fun fact : at the end of the video, when the Warrior whistles for his chocobo, the one that answers is the exact model of chocobo that legacy players received as a gift for subscribing during a window of time in 1.0, though all legacy players regardless of sub have a special tattoo on their upper back between their shoulder blades to signify that character as being a "meteor survivor".
That’s a really nice touch and nod to their old school player base
Those characters also have a special tattoo on their back and their names in the credits for ARR.
An equally fun fact: All those same legacy players (specifically those who paid sufficient amounts of sub time, not just folks who dropped a one time sub immediately and called it good) also *Permanently* have a reduced subscription fee for the game as a show of thanks for supporting the game during its rocky 1.0 era. FF14 truly treats its oldest supporters exactly how you'd want such devoted supporters to be treated, and that behavior invariably spreads to how it treats the community as a whole.

I've quit wow ages ago and I started playing FFXIV like a bit over a month ago and I can't say I can ever see myself touching wow again. The community is really nice, classes are fun to level, story is good and theres so much more. Lotta things to do in FFXIV
As somebody who did something similar during BfA, after playing WoW off and on since the second month of Vanilla, and who now has almost 2500 hours in FFXIV, enjoy the ride! If there's one thing the community likes more than the game, it's seeing new people enjoy the game. Like introducing a friend to a TV series you love, we're hyped by seeing other people get hooked on the thing we love.
And no matter what anybody else tells you, the two most important things to remember about the game are to enjoy it at your own pace, and to make sure you max out the music volume for the boss fights, there's a ton of fantastic music in the game.
I played XIv since 2.0 but always had WoW in the back. However since SL I pretty much quit for good. I tried DF but the game is not fun, mythic + has not been fun for me since legion and the content nerfing, gear grind, fomo, and horrible story just made me nit want to go back at all. If I need. Break from XIV besides raiding I just ply other games. Feels way better.
yep i've heard a lot about the music and i cant wait to hear it myself too! i never even thought of it like you mentioned with the tv series but that makes a lot of sense!
One thing I feel FFXIV does which puts it ahead of WoW is the fact that FF puts a lot more care into making past content more viable even when new expansions come out; there's not that feeling of being funneled to the current "endgame" while everything else gets neglected or even deliberately pushed to the wayside. The game's library of content only grows more vast as time passes instead of being "phased out" and getting lost into irrelevancy or even outright deleted from the game; and with a minimum of ten more years ahead in terms of further development, one can only imagine how large yhe game would be when it's twice as old as it is today.

For context a plot summary of 1.x: The Garlean Empire is trying to conquest the continent of Eorzea (where the game happens) and they found that the smaller moon was artificial, created by an extinct civilization and they found a way to control it. They got the big idea to drop it over the Eorzea forces to win the war, but unbeknownst to them this moon Dalamud was really an imprisonment hull for the elder dragon Bahamut.
And that elf Gandalf looking guy is Lousioix Leveilleur, it will be mentioned a bunch during ARR.
No matter what happens, may you one day look back on this reaction with fond nostalgia.

@@JustRuss There is an end-of-version ARR raid that has the rest of what happens after the Warriors of Light disappear. Believe it or not, it goes even harder.
FF has had for decades epic, over-the-top trailers, but holy crap did they go for gold with FFXIV.

There is a raid series called the Binding Coils of Bahamut after you complete the base game of ARR. It is optional content and missed by a lot of players. I recommend intentionally completing this raid series and watching a very important cutscene that plays after one of the fights.

There is sooo much lore in BCoB that it's sad that it's optional. But considering a lot of the fights in there, I can see why. Let's just say they've learned a lot about raiding and there's a reason we have normal and savage now. That being said, it's still lv50 so a lot of people unsync for it, but as a streamer, you can get actual parties for it, they are pretty much the only people that can now lol.
@@JustRuss resist the urge of spoiling yourself here. I made the mistake of looking into it on youtube instead of beating the boss (aka suffering) and watching it after all of this. Do not recommend.
Some context on the Trailer:
-The 1st part of the trailer, is the closure of the 1.x servers. The moon (Dalamud) was approaching the planet. So, they used that to do a reset from 1.x to ARR.
-The warrior is representing "you"
-A lot of the characters, you will know them eventually.
-Chickens!!?! HOW DARE YOU!!! :P they are chocobo
-When the group respawned, the respawned 5 years in the future (So, the massive destruction done by Bahamut, the dragon, is now 5 years in the past)
For the rest, you will learn it mostly in the game :D
Using the shutdown of version 1.0 as part of game's lore is one of the most clever MMO ideas ever. 😆
Good context, doesn't spoil anything. If anything, I remember starting and was more confused by why they kept making a reference to a calamity that happened 5 years ago off screen (i didn't watch the trailer)

@@AoyagiMei How did you miss the intro when you created your character? This cutscene plays when you start a new character, always, and it's unskippable.
@@orangejuche there is an unskippable cutscene after you create your character but it is not the end of 1.X cutscene with Bahamut blowing things up which gives you the needed context
One thing I want to point out as someone who was actually around during the 1.0 ending and everything: There's a lot of misinformation about it from people who have only seen a specific video on UA-cam that has been edited to have the cutscene play at the end, complete with a loading screen. This isn't how it actually happened on the day of the shut down.
The "End of an Era" trailer did not play within the game client when the servers went down. Every single person online merely got what was called an "R0" error (also known as "No Route to Host") -- this was accompanied by a chat message that said "Confound it! We've lost contact with the main host!" before being kicked back to the main menu. The trailer was simultaneously released on both the FFXIV Website and also on UA-cam for people to go watch. The "End of Eorzea" video on YT presents a more nostalgic, fascinating look at it - but it's unfortunately not representative of what actually happened with the players that were around for it.
If you think about it though, it makes sense: The 1.0 servers for XIV were located only in Japan at the time (no NA or EU exclusive servers or datacenters), meaning there was high latency for anyone outside of Japan, and they were always notoriously unstable on top of that. They were even worse during the final shutdown event because they allowed all existing players, including folks without active subscriptions, to login to experience the end of the game. This caused the game to crash *a lot* for most folks during the ending event. Trying to push a large cinematic cutscene to all online players at the time simultaneously would have almost certainly caused the game to crash for everyone. It was a lot smarter to just let the servers come down, and then redirect everyone to the trailer via the FFXIV website and UA-cam. They also did a Live Letter from the Producer following the server shutdown and they played the trailer right at the start of it as well.
the end of era trailer splices together the end trailer you saw with the trailer thats exclusive to the coils of bahamut raid into a singular narrative to show what happened.
I never get sick of watching this cinematic, can you believe this is what they used to shut down the 1.0 version? It’s beautiful.

@@JustRuss People aren’t wrong when they make comparisons to Cataclysm either, but I think this is just ever so slightly better. Though I like to imaging Bahamut and Deathwing would get along well.

@@VashimuXIV Bahamut absolutely dwarfs Galakrond who dwarfs Deathwing so 20 times is a humongous understatement 😂 DW wingspan is around 3-400 meters. Bahamut's wingspan is 13km 😅
So, something to note about FF14 that's different from WoW: Your race doesn't affect what classes you can pick, and you can play every class on the same character, without having to make an alt or Respec your stats, as every class levels separately from one another. Switching classes is as simple as equipping the weapon for the class, and the game lets you save armorsets, so that you don't have to individually re-equip everything when you switch classes. Also, classes in 14 are very linear in their growth. There aren't any skill trees, instead you simply acquire skills from leveling up/doing your class quests. Your Black Mage will have the same spells and available equipment at Level 50 as everyone else's Black Mage.
I'd like to point out that two jobs do share leveling, but its because they both come from the same base class. Both Summoner and Scholar share the same leveling since they are upgraded versions of Arcanist, just with different roles and stats, Scholar is a healer while Summoner is a magic dps.
Rewatching this ten years later still gives me chills.

The old man transported the heroes (the player characters) 5 years forward. What happened in the immediate aftermath is a mystery in the world that you learn about in the ARR raids (lvl 50).

From what I have gathered, those who played in 1.0 and started ARR when it was released, instead of ariving at whatever city you pick to start, it will actually show you being teleported to outside of it instead of arriving as a fresh adventurer on a chocobo carriage. This happens because, the players from 1.0, are teleported 5 years into the future, into the beginning of ARR. And some have noticed some minor changes in the dialogs from some NCP's if your character was around 1.0, it reallt makes you see how much effort they put in the game to even give this small unnoticed details unless you look closely.
Best part of ff14 for me compared to other mmorpg is that the old expansion endgame content never becomes obsolete you can still play all the old content in the base game.

@@JustRuss also some of the older locations get revisited in expansion content. they dont just abandon it to time. so you will see people while leveling at much higher levels doing their own content along side you.
10years of playing this game with almost 27k hours playtime and still get hyped seeing new people join the game and start playing through the story and enjoying it, and the ARR trailer gives me goosebumps everytime I really hope you do coil to get to see the extra little conclusion to ARR.

what makes it even more epic is the fact that first part of this trailer was the ending of FFXIV before realm reborn when they closed the servers. so like all the hardcores that were online in the last moments of the server got this sequence and now they all have some tattoo on their avatars to signify their previous adventures

@@JustRussfunny enough was talking about wanting to do coils of Bahamut with some friends and one friend who is a veteran player mentioned how it is one of THE hardest pieces of content early game. matching end game level stuff. so as a sprout myself who just got to heavensward. take your time, get used to the game and how whatever cool job you pick up works and maybe find a group with some friendly veterans to do it with. it sounds like it needs some vc coordination lol
@@JustRussThat is the first raid designed by the team so it has some oddities that later 8-man raid series don't have and is definitely worth experience at MINE (Minimum Item Level, No Echo) which is a set of rules made to imitate the original challenge.

@JustRuss yes, it is an optional raid series as others have mentioned. Is super important lore-wise so is highly recommended.

Usual notes apply. as a fresh face don't feel any need to do regular side quests that dont actively interest you, just focus on MSQ, class quests, and other blue quests not associated with new classes. Just MSQ should be plenty for your first class but this game is balanced for running more at the same time especially in the earlier game. So if you obsessively do all the side stuff on the same class as MSQ youll out level it real fast and trivialize the content or have the game revoke skills to do it. Last friendly note, Any time a level requirement is noted it almost universally is class level and MSQ progress to the same level requirement. So for example lvl 15 you can gain access to the hair dresser and challenge log but only after the lvl 15 MSQ.

I've been obsessively watching new player vids, especially WoW refugees. I was a Lineage 2 player when WoW first was the big thing and moved to different MMOs over time. Recently went back to Aion Classic and I had forgotten how TOXIC communities can be. This story and the people who play have been amazing over the last few years. Welcome.

So fun fact - and admittedly remembering mostly off of a vague memory - I believe this trailer played when players did the final quest chain for Legacy.
Just want to point out that those players that had an active account for FFXIV 1.0 when they shut the servers down has this exact thing as their backstory. Everyone else has a different one. Legacy players also had a special Chocobo and the Goobue mount they have is also different (if they got one while 1.0 was running). Yoshi-P made it very clear that he was very grateful for those that stuck around and he and his teams went out of their way to acknowledge that.

Fun fact; Bahamut, the dragon here, is in EVERY Final Fantasy in some form. Even the first one on the NES!
Golden crystallized aether leftover from the calamity of Bahamut's release from his prison within the lesser moon of Dalamud.
I to this day can't get over the soundscape of this trailer. The battle scene is so increadibly well done when it comes to the sound. It is legitimately horrifying in some places, like "horrors of war" level details. Like, we hear the epic clashes being mixed with screams of pain and death, it's messy and raw and chaotic. The scene of the Black Mage blowing up the Magitec walker is a prime example of this. Not only do we see the driver for a split second realise how fucked he is, but the impact and explosion is mixed with a *very* well done scream of death as he's vaporized by the blast. He died painfully and they did not hold back in conveying that.

The flames of truth trailer will reveal what happened to the mage that teleported the heroes into the future.

The white flash in the middle is the point where the original 1.0 servers shut down. Imagine watching that, then having the game literally go dark for about 18 months... and then comes the second half, literally showing the rebirth of the world (and the game) from total destruction. :)

I think what also makes this trailer so timeless for FFXIV fans is this was the trailer that played after months of build up in 1.0 story events. You could actually see the moon getting closer and closer, your character would get nightmares after sleeping in the inn, and there was a lot of talk already about Dalamud being the end. Not to mention, since they actually did kill the servers, it really was the end, in game and in real life!

Bahamut even changed the climate of the realm. There is one city state in perpetual winter that says in dialogue it only became that way after Bahamut was freed.

The ARR Cinematic reminds me too hard of the Cataclysm Trailer that WoW has, think they got a bit of inspiration from them, both MMOs changed their playstyle, story telling and map with this Expansion
how did they get the comparison? let just say you can stand on Bahamuts puny arms and get exact measurement from how tall the person is. plus Deathwing can stand on castles while Bahamut can stand on mountains to make it easier to envision.

As a WoW player of over 10 years I hate to say It but I joined ff14 last year and haven't looked back.
another person free from the grips of wow
World of Warcraft definitely set the trend for the genre (like for example, the very concept of "instances"), but it's definitely well past its prime. FF14, on the other hand, has flourished significantly since ARR took it down and rebuilt it from the ground up.
In the end, it's about the game *as well as the community* and the one in FF14 is certainly a very good one. I hope you'll enjoy your time.
I was expected a trailer that revealed what happened, since most react to that version instead and it's a more epic looking version, but oh well. Lol XD
I would recommend "WoW players experience ff14" but I believe it might be a little too early for that lol

Nah when you play the game enough Shadowbringer is the best... FF14ARR trailer kinda make sense when you know prior lore but it is quite cool though
The gear they wear is the level 50 job gear, their weapons are the relic quests for a realm reborn. The longest most annoying relic quests
I recommend, when you watch these trailers. you can do it in-game on the title screen. Under "Movies & Titles" and I highly recommend making it a ritual to watch an expansion's trailer in that menu when you reach it, as it also changes the title screen after it and can sometimes really set the mood
Edit: very importantly. Don't watch the trailers before you make it to their respective expansions. Some of them can be very spoilery.

@@JustRuss Fair play, I can understand avoiding spoilers and whatnot. But in the case of this trailer in particular, there's very little that can be spoiled because most of it was supposed to be known beforehand.
This trailer was actually played as a global in-game cutscene right before the game shut down before the rebirth, and you were doing quests learning about this stuff and meeting these people until the moment it all came down.
There are SOME spoilers that I'm glad they didn't get into, but, for the most part, I think it's fair to ask who these important-looking characters and things are if you're curious :)

Kinda grr at the guy in chat who's like it's Death wing, it's deathwing.... no. Bahamut is older than deathing, so deathwing looks like Bahamut.
Remember Kids. Bahamut did absolutely nothing wrong.
"Deathwing is an absolute Soyboy"
FFXIV fans been saying this since BEFORE someone scaled Bahamut to Deathwing. Just in trailer alone, one of Bahamut's Megaflare beams would have wiped out easily a quarter if not more of Stormwind. That thing basically hit EVERYTHING across all its beams across all of Eorzea (by now, you've probably seen most of that nation). Just for being loose 2-3 minutes, Bahamut caused enough damage to actually change the landscape and irreparably change the ecosystems (including weather!) of a WHOLE NATION.
Meanwhile canonically Deathwing was loose for about a year or so before the end of Cataclysm and barely changed like 4 locations permanently, and nowhere on the scale that Bahamut did. Ashenvale's 'transformation' is like a casual joke compared to what you see the changes to Ishgard or even North Shroud. And those are locations on the periphery of the battlefield we saw. Even Vylbrand (AKA where Limsa is and perhaps the furthest place from where the trailer occurs of note) saw a more meaningful change than most WoW zones from Death Wing.
When someone successfully scaled out Bahamut though and for lulz tossed in Deathwing, well, that's all she wrote. Deathwing has forever been considered a joke since.
Well Cataclysm actually was the biggest Expansion Blizzard gave to WoW ever since.
9 new Zones (Hyial, Uldum, Vashj'ir, Twilight Highlands, Deepholm, Tol Barad, Gilneas, Isle of Kezan and Lost Isles)
overhauled 10 existing zones (yeah not entirely but that would've made the community even angier that time)
overhauled a few starting zones like gnomes and trolls (they have own starting zones now)
made it possible to fly in azeroth (so a complete redesign from Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms)
changed the hunter by giving him infinite ammo and focus
caster classes actually don't go out of mana anymore when they cast 3 spells regardless of level
Archaeology as a new profession
Guilds had an actual purpose by leveling it and giving you bonuses
new portal hubs in stormwind and orgrimmar
7 new dungeons and three new raids and revamps of two classic dungeons like Deadmines and Shadowfang Keep
2 new races
5 new levels (was the only short coming in the expansion)
new pvp maps (that ffxiv still refuses to add in and make the pvp actually fun)
also you didn't need to spend gold anymore to learn spells
oh and they removed that bad "your next attack uses heroic strike" mechanic and made everything that was bound on weapon speed insta-cast, which is a good thing for combat fluidity and gave all classes more abilities in their talent tree and a better access to abilities at level 10
The Community didn't like cataclysm because blizzard invested too much time changing the zones and after launch they gave all their resources to the raid/dungeon department to bring them out asap.
I started FFXIV near the end of Shadowbringers and got most of the story (finished Endwalker but skipped a few cutscenes in the epilog)
All I saw in my ~700 hourish playtime in FFXIV new Expansion like Endwalker were 2 new classes and 3 new zones + 10 new levels and new abilities to the existing classes thats it..and obviously the story
So, about Bahamut, this giant ass dragon... First of all, this is not the original Bahamut. Further info is spoilers. Second, notice when the characters are trying to seal him again. You can see the curvature of the planet for a second (5:01). Deathwing wingspan is about ~360m. Bahamut had the size of a city. And what Deathwing couldn't accomplish in years, Bahamut did in less than 3 minutes. No wonder why they had to seal him in fricking space.

4:13 --- Remember those symbols. Or not - but there are symbols and you'll see them again later ^^ Its funny that small details keep repeating and at some point you're actively looking for them.
5:46 --- When 1.0 shut down, this was what the players saw: they witnessed their game world literally blow up. They didnt get to see the chocobo part, that came at release of ARR, to them this was the end. And then they got a life letter :)
8:36 --- Remember the dragon spawning out of the moon? The short is, he did that. The long: eeeeeeh... you'll get there ^^

I love how you mmo content creators think youre clever. Like were not gonna notice that you're hamming it up to try to drive players to your new favorite game. I have not seen one single interesting cinematic for this game. It's just a bunch of random japenese stuff with terrible music. The animation is not good and they never seem to give a hint of wth is actually going on. The only thing I'm certain is happening in this cinematic is that FF is ripping off the whole sword of Sargeras thing from wow and cant even hold back from throwing a ripoff of deathwing into the same cinematic. Gross.
