Oh yeah! The one and only Eric Clapton playing backing guitar to the best guitarist in the world Mark Knopfler.......period!! Just shows anyone how unparalleled Mark Knopfler truly is.
All versions of this timeless classic are wonderful but this is my personal favourite so thanks for that. The emotion that Mark K puts into this is plain to see on his face and plain to hear from the notes he brings out of his guitar. At this troubled time in our history this should be played morning, noon and night to as many people as is humanly possible.
Your right about one thing, nobody plays the guitar like Mark Knofler, the whole group are very talented musicians, they are all great if you watch Alchemy live they focus on the whole group, it's magic the drummer is on fire, thanks for your reaction
The emotion in this version is way beyond any other. For my former military personnel colleagues. And those that didn't come home, or that left part of themselves behind. "Now the sun's gone to hell, and, The moon's riding high, Let me bid you farewell Every man has to die"
Simply, sublime. Probably the greatest performance of this song by Mark Knopfler. Hard to get my head around the fact that this was 36 years ago. I remember watching it on TV.
I think the ending phrase is saying we are all humanity (on both sides of every conflict) and the men and women fighting are all 'brothers in arms'. So we are fools to kill each other because of the fools at the top (who are not fighting and dying). If no one fights, there can be no wars. Idealistic; but how can war end, unless we each realize that there is nothing more valuable than life?
The one piece of info about this song that I don't think you mentioned, and I haven't noticed in the comments, is that Mark wrote this song after a friend of his died in the Falklands war; it's written from the point of view of that dying soldier who never got to go home... I imagine that's one of the reasons Mark gets so emotional every time he performs it. It gives me chills every time.
Always enjoy your insights. Regarding your comments on the final two lines of the song, I agree, and would like to add something additional. All soldiers in war--even the enemy--are "brothers in arms" to their own fellow comrades, who also find themselves in a conflict not of their own making, sharing the same horrific experience as you. Therefore, both sides in a battle are really one-and-the-same, even though they are fighting on different sides. Basically, you're trying to kill someone like yourself, your "brother". Definitely an anti-war song.
Huge DS fan here. This song is so good...and so deep and touching. I have never seen this recording. Thanks for the reaction. Keep exploring Dire Straits!
When the Falkland’s war was going on , I lived in a house where the RAF and Navy pilots practiced dog fighting over my house before they were deployed, it really was scary. My twins where about five Daddy what are they doing I was asked , oh just practicing I said , this was released a couple of years later , I thought it was a great song and loved it My twins are now serving members of the British Forces both have done Iraq , one has done Afghan as well , this song has a much deaper meaning for me now , especially when they talk about what they went through So proud of them and all that served with them , let’s hope Old Men don’t get young men and women killed again for egos again in 2024
Love the song, really enjoyed your reaction. It's the first time I've watched this video, and I was surprised to see that onstage with Mark was Eric Clapton backing him up on rhythm guitar, you can see him full view at around 735 - 7:55 and again at 8:25 of your video. That's a star-heavy stage.
I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to learn how he plays, and I think the best lesson is in the last 20 seconds of the clip where most people would play something extra, and you can see him assess everything and decide that the best thing to do for the song is do nothing
While IMHO live is ALWAYS better and especially with this concert and the Alchemy Tour, but the visual artistry of the Official video is just incredible. Although, I do agree that if I were choosing just one over another, this would be my choice! @@peter9910
But people don't make war. There are politicians, with their own interests such as re-election etc. Who has to go to war? Yes, the man in the street. at least not the children of those who decide. Enjoyed your reaction too.😀
Ok Critical Reacts bit of info on this Gig it was from Wembley stadium in 1988 and i can remember watching this whenever it went out live and still this set on VHS cassette somewhere in a Box anyway trust me there's two more amazing songs that i plead with you to react to from this show which are " Sultan's of swing " and Romeo and Juliet which features without doubt the Greatest Saxophone playing I've ever heard trust me mate don't pass these two songs up please 🙏🎶🎸🎺
Mark is not playing the gibson les paul guitar that he always uses on this song very interesting Not sure what guitar this one is but sounds absolutely epic as well
The guitar being used is a Pensa Suhr. Custom made by Rudy Pensa & John Suhr, long time friends of MK and supplier of many of his guitars during the 80's/90's. Loved the sound of the pale blue one he used on the track 'Ride across the river' & 'So far away' on the live BIA world tour in 85/86.
There is an acapella group called Home Free that recently did a cover of this song. A lot of people love that cover as much as this original. It is definitely worth your listen!
I am not sure you got that line "We're fools to make war on our brothers in arms" right. I think he means "fools to make ware" as in attacking those brothers in arms or rather people like you and me on the other side of the frontline. Saying that we shouldn't even make war. On a different note, some kindred spirit went through the trouble of remastering the DS concert from 1986 in Sydney. Well worth watching: "Dire Straits - Sydney 86 - New Pro-Shot copy. AI Version 4K"
You know your are a guitar god when Eric Clapton is rhythm guitarist!
but this was back when Eric was 'woke'. "We're fools to make war on our Brother in Arms."
So true!
Yeahhh!
It's great to have Eric Clapton on stage, however Mark Knopfler does not need someone else to make him sound great
This also contains my favourite live performance of Sultans of Swing. Mark is the best as far as I'm concerned.
This is what the term 'genius' is all about. I'm absolutely speechless. Mark Knopfler is just an amazing songwriter/performer/guitarist.
Oh yeah! The one and only Eric Clapton playing backing guitar to the best guitarist in the world Mark Knopfler.......period!! Just shows anyone how unparalleled Mark Knopfler truly is.
My God, that was good too. I've never listened to the live version before. Mark can really make that guitar cry. Man he's good.
Héllo de France Bonsoir la version de 1993 est encore mieux et le solo de guitare encore plus prenante 😊
You've been missing out man, Dire Straits live are usually 🔥
So true; Mark can really make his guitar cry. It's really an extension of himself.
@@gilbert7253agreed.. live On the night
This is possibly the best anti-war song ever created. The official video is stellar.
that guitar....the voice of the angels...
This performance is where mark knofler left planet earth for a while
A song that is at the same time anti war and pro soldiers is an achievement in both songwriting and humanity. One of the best songs ever made.
My friends who have served consider this their anthem. Well suited to Veterans / Remembrance Day.

"One Humanity, One Justice"
Only 2 guys could make a guitar crying. One of them is Mark and the other is the guy where mark picked it up from. The late great BB King !
88’. Saw it live in France on French tv, come into guitar watchin MK this night, 13 yo… Never Forgot , never will
This performance should be the 8th wonder of the world
My god, tears come to my eyes… Mark is in his own❤️
Best living guitarist ❤
When "Slow Hand" is backing you up, you have officially made it to the absolute apex!!
Great stuff. And shout out to the great Eric Clapton backing my guy up. Two guitar gods on one stage. Doesn't get any better. 🎸
Your right about one thing, nobody plays the guitar like Mark Knofler, the whole group are very talented musicians, they are all great if you watch Alchemy live they focus on the whole group, it's magic the drummer is on fire, thanks for your reaction
You are so RIGHT. No one plays like Mark. You should check out some of mark's solo work. Sailing to Philadelphia is a great song. Peace ✌️

For my former military personnel colleagues. And those that didn't come home, or that left part of themselves behind.

Written about the Falklands War in 1982
Yes. However. I feel the song can really apply to any conflict. Very emotional song indeed.
Not many guitarists can claim to have Eric Clapton on backing guitar.

There’s a bunch of live versions out there. I think this is the best one.

Eric Clapton played many times with Mark Knopfler. They are neighbours and very good friends. Always good to see.
Love this.❤❤❤❤
You’re right: no one plays guitar like Mark Knopfler. There may be better players, but no one plays like THAT.
We can see a classic scene with this song, on the TV show "Miami Vice" in the 1980's, (in last scene of the episode: 'Out Where the Buses Don't Run')
To me the best BIA Version.
I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to learn how he plays, and I think the best lesson is in the last 20 seconds of the clip where most people would play something extra, and you can see him assess everything and decide that the best thing to do for the song is do nothing

Edit- dang, the closed captions are not very accurate.
was with eric Clapton in second guitar what a concert best live version of Brothers in arms !
This is such a great song....
Hey Shawn, you have a great channel here!
I absolutely love this song, but you really need to watch the video along with the song. It shows and adds more emotional content. It is so good.
Agree!!
Might have had a copyright issue
It won the Grammy for Best Music Video in 87’.
Strongly disagree
