- Learn side stance Karate fighting style from full contact champion Bill "Superfoot" Wallace, interviewed by Jesse Enkamp (The Karate Nerd). This point sparring footwork is popular in Sport Karate, but MMA fighters in UFC like Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson love using the bladed stance for successfully keeping their opponent at long range distance. This is a great tactic for side kicks, hook kicks or blitz striking combinations. Visit www.karatebyjes... to learn more.

No problem... thankyou for the video, it was great !
All of our old school badass martial arts guys are almost gone, and we have got to respect the ones that are left so it was really good to see that you brought one of the last living legends on your Channel. Keep up the good work you got a great Channel
Great job Jesse
The Godless A good Boxer exposes Muay Thai in MMA and they have to step up there Boxing game 💯
Really educating, I like this!
"The guy who said no pain no gain is dead"
"I like kicking people. It makes me feel good"
this man is a treasure
He's definitely given legitimacy to my feelings n thoughts.
I learned a serious philosophy and stance today. This is deadly stuff from Wallace.
No pain, no brain
I learned karate a long time ago and now due to time availability I am learning BJJ instead but I still love to train strikings at home. His technic and his quote is the treasure for me. Thank you very much for this video.
My Boy Vinny I like it man
There's no cognitive dissonance when I listen to Mr Wallace talk. A straight shooter, informative and genuine!
Sometimes a hook beats a straight.
He wasn't raised in the dystopia of political correctness that we have today.
This is simply AWESOME! I’m a 5th Degree Shihan in yoshukai karate. My late Sensei emphasized keeping the body to the side, i.e., don’t “square up”. Thanks for driving this point home. Great videos. Keep up the good work.
I wish there was a love button for this video. What a legend Bill is.
I found it.....💓
This man is a legend. As a front footed kicker, he is my hero.
"Legendary" is exactly the right word for this man. Growing up, my dad followed no fighting, no sports whatsoever. But he knew who Bill Wallace is.
Bill "Superfoot" Wallace is an absolute legend and true gentleman. Thanks for having him on your channel. 👍
Nothing like the wisdom, knowledge and experience of someone who knows true and practical applications. Bill Wallace is a legend and rightfully so.
Sensei Bill Wallace is so brilliant and amazing.. I can listen to him talk for hours.
This Bill Wallace is a Master in life for sure! I wish to age that gracefully.
Love Bill superfoot Wallace! The way he protects his body, the lifting of the shoulder and the head backward slip is such an excellent defense! No telegraphing at all! One technique sets up another. He is one of my favorites! Thank you so much for showing a little of how he does his techniques!
Absolutely brilliant stuff here from Bill & the key is SIMPLICITY! Straight line to the target, no BS no fluff no nonsense.
Excellent video. What a great honor for you to have met with him. Nice techniques !
@10:50 This is the answer to the ever-so-popular calf kick that everyone is doing in professional MMA.
Until you take a couple leg kicks lol then you have to rethink that
@@tonyd5990 What??? The counter evades the leg kick and catches you with a kick. Stop trolling brah ...
Kwaku Anansi “brah” I trained in the super foot system for 3 years. It’s good for point sparring or fighting an untrained individual but that’s about it. It ain’t trolling when you know what you’re talking about
Kwaku Anansi I also trained in the joe Lewis system, it’s not muy Thai but a little more suited for mma than super foot
@@tonyd5990 Three years isn't enough to achieve the mastery to "make it work effectively"
Bill Wallace is a true legend! Definitely an inspiration in my early martial arts development. Great to see he’s still active and fit, goes to show you that age is only a number.
Man, I swear if you could bottle the spirit and the passion and fun that Bill Wallace brings to the martial arts, the world would need no other drug. 😊
BTW i have never practiced karate, mainly MMA, Muay Thai, Boxing and Wrestling. But i have adopted o lot of techniques from Karate and Full Contact Kickboxing (PKA). Thank you for the amazing content Jesse
Excellent!
This is worth coming back to, from time to time.
Bill Wallace is a real treasure in the martial arts.
Great interview Jesse! :)
6:28 Awesome a guy that developed a style to cope with his handicap mentioned another style that was also developed for handicap boxers.
Mr. Bill "Superfoot" Wallace. . is living legend, I love him also for his modesty, simplicity and straightforwardness, thanking Mr. Jesse Enkamp
I love seeing people truly enjoy their art. Much respect
Met him. Took a seminar with him. He was truly great, and such a friendly guy.
Bill is my second favorite all time, Bruce being first. I studied his foot technique forever, never had it down as it’s not easy. He basically lifts his left knee high, the leg hangs, the foot protects his groin and as it hangs lower. He is able to alternate it into a side, hook or round house…at about 60 mph. You can’t tell which one is coming. If you had this down, and had Roberto Durans head movement, you’d probably be unstoppable as a stand up fighter.
Wallace looks fit as a fiddle he's a master of positioning, great fighting I.q.
I studied kung fu that was really interesting him breaking it down from the different moves from the one leg. An amazing man. Thank you Sir.
When I was 15 and competing in tournaments i remember meeting Mr. Wallace at a Karate Tournament in 04', he came down to the southwest part of Arizona for a meet and greet was also a celebrity referee for a fight. When I meet him and shook his hand it was like grabbing a metric ton of bricks haha, such a nice guy and was very wise about the martial arts world, a memory I will never forget!!!
Good to see jesse open for learning and having a student mentality. Great
God bless a simple man with a wealth of knowledge. There will never be another like Bill Wallace.
“The guy who said ‘no pain, no gain’ is s dead guy” -bill ‘superfoot’ wallace
Best quote i heard so far!!!
Keep it up, Jessie
Thank you for the videos💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Followed it up with
“I like kicking people” 🤣🤣🤣
Superfoot worked out in the studio where I took privates in the late 80's. Up close, he was scary as hell, with deep set, tiny, shark eyes that would pierce any veneer of self-confidence. But he was always kind and helpful. He took time to teach me his techniques, where I picked up the habit of a side stance, shoulder coming up for punches, and a solid side kick. Bill was working on his stuff in the corner of the mat one day when a black belt instructor got a little disturbed by my best technique in his face - a fast straight left jab - and caught me on the side of the head with a jumping kick. The teacher apoligized, and I got up feeling fine, just a bit sore, no worries. In the locker room, Bill walked up and put both hands on the sides of my head and asked if I was okay. He checked me out a while, then patted my face. He gestured back toward the mat area, shook his head, and said, "That dumb guy!" Then he went back to his workout.
This gentlemen has kept his youthful enthusiasm - infectious
Amazing! Turning a weakness into your strength, inspiring. You see I have a broken PCL in my rt knee from an accident, much like Mr. Wallace, I have to adjust my karate to fit. Because of my knee, I never fancied myself a 'kicker', but this has inspired me to turn it into my strength. Domo Arigato
I've watched this a few times now, and shared it with my Dad (he loves it). This has given me the inspiration to go back to a martial art/boxing. I have a knee issue as well (I detached my PCL playing rugby) and so much of what Bill demonstrates here makes sense to me as a way to overcome that weakness. I also have a rotator cuff issue and I can see ways to compensate for that as well. Now I just have to budget for classes.
Wow. Jesse gets a full personal one-on-one interview with Bill Wallace. Too cool.
The insight he's giving rn is phenomenal! I swear, this is gonna help me with mma quite a bit. I already have an adesanya/ thompson style. This is of great use! Thanks!
I also ruined my knee during judo... and also i am one leg kicker : P (is 2 years after operation and last week I decided to do some friendly randowi with my friend and I injure my second knee (-__-) - but this time it is just small thing - not broken ACL like before XD) soo is not that bad ; ] i am not competitor any more, but.... with bad knees you can still train martial arts : )
How can you train with bad knees and get to a higher skill level?
@@dutch4973 I think we can found more "judo jokes" hehe example... "judo wrist", "judo elbow", "judo collarbone" and "judo ribs" heh these parts like to do "crack sounds" in tournaments : D
@@DELL0015 some people would like to say "train harder!" or "find another way".
I choose to change my martial art : P
but actually right now I slowly am trying to comeback to judo (throwing people is fun!) : )
@@MonkeyFist yes it is 😊
That's like me. I'm in my 50s and have arthritis in both of my knees, and have to change my ways, like relying more on hands than ever before. What's weird is that my hand techniques have gotten so much faster as a result.
he is great indeed. This stance is the normal combat stance in taekwon-do(other than WT), very effective for a myriad of combinations. Great video and I am happy to see Bill in great shape
Sensei Jesse
Funny every time I think I watched all your older videos one pops up... lol....
Great training lesson...
I've been lucky to attend many of his seminars over the years, he used to be in Atlantic City every year for the world martial arts seminars and dinner.
Always took extra time with every student even if I stopped him in the hall he would take 10 minutes and just talk about his experiences and kick me a few times 😂 was great.
Even in his 70s and two hip replacements the man is no joke.
Thanks again for the videos
I love his voice and the way he explains everything
There, just finished. Bill 'Superfoot' Wallace is an amazing man, I would love to see him some more in your videos. Again, thank you.
I watched Bill during his heyday, I love this interview! Excellent Jesse! Love your channel!
This guy youre with is full of wisdom. He looks like he could be a martial arts legend some day.
Awesome, thanks Jesse for another great video.
Excellent video, excellent philosophy, find your own path, find what will work for you and what won't,discard it in any kind of martial art or sport. Its harder to hit the target if it's sideways compard to standing square, big difference.
I have an old book of his on stretching. Guys a genius.
Very good interview you did a good job talking with a Great Champion. My Taekwondo instructor turned me on to Bill Superfoot Wallace and his fights were crazy. I am 53 and still fat so I have added The Superfoots style with mine. Bill's stretching is unreal also. Have a great Safe Day
Side stance has its strengths (+) and weaknesses (-)
+maximized range of lead hand and leg
+lead leg techniques can be harder to predict
+body is smaller target
+harder to target sternum and esp. liver
+easier to control distance
+excellent for quick engage and disengage
-Rear leg kick is more telegraphed
-Vulnerable to leg kicks
-Vulnerable to sweeps
-Vulnerable to single leg takedowns
-Vulnerable to in-fighting techniques (clinches, hooks, knees, etc) if distance is compromised
Very Similar to Savat. I start off almost sideways. But I can open up with a Cross, Rear Uppercut, etc. if necessary ;)
I started in Savate, but moved to international rules kickboxing, because there's more competition in that rule set on the East coast U.S.A. American Kickboxing, which was promoted by PKA is practically dead. It is Oh so cool you mentioned Savate, because most English speakers never heard of it or seen it or practice it.
@@ppkrex i am not referring to the Sport ;)
THANKS FOR THE ADVICE. LET THE PAIN OR INJURY REST
Bill SuperFoot Wallace a real martial artist, a great champion 🏆⚡🏆⚡🏆 ! Amazing man!
A Real badass. i wonder what are his thoughts on Bruce Lee
bruce lee would have to have been able to take punishment no matter how fast he would have been hit from head to toe so i reckon bill wallace would say depends on if he could take a good shot
He seems like the nicest, coolest man
Wow, the amount of wisdom behind this guy❤🔥
It show that Taekwondo stance can be and is usable very nicely ā little diffrent būt it is very interesting to see this legend using it spectaculary
To throw a good cross sideways requires a whole lot of training, it took me about 15 years at the moment of releasing a kick you can use the momentum on the ball of the foot to end up semi sideways semi straight to immediately release a cross on the moment of impact and use the ball of your feet to end up sideways again before your foot is back on the ground and your cross hit the opponent or end up front to continue the assault into a blitz.
This is my favorite one of your shows' awesome thank you . love the masters of wisdom .
Old school side fighters are the reason why the tackle take down was less effective and why kick boxing picked up. Like in boxing they call it "out step" stance. But most people use "in step" and now mostly is forgotten. Bill Wallace is a true sifu of "out step".
Jesse keeps flinching when Bill demonstrate because he knows Bill likes to kick people, it makes him happy.
3:16 i like how jesse reacted a bit. Gotta respect it
This is why stamina, endurance and evasion training are important. You have to tire out someone you can't read without getting tired faster. Unless their strikes are nothing to you.
My instructor was talking about this guy and he is just as he described.
Bill Wallace is one of the greatest. I had the privilege of watching him at a martial arts demonstration in Sydney over 25 years ago. He was hilarious, coming out to eat the water melon Tadashi Yamashita had cut with a sword.
"Basic" karate is more for in the ring and sport. As a method of stand-alone self-defense, it is very limited, and must be combined with additional arts. All said, Have always loved Bill and his mantra and ability in the ring.
I always had a stance like this and had no clue it could be this effective
Amazing interview!
Thank you!
Bill Is Still Dangerous, Great guy too, Legend.
What a Great Fighter
He is really limber and fast. It's amazing how he could do the full splits, even in his advanced age.
ONE OF THE BEST...
absolutely an amazing video for an amazing fighter !!! the legend Bill Wallace
Awesome interview, Jessie.
Great video Master Jesse!.... The old sensei is a real badass!!, all my respect.
Hopefully we will have the pleasure of meeting him at the gathering in Reno this year!
Crazy how I came back to this video 2 days before this video is a year.
What a frikking legend!!
A legend in the world of MA!👍❤️
I have played around with his style before as i am still trying to find one that would work best for my scoliosis. But it is honestly fun to do especially when kids these days don't know who Bill Wallace is it's the older people who you don't want to do the stance against unless you want to mess around as odds are they know about Bill Wallace
A living legend !!
BAM! And theres the sidekick
Omg Jesse! You did train with superfoot!!! Incredible!
This is great, what a legend
Thank You Jesse 🥋
That was a Great video, thanks! Bill is such a lively Dude💐.
Bill is a legend :)
Guy is a genius love this guy and yes he does sound like Clint Eastwood
It’s fun kicking people
Superfood Bill is a Legend ....good Fighter with a Superb Kick.
Too stay Sideways ...is little Dangerous....
Guys with hard Low Kick,s destroy this Stand and the knee.
Bro this guys a genius
Salute to Bill Wallace.
It's amazing still in this age and still freaking fast.
That was a great interview. I’m just starting to learn about Bill superfood. Awesome 👍
Glad you enjoyed it!
Superfoot
@@KARATEbyJesse Jesse mind if I ask. Have you ever used his style in a fight /spar ?
His voice is like a fine whiskey from a good year.
Thanks a lot for advices Mr wallas😊
A true legend! 🙌 👊🙏
i remember seeing wallace do a hook kick on a bicycle while he was doing the superstars tv show in the 1970s i tried it once but i wrecked
Thanks Bill that's good advice.
You are very welcome
the way he describes his defense reminds me of the Philly shell in boxing
Bill looks great!
what a great guy.
It's crazy to me how he can't use his right let to kick but he can still use it repeatedly to support his left body as it twists and lifts left kicks. You'd think his right knee would become irritated from just being the foundation of his fighting.
