock results and fun matchups. Even though more teams will be allowed to participate, the chance for shock results will be slimmer as top countries easily make their ways to the semis and higher.

Why india didnt ever qualify? It has 18% of the world population plus 500 plus million immigrants spread around the world? It's not as poor as South America and has *DEMOCRACY* ? Even Iran without the democracy and without the huge population plus it's in crisis 24/7, qualified...why ? Now don't deflect the topic by mentioning other sports or some CEO(since Indians always deflect the topic by mentioning this , when everyone knows no Indian CEO plays for FIFA) shit. Countries with *RICH CEOs* like Germany, France, USA, KSA qualified too...anyway.
