My first fell walk aged 16.
No money for kit so i wore my cycling cape, pacamac and wellies in the relentless rain.
    Epic and soaked.

I did this a number of times as a small boy (around 9 or 10). I honestly don't remember all the scrambling. The only thing that stuck in my mind was the exposed bit you have to more or less step across. Anyway. Nearly 40 years ago, and just past those ultra-dangerous times known as the 1970's - how did any of us make it through!!?? - and memory fades. I remember it was one of my favourites, too. The way small boys think, or thought in those days at least.

Nice balance of commentary and views. Nice balance between being cautiously realistic and bigging the route up.👍

Jack's rake put me off scrambling for life.
The last bit where you need to climb onto a sloped piece of flat rock with hardly any finger holds and one slip your off was the nail in the coffin.
I never realised how much I suffer from exposure until I did Jack's rake

    • @conradburdekin722

Did it today. That sloping piece was tough!

    • @spruggins
      @spruggins 2 місяці тому +1

@@conradburdekin722 You can avoid that dangerous sloping slab by continuing left and down a bit then up, it's easier and safer and you aren't relying on your boot sole grip to not come off. I have done it across the sloping slabs and the other way, I can see how people get killed up there.

Completed this for the first time last Saturday. Fantastic scramble with stunning views. Will be doing it again. Quite challenging in places and not for the faint hearted.

My first big outdoor climb was up Pavey's Ark and then down Jack's Rake on a beautiful summers day in July 2006.

I’m just looking at an old photo of me on Jack’s rake from 1987. I still remember it well. Sheer adrenaline.

I did this myself today first time ever climbing don’t get me wrong. It was extremely high and once I committed, I could not return back. I definitely will not do it again but overall great experience.

I’m trying to build up my skill and confidence to take on Jacks Rake next year. I’ll probably go mid wk and wild camp near by so I can try it out early in good conditions when it’s not to busy 🤞going to try some smaller scrambles 1st. Any good suggestions?

It's a good scramble alright but there are many better scrambles in the Lake District. Many better ones in the Langdales for that matter.

Done this yesterday in wet weather conditions and was s**ting myself. Not bad for a first time scramble but would definitely recommend dry weather as the wet rock is treacherous.

Did it in scouts at probably around thirteen. In all honesty, scared the shit out of me

From experience I'd recommend doing it without a heavy backpack. It's great but slightly nerve wracking when you feel your bag wanting to pull you over the side.

Did this scramble about 13 years ago. Found the start easy, reached half way at tree point with great relief. Next section bit more scrambley and technical yet less exposed. Was happy reaching the summit. Went up in a pair, would not have liked to tackle it on my own! View from top was awesome and well worth the effort.

did this on my own and wish i has someone there to discuss it with. about half way up i was pretty dam scared on the exposed ledge with the exposed scramble crux at the end of it! had a sit down for 10 minutes before i had to courage to carry on!

we went mountain biking in the lakes a few years ago and on the last day of our stay we opted for this climb instead of riding , i thought ok might be fun, but on the difficult sections I felt really uncomfortable ...but i had two experienced climbers with us who guided me up, got to say the feeling of elation at the top was fantastic

I have always avoided Jacks rake because I can't cope with the exposure to the fall. I have not gone anywhere near it because I know if I got to the bottom of it my competitive nature would kick in and I'd have to give it a go.
