  • A tribute to the life and career of Bill Wallace. A great fighter and seminar teacher. Once you meet him, you cannot help but come away more excited about, not only who he is, but who you are. Out going, fun loving, and one heck of an American Karateka.

    Bill is 71 now. Evidently he took out some (3) young 25-30 yr old big buff punks that were black belts 2 yrs ago. They pressured him by not letting the man walk by. Typical bullies. He said you do not want to know what I do to thugs and bullies. Your picking on an old man, now go home boys before you can not make it home, but rather the hospital. Well 2 of them ended up in the hospital for a week and the other for 30 days. Bill nearly took his life. Do not judge a book by its cover. EVER. Bill still has it. So does Chuck and a lot of these top MA fighters from the 70's. They maybe 68 to 74 but do not let that fool you.

      Can you kick faster?

    • @williamwest7008
      @williamwest7008 2 роки тому +6

      @Eric Shingles Only good because his right leg was useless and trained his left leg to do all the work?? That's waaaay harder than being good with two legs. He had to protect his bad leg, he could only kick with the left leg which he put forward as his lead leg, he was at a huge disadvantage because he only had one leg, he couldn't do any spinning kicks, yet he still became world champion FULL CONTACT. Let's see you or your students do that. 40 years you've been teaching but you haven't been learning, what a waste.

    • @williamwest7008
      @williamwest7008 2 роки тому +4

      @Eric Shingles "never assume" you're assuming Bill Wallace is only good because he trained himself to be great with one leg. Retiring 23-0 as full contact kickboxing world champion with only one useable leg is next to impossible. How is he not great? Yeah but how does what happened to you have anything to do with why Bill Wallace is no good according to you?

    • @williamwest7008
      @williamwest7008 2 роки тому +5

      @Eric Shingles I read your comment just fine, Bill Wallace literally fought full contact kickboxing. Having an advantage from point fighting in kickboxing is irrelevant. That doesn't mean he was overrated, he still had to train originally and get good. There's thousands of fighters, if Wallace wasn't so good then one of them would have beaten him. If he was starting now is also irrelevant, he's not starting now. He started in his time when he was able to and competed in what was available to him at the time. You can't compare fighters from different eras that are almost 50 years apart. The sport they competed in had their rules of the time, the part of the world etc. You don't know anything about fighting or martial arts. Taekwondo is my favourite style, the ITF Taekwondo but training that for 40 years doesn't mean you know what you're talking about when it comes to fighting. Also roles can be reversed if you want to compare rules, you could put almost any UFC fighter into a point tournament and I guarantee you they would lose badly. Wonderboy would be one of a couple that would do well because he has experience in it. See? You can compare many ways if you want but it doesn't make any of the past or present fighters bad because they compete within the rules of their sport and time they're alive.

    I have a fun story to tell about Bill Wallace. I bought his vhs series on kicking and stretching sometime in the 1980's. In those tapes were a few of his fights, bonus material. In one of the fights Bill Wallace has Mike Stone, Joe Lewis and Chuck Norris as his corner men. Between rounds Superfoot puts his mouth guard back in and has a painful reaction. I never knew what the problem was, I just remember him having a bad reaction to the mouthpiece. Skip forward 20 years and Joe Lewis is traveling around to Karate studios, teaching classes, giving advice, selling DVD's, books etc. I decided to go and watch him. Later he was talking to us and I bought some DVD's and I mentioned that I watched the Superfoot fight where him, Stone and Norris were in the corner. He then proceeded to tell me all about it, he even mentioned how upset Superfoot was that one of them decided that washing his mouth guard out between rounds with mouth wash would be a good idea. And now we know the rest of the story :) I want to say it was Mike Stone who thought it was a good idea, I can't remember.
    For those that don't get it, when you are fighting your gums and mouth get cut up (abrasions), so the mouth wash was painful.

    I was lucky enough to have run into Mr Wallace many years ago. I was out to dinner at the same place where he was dining with I assume his wife. I was studying martial arts at Bart Vale's Dojo at the time. Once they were done eating I just said hello and told him that I had enjoyed his movies but did not wish to encroach upon his dinner. He was SO nice, he invited my date and I to sit down at their table! So happy to see a fan, polite and even humble and to me that really showed his true character. Fighting talent is one thing but he has the CHARACTER of a real martial artist.

    Bill came to do a seminar at Thorne, England, i attended and it was brilliant, he was funny, clever and blindingly fast, the final extension of his foot and lower leg in a roundhouse kick was actually invisible!
    He spent some time during the seminar using me to illustrate flexibility (i used to be really flexible, struggling a bit now) and demonstrated the feint hook kick to turning kick or turning kick to hook kick - still using this in my sparring, still catches people out!
    He talked about the car crash that forced him to restructure his sparring to use his left leg as he could no longer use his right, this enabled him to have the left leg followed by the right hand combo, he said it was as if the car crash did him a favour.
    There's not many fighters that have fought prolifically and NEVER LOST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!(Full contact too!
    Legend.

    How could any one in the know (about martial arts) not have the utmost respect for Bill Wallace? He's well educated. Has a MA from the University of Memphis. Became I believe an undefeated middleweight kickboxing world champion. And has been doing seminars ever since. He's proven his abilities in the ring. Something that can't be said for many "legendary martial artists". E.g. Bruce Lee....as much as I've been a fan of his all my life. He was a great "martial artist" but could IMHO never be considered a "fighter" or a "complete martial artist". I think a lot of HIS legend is marketing.
    There's so much myth about Bruce. How he's challenged by extras on his movie sets. On the street. Yet there isn't ONE photo or video clip. WHY?? Why did he not step in the ring??? If he lost one fight his "legend of being inhuman/invincible" would be shattered. He'd just be another talented martial artist (traditional). JKD...not proven (in the ring...if it's so superior...the UFC champs should be JKD experts).
    In Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story...there's a scene where Bruce is at Ed Parker's famous Long Beach tournament...people scream out "..prove IT!!"...some of us that have seen the movie knows what happens. Did that happen? I highly doubt it. Or there would surely be several photos taken. There is NOT ONE photo of bruce in competition. Point- or full-contact.
    Great entertainer and "traditional MA"...Wallace was /is the complete package...as was Joe Lewis...Benny "the Jet" Urquidez...

    The man was so good. "The best kicker". Full-contact arena. And had a masters degree from Memphis U. :) Not some dumb brawler who just liked to fight. Usually in control. Doing tons of seminars after retiring. Imagine him at his peak. Competing. If he was actually majorly PO'd at you and you had to face him. At least you'd know it''d be over in a split second. :) Wallace vs Jackie Chan in JC's film. :)) Chan had black belts in a few styles but wasn't a competitor. Wallace a 23-0 PKA kickboxing champ. Or was. Real fight...would have destroyed Chan...again within a few seconds...maybe in less than 1s. :))

    Not tooting my own horn, but karate and boxing made me a better man and much better person! I fought full contact karate for about 17 years all over Japan, Okinawa, upper state New York, and New England. Also participated in quite a few tournaments around North Carolina and Virginia. Got a little bit of hands on boxing training from three famous US Marine Corps boxers, in the “snake pit”, aboard Camp Lejeune, NC. Trained with Leon Spinks, Jeff McCracken, and Kenny Norton. I don’t fight anymore, but still hold a first degree (Sho-Dan) black belt in three different styles of karate. One of my best memories in the Marine Corps, was when I got to train and learn from a real live Okinawa 10th degree black belt in Okinawa, Japan in 1978. I was also blessed enough to attend several seminars and hands on training In Philadelphia, PA, with the legendary Joe Lewis, “Superfoot” Wallace, Benny the Jet Urquidez, and several other great martial artists. I was attracted to karate as a young US Marine, while stationed in Sasebo, Japan. At that time, I was on a Marine boxing team, but because I am a white boy, I never really got use to the nose shots. After watching a Japanese kick boxing match in Nagasaki, Japan, I was attracted and fell in love with karate and other martial arts. Besides boxing, I learned Japanese karate, Korean Taekwondo, and Okinawa karate. To this day, I still love karate and other martial arts.

    Awesome video. I had the great pleasure of training with Bill at a seminar years ago, and at the end of this tribute video with the magazine cover of Mr. Wallace, I had that magazine and got him to sign it for me after the seminar. He posed for photos with us and was so kind and generous. He is an inspiration too us all.

    I saw what was supposed to be a "mock" battle between the sexes with Bill and some female MA competitor a long time ago - maybe late 70's, not sure. They were supposed to be pulling their punches and that was explained before they started. But the female came out and went hardcore on Bill, which he tolerated for a while, almost as if he was confused by her aggression since it was supposed to be a "demonstration." But after a minute or two of tolerating her full-on attempts to put him to the mat, he put her down very quickly. And thus ended the demonstration! It was over and he walked away smiling. She was pissed and I hope she learned a good lesson from Bill that day.

    I saw him interviewed recently. He said that his fighting stance and technique were a result of an injury to his right knee he sustained while practicing Judo when he was younger. That is why he only used his left leg and stood sideways...it was to protect his right knee. Turned out to be a very effective fighting style!

    Actually, Bill competed in some point tournaments during 1974, before the first full-contact world championships that fall. I saw him in one -- the USKA Grand Nationals in Milwaukee that summer (June, if memory serves). I fought as a junior in that tournament and Mr. Wallace refereed my first match.

    Bill Wallace was a great karate champion point karate. But please don't confuse the PKA organization in the seventies as kick boxing because it was a joke. It was nothing more than point karate with gloves And ridiculous rules with kicks only above the waist. I not to be any disrespect but bill got his a** handed to him by Blinky Rodriguez when REAL KICK BOXING THIGH KICKS shut all he had down
