His voice has as distinctive a sound as his guitar playing. You always know its him.

Masterpiece of this fantastic album. Mark's guitar touch and sound have never been si powerful and subtle in the same time. My favorite song from Dire Straits. He's the perfect singer for the words and music he writers. Not a great singer but he's perfect for his own music.

My favorite Dire Straits song. Chilling and beautiful.

I agree he‘s not really a „singer“, but compared to Dylan he‘s Freddie Mercury 😅

I'd rather compare him to Leonard Cohen than Dylan. Especially on this song.

Classic song. You can hear, that Mark put everything he had behind this. A few years later The Scorpions took his ideas and turned them into kitsch called "Winds of Change", one of the five worst tracks I've heard in my life, and a much, much bigger hit than "Brothers In Arms". Naturally.
BTW, Bob Dylan is a fantastic singer.

Mark Knopfler sounds here like Leonard Cohen. Great song, great delivery, great guitar playing.

-We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')

Subtle tasteful & nuanced are perfect descriptions of pretty much every aspect of the album & really a hallmark of all his & DS's music.

From the first time I listened to this album I thought it was absolutely the perfect last song to the album. Knopfler's guitar phrases do as much to give the feeling as his singing does. A good song, but my two favourites are the first two of side two. Good job, Justin, on reviewing this album.

Great reaction 🙂 like you mentioned, this is their most successful album, which means it's the most popular. However, many die-hard DS fans consider it one of their worst 😂😂 If you want some great songwriting and more complex, more guitar-heavy stuff, you MUST check out their 'Love Over Gold' album. And the groundbreaking sound and freshness is on their debut album, which is also great. I feel like you cannot really appreciate or understand DS and MK if you listen to Brothers In Arms. Anyway, nice videos, we appreciate it 🙂

Ooooh, this is a tough one. My brother was a big fan of DS, so on his funeral 12 years ago it was played twice. This version and an instrumental cover. And especially when it comes on when I'm not prepared for it I'll just break down 😢 Even now I'm getting misty eyed here.

other than the two singles, the rest of the songs are just well-recorded beautiful sad songs with lovely melodies, subtle lyrics and gorgeous instrumental performances.

There are some great live versions of this out there as well. This is a song where i thought it was going to build up and up and then have some big sound but it never does. And it is perfect to me that it does not. It fits the lyrics to not “go big”. Great end to the album. Been waiting for this one to see what you thought!

There was a great, TV series from the 90s in the UK called Brothers in Arms that used this as the theme tune. About army vets trying to adjust to civilian life.

He’s not a singer, he’s a mumbler. This is my favorite track on the album now because of the guitar.

If you've not heard any of his solo albums their are a lot of good tunes in those too. I don't think you'll be disappointed. Kill to Get Crimson and Get Lucky are both ones I play regularly. I normally don't play single songs from anyone, I usually spin whole albums.

Really like the guitar work on this one. Very Pink Floyd-esc. If David Gilmour was singing and they traded solos it would be perfect. Again don’t think I ever made it this far in the album. This is pretty nice.

The story of a soldier dying on the battlefield. Completely akin to a movie score. Now I see the narrative form much of this album takes (with Ride Across...The Man's...). For me the disparate nature of the songs is difficult, and when you bring in Brecker, Hakim, Neil Jason, Tony Levin, etc...hmmm. But with 30 million albums sold, hard to argue.

It was nice to hear a full album reaction from someone who actually understand and appreciates recording quality (and actually knows a lot about music). This last tune is played in numerous military funerals allover the globe. And quite a few absolutely gorgeous live performances of it has been done by both DS and Mark Knopfler as a solo artist. I warmly suggest you take a look at DS previous album Lover Over Gold. It has a bit of everything: abslotutely stunning musicianship as well as very film noir moods, you name it. Regarding Mark's singing....he is more like a story teller, a narrator. As a solo artist he has put more effort in singing too and he has a very good voice actually.

I still don't care for Mark's vocals but the music on this song is so nice I can almost overlook the 'singing'.

This feels like a short album, but it's actually pretty average. But I didn't realize the CD version has longer versions of a couple songs which pushes the overall run time about 10 minutes longer. And yeah, the hit singles are kind of outliers, but that's sort of been how it works on DS albums. For instance, "Industrial Disease" was the hit single from the previous album, and it's nothing at all like the rest of the album.

    • @obiwanbenobi4943
      @obiwanbenobi4943 2 місяці тому

Yes, ID is certainly the outlier there... I like that they have different types of songs on the albums and I think some are meant to be lighter to give some contrast to the other songs.

Great album, yes the sound quality is awesome (especially the vinyl) but being a DS fan I naturally dont rate this as their "top", kinda like how I dont call MCMLXXXIV (1984) the top VH abum of the DLR era, but its awesome. The tour's show for this album was incredible though the night I saw it, Nov 85.

Glad you reacted to this one. First CD I ever owned and played it to death. This is somewhere on my list of fave albums. This is the best song on the album in my opinion...I think you need to be into lyrics to fully appreciate this song. A few years after this Mark put a band together for a side project and called the band The Notting Hillbillies. Not a commercial success, but a really interesting album that has a strong country vibe. The single Your Own Sweet Way is a song I still listen to from time to time this day - worth checking out if you are interested in Mark...wonderful, subtle guitar work: ua-cam.com/video/sXlsXewn9YA/v-deo.html

I want to apologize to all the people that love this album. I’ve probably been unnecessarily harsh. 😁 I do recognize the great guitar work and like I said in the first reaction of this album that I love the album he did with Chet Atkins. Also his movie work that I’ve heard is nice. I just don’t like his voice and think the album over all is a little overrated. So, I respect him as a musician and was just having a little fun. Where else is a better place though for unnecessarily harsh critiques
