I’m loving the jelibuilt hydra in my 97 7.3. Stock everything else. Can’t wait to do some newer injectors with a KC and a down pipe. Sounds like this might be my turbo.
Do the hpop first. I did 180/0 and couldn't do a pull without codes. Went with a Terminator t800 pump and now it works perfect. You might also see a little mpg boost and better throttle response.
@@logancartright98 205/30 hybrid injectors run fairly good on a stock fuel system. Hpop is definitely something that should be done, but those injectors still preform great without an hpop upgrade, GRANTED that the OE hpop on the truck is a healthy one
@@yumejdm2871 the super duty hpop will support it better than the factory 15* obs hpop but you will feel a considerable difference with a upgraded pump
@@logancartright98 100%, definitely have to know your truck. I've got a 96 with 375k miles and my tunes + 66/88 compressor housing and running hard up top causes my hpop to lose some pressure so I personally am definitely going to need a new one. Looking at a CNC Fab stage 1.
Ive got an E99 7.3 in a F-350 4x4. I did an article for Diesel Power magazine years ago on my then stock ride that was sponsored by BANKS where we put their entire 6 pack package on the truck and dyno'd it to compare it to the 6.0 Ford had come out with in 2004. The truck has been amazing and the bigger intercooler and Banks chip was a great improvement with no loss of MPG. Now with 300,000 on the motor and having replaced all my sensors with new Motorcraft stuff to ensure reliability, I'm ready to change the stock turbo to the Stage 1 - .84 A/R KC unit. I'm running stock injectors and not looking for massive hp gains. What I am LOOKING FOR is potentially an improved mpg. QUESTION> with your KC Stage 1 modification to your truck and having run it for awhile.. Have you seen any increase in mpg with the KC stage 1. ..???
If you are referring to the Gen 3 it will have a 0.90 AR that is unique to this new KC. Significant improvements have been made to the exhaust housing and compressor housing. Plus the advantage of the S300 style turbine wheel. I don’t know if you would pick up huge improvements in fuel economy but I would be willing to bet you would gain a little. It would be really interesting since you already have all the other supporting mods to see what a Gen 3 stage 1 would do on your truck. FYI I do have some banks stuff on my truck and the Gen 3 definitely responded well. It’s not anything dramatic but all the small things are are improved with out sacrificing any other areas. For example I really liked my Frank/hybrid set up but it was a little laggy with banks tunes but pulled really well above 1800rpms and also sounded really good. The GTP38R was fun but crazy loud with the cast wheel and was only a little better than stock. It was also kind of sluggish down low but did really well in the mid and high range with banks tunes. With the KC gen 3 stage 1 it just comes on fast, is very responsive, isn’t crazy loud, and pulls the whole RPM range. I have been very happy with mine. I hope that in the future KC will come out with a Gen 3 ball bearing stage 1 in something like a 62mm. That would be really cool.
How did you manage to get your hands on one? Im in the process of doing turbo and injectors, now I’m considering just doing injectors and waiting for the new turbo
I think the stage 1 would do very well on a ZF6 truck. The responsiveness especially between 1800-2800 is much better than stock. The best way I can explain it is you are cruising along at say 1900rpms and you start up and small hill. When you start to apply the throttle the turbo comes on faster (more responsive) and provides you with more boost pressure at basically any rpm above 1500.
I would contact KC directly on that. I was originally told late 2024 or early 2025. However in a recent conversation with a KC employee I was told it may be available a little sooner. Once again I would email or call KC with any questions regarding availability or specific technical questions.
You mentioned one of the upgrades would-could be injectors and speaking about the injectors and HPOP is there even anymore improvements, refinements and or advancements that can be made to these parts/components? anything stewing in the pot so to speak in your opinion and knowledge I'm pretty curious actually. Thanks Ray
@@raydornbush The short answer is yes. Just look at what DS has done with the adrenaline HPOP and CNC fab has done with there stage 2. With the 7.3 having sort of a resurgence in the aftermarket we are seeing new products getting added and modernized. As for injectors I have heard at least one company is currently working on something that is supposed to be really exciting. Details are still really limited. However with things like the 7.3 summit that PHP is putting on I suspect a lot more information will be available next year. Fingers crossed.
I am hearing they will be available anytime now. Contact KC for pricing but I have heard rumors of $1450-$1550. Considerably less than a GTP38R certainly.
From my understanding yes. It’s a journal bearing design and I would expect it to be a similar process from looking at the internals. But once again I would contact KC with technical questions so you are getting information directly from the horses mouth.
KC has around 50 of these units on test mules across the country. They vary from near complete stock trucks to wild. I came into it in a very strange way honestly and that’s kind of a long story that I might do a video on down the road. But long story short KC was kind enough to let me purchase one early and test it out with no strings attached. The only thing they ask was for me to give them feedback on how it performed. So far it has done well.
I have had one of the first stage 3 kc300xs with 1.00 ar wheel with 300 % injectors and 238/100 injectors for a few years . With cnc fab hpops all the goodies but im really looking into this turbo because mine dosent spoool intill super super high rpms. Very fun but im wasting and missing out on tons of more power . it also smokes a ton so it draws to much attention . Not the good kind 😂
Yes once the new and shiny wears off. Getting a good mix of driving in city/highway/towing/mountains in. Probably about 1000 miles on the turbo so far.
Glad i found this video i was literally just about to pull the trigger on a kc stage 2 for my truck. And injectors. I think ill wait a bit longer
Thanks for the thorough review and explanation of Gen2 changes.
Any time I hope it helps.
Great review. Looking forward to hearing how it runs

Wonder how it’ll do with a 6spd. I regularly tow 18k lbs with my 7.3/6spd combo.

How's the wastegate? Does it open at 6psi like the factory turbo. Is it easy to adjust the wastegate?
Just tie it closed... I welded mine shut with stock injectors for the factory one.
