  • G'day running fam. Which is the best running watch? Apple v Garmin.
Apple Watch comes from a lifestyle angle but has recently delved deeply into sports. Meanwhile, Garmin comes from a sports background but continues to build out its lifestyle features.
I’ve owned one of each of these bad boys. An Apple watch for 2 years and now a Garmin for 3 months. I've run 1000s of kilometres, miles, metres, feet, yards and furlongs over this period. So I've tested them pretty well.
This is my full and honest review of these two watches as a device for runners, including:
    0:00 Intro
    2:04 Running Features
    3:33 Accuracy
    5:52 Usage
    8:01 Battery
    9:21 Other Features
    11:51 Integration
    12:59 Cost
    14:02 Summary
Hope you enjoy my review and it helps you decide on your next running watch. If you had a good time here, chuck us a cheeky LIKE or SUBSCRIBE.

My mum and brother are gonna kill me for not using all those features they spent the extra dosh on!

    Great video!
Love my Garmin Marq and while I’m tempted by the smart features of my AWU, the look and fit and finish of the Marq is just too good.

Great review. My Apple Watch also causes me a little grief when I swim but I love the style and other features.

I liked the video. The audio was pretty tough to hear though. Had to crank up to max to hear what you were saying many times.

Have you tried using a chest strap HR monitor and linking it to the garmin watch. Much much more accurate

BTW on the Apple Watch if you press the crown and button consecutively you can pause your run then stop when hands are less sweaty.

I noticed the distance problem with AW. Don't know where the problem comes from as the map of the run looks perfect.

Still have my Garmin Forerunner 45. That's all I need. It does the job... I run. I run with the Forerunner. NO distractions.

If you want accuracy but don't want to use chest strap, get the Coros HRM for your arm and connect to any watch you have.

Good comparison! The accuracy point is debatable. I agree Garmin’s gps accuracy is superior to AppleWatch ultra but I used mine on a track and the results were pretty consistent. Ultra’s HR sensor and sleep stage tracking are much more accurate (not even a debate 🙂 check the quantified scientist for more info) so I guess it depends on what you consider to be key for your interests

I would look at it a little differently. We only run for a small part of the day and the rest of the time we have work, family, and personal errands. By this the apple watch is probably a better fit for most users. I can track nutrition on the watch, there are different apps for water and meds tracking and they are better than the built in garmin. The strength training app on the Apple Watch is much better than the one built into Garmin. That said, the Apple Watch Ultra has enough battery life to run a marathon. Let's be honest, how many of us run more than a marathon? And even if we do, how often do we run more? But to work, to have a good synchronization with the calendar, common with smartphone and laptop focus mode and other conveniences would be desirable every day.
Plus there are good third-party trainers for running, maps on workoutdoors work incomparably smoother and faster and the map of any region can be loaded on the fly into the watch.

I've recently switched from AW SE 2022, to Garmin Forerunner 265. I'm much more attracted to the running features, and the fact Garmin actually tells you what the stats mean, how to improve, and how sleep, HRV, stress etc all affect your ability to run/workout.
My issues so far (only 1 week into Garmin) is that the HR seemed to be really innacruate running? I think as you say - the strap was too loose, but the HR really threw me off mid run. Never had this with AW.
My only other confusion was the huge difference in VO2 max calculations. Apparently Garmin needs to adjust to get the baseline and that you should focus on the trend over the value itself. Not sure if you have experienced the same disparity between values?
Aside from those two features, the customisation, look and feel of Garmin is much more for me.

Garmin gave me a slightly better VO2 max (69) than AW (65) so I took it 😁

Thanks, this was great. I've had a Garmin for a few years but I'm very disappointed in how it performs today. The pace, gps and pulse is way off for me, not sure I want to stay with Garmin :)

Also, I use a Coros Arm strap and connect it to my Apple Watch so I never lose heart rate connection. It’s awesome for $79

7s do not have 47mm case, that's why is "s". 47mm is the normal Fenix 7, then 7x is the 51mm

On Garmin you can also have all sorts of shortcuts, for wallet for example. Just look for hot keys in the system settings 😎

I wish this video wouldn't be so close to my everyday experience. When it comes to sports, they nail it so dang well while Apple is so gloriously failing this as an app company. I am just about to send back an Apple watch Ultra after finding a good offer - and the main reason is battery anxiety. That said, they nail one metric way better than Garmin: sleep. So if you care about your sleep tracking, you kinda are stuck with Apple in a way. I decided not to focus on the time where I am not even aware of wearing a watch (sleep) and rather check my internal metrics of feeling tired or recovered. Sadly, poor sleep messes with the otherwise great Body Battery by Garmin. The moment they solve the sleep phase issues in their algorithm. I'll never look at any of the competitors.

Why doesn’t anyone mention this? You don’t have to have all the buttons. If I’m running or walking I push the crown and don’t even have to say hey siri. I just say “pause workout” and it pauses. I can say “resume workout” and it resumes. I can say , “stop workout” and it stops. If you don’t want to push the crown then you can just say, “Siri stop workout” and it stops. Why do you need all those buttons?
