Wanted to share with you how we care for our Oscars and what to consider if you plan to breed them. They are great fish with a ton of personality - we call them our little water dogs because they basically act like...well.....dogs only in water! : -)

@@PrimeTimeAquatics hello, I have 2 Oscar’s that are 3 inches. When I first introduced them to each other they locked lips and circled each other for a few minutes, But after that they follow each other everywhere and kinda rub on each other in a peaceful way as they swim around. Do you think I have a male & female or is this common for 2 males to show this behavior?
Spot on for the feeding . My oscars are EXTREMELY messy eaters. Had some Betta pellets and just tried it and they ate damn near all of it. Thank you sir

Bought mine Christmas 2021. It's now bigger than my hand. What a personality it has. Very awesome fish. As for aggressiveness; Mine just aggressively eats. Very powerful fish.

I did not know much about these fish except for big and aggressive. Thank you so much for the information. These fish get to big for me to handle. So I will need to enjoy yours. They are beauties.

Agree with you 100% about the tank size, unless you have some serious filtration. I had 2 large power filters hooked up to a ten gallon tank filled with an under gravel filter and about 6 inches of gravel. I fed this into my 125. worked very well and cut the water changes down to a minimum. I also had some floating plants in both tanks to help with water quality. Worked very well.

great video man. you have me wanting Oscars more than ever now, although I don't know if i'll ever have a 125 gallon. if I did get a bigger tank I would have to put my mixed Malawi cichlids in there... I've been dreaming of that for 10+ years. thanks for the info, going to check out some of your other older videos.

Other good companions: chocolate cichlid, festivum and best live food: earthworms - they love them and they make no mess.

My black tiger Oscar was in a tank with a green terror, jaguar and Jack Dempsey and he was king of the tank
Wow. That's cool it worked out that way. I have found once the Jack's or Green Terrors start ruling a tank they can be rough!

I had some jumbo food sticks I got for free and they just shredded those things - little pieces going everywhere. Not cool!
Well i have 4 different types of oscars- in my 250g tank. Copper, Albino Tiger, Super Red, Albino Red....All are about between 13 to 15 inches...All are near about 4 years old....They wer an inch 4 years back...Lot of memories with them really treat to watch.

I have 3 full grown oscars in a 150 gallon tank with a green terror a electric green and a red devil and one gold fish lol they don't even bother eachother I love it! But I have 2 baby oscars in another tank and they were locking lips this morning

I have a 75 gallon with a tiger oscar, jack Dempsey, firemouth, convict, green terror and a jewel I got them all around 2 inches they r between 4-5 inches now yes as they get bigger they will go into a bigger tank or their own tanks but the most aggressive fish in the tank was the jewel cichlidmoved it to a 30 gallon with a polleni and a dividers untill I can get another tank

I actually have and oranda and a black moor that pretty much school with my Oscar's. The Oscars are only about 6 inches now. And the oranda and black moor will be moved to my koi pond soon

I think the red oscars look much prettier than the regular tiger oscars for sure. that solid gold with that gray head on the red oscars look really good on the red oscars

I don't disagree with the tank size and I've seen Oscars in a 40 gal. I'm that guy who has been successful keeping my Oscars healthy and using 75 gallon for decades. I keep 1 pleco and a large peacock eel with them. I have never checked or owned a ph reader. I run high oxygen sources and constantly filtered and moving water. I'm on my second generation of Oscars. They are a very happy fish community. The eel interacts with the Oscars regularly and points them towards the food. They are a good team

For some reason all my Oscar's have been super aggressive. I added a whole bunch of other new world cichlids with my tiny oscars in a 3ft tank but had to move them due to them attacking everyone, even bitting the net.
Don't worry the 3ft is just a qt tank. I'm in the process of setting up a 6ft×3ft×3ft.
That's the crazy thing about cichlids. They often have such diverse personalities. Mine have been really good about accepting new fish once they get used to them.
Cmon Oscar, fish are FRIENDS, NOT FOOD...

We had an Oscar in our 75g planted tank. Bought him as a juvie, knew he'd get big. But we needed something that would clean up a swordtail explosion. Baby swordtails were his favorite food. But by the time he got big enough to eat the adults he was big enough to hassle everything else as well. I don't recall having a problem with the plants. Most of our plants are planted near rocks, maybe that dissuaded any uprooting. He was a phenomenal fish, I'd love to get one again. But 75g is definitely too small. By the time you add wood and rocks there just isn't much room for him to swim. I'm not running a bare-bottom abomination just to fit a fish.

Great video! I plan on putting a six Oscar colony in a 650 gallon tank. You mentioned green terrors are typically too aggressive. I know from my ears a saltwater side of things that when we get to really large tank volumes a lot of stocking rules kind of go out the window. Would that possibly be true in regards to that colony of Oscars and a green terror?
At 650 gallons - you would probably have the highest likelihood of success.

Haha. I wasn’t surprised so much that they ate them, just how small the Oscars were when they tried to eat a huge crayfish!
I'm not sure what it is about heaters that sets the aggression off in some Oscars, I've had a few over the years that took a dislike to the glass tubes haha

What light or light color are you using? The color stands out nice!
I have a very strange mix on that tank - two 36" finnex stingrays and a 48" shop light that gives off a softer/warmer (more yellow) light in the middle.

What is your thoughts on an oscar with a flowerhorn? I've had a couple haps in with my flower horn while I remodeled their tank and Pebbles ( FH) did just fine with ignoring them for the most part. He's about 5 inches and a gentle giant and I just ordered an Oscar . I have a set up to put him alone but if possible I'd like to give pebbles a budddy . thoughts ?
My guess is the flowerhorn will eventually kill the oscar?

You cannot put a few in a 90 gallon
I kept African 3 claw frogs with my two Oscars . Occasionally in when in a bad mood they would goose a frogs butt. They never hurt them though .
My large Oscar who I had to give away when pregnant as couldn't look after it properly use to get a pinki mouse once a week it was huge ... I had pet snakes so had frozen mice for the snakes that were brought frozen and I defrosted them etc 😂

I have a Polypterus (Lung Fish) with my two Oscars. I almost got a Rope Fish the other day but they were already all sold :( I would like to have a pangasius or 2 with my Oscars. Thoughts? Would that work out? I love Pangasius for their rather chilled manner of swimming up and down. I don't want that to stress or annoy my Oscars though...
The pairing would be fine. I wouldn’t keep that fish in anything less than about a 18-20ft tank. I’ve seen them get at least 4ft long and extremely round and somewhat tall - they are extremely large fish.
I have a couple growing out in a 75 gallon now. Moving them to a 210 in a few months.

I think you can for grow-out for a few months, but they grow really fast and would do better in a 6ft tank long term. Thanks for watching!
I got a hint for all of you that love keeping fish. You can save a ton of money buy feeding your fish only dried mealworms. You can buy mealworms from stock feed stores for less than 8 dollars for 3 pounds compared to pet stores ripping you off buy selling you expensive feed. Go buy the same mealworms as they sell for chickens. I have feed my fish Thees mealworms for 10 years and they are very healthy and beautiful too. I never feed live feed to my fish. Live feeder carry deseed plus it makes your fish attack everything that moves. Mealworms are very healthy for your fish and stock stores sell them cheep remember dried mealworms the same mealworms they sell for chicken feed. Your fish will love them and grow very healthy too.

Yep, sometimes I come down stairs and he's sleeping on his side looking half dead only to race around the tank two minutes later.
i have lots of thanks, and i see lots of different thinks. I have a Spar 75, would 1 oscar sit happily? or should i try a Flowerhorn?
It could probably grow out in a 75, but you would probably want to move it at some point to a larger tank.
I’m growing a few out in a 4 footer. Bit aggressive at the moment as there harassing my Saratoga lol. Can’t wait to see em get 12 inch plus

Any recommendations for something to add with my Oscar, I thought large mystery snails will be cool but the Oscar was not okay with that. I was thinking about adding my large common pleco but the tank has only sand and rocks would a piece of Beach Driftwood be okay for the common pleco? Other wood does not match the light sand in the tank...
Common plecos work, but they get so huge (18" should be pretty easy in an aquarium).Mine have always left full-grown bristlenose plecos alone, although there is no guarantee your will.
@@PrimeTimeAquatics ok thank you very much i was thinking about the geophagus* as a tank mate to help keep the sand clean. My concern for the pleco was the lack of wood in the tank and if beach drift wood is edible for the pleco. As a new fish keeper i bought a turtle , an oscar and a pleco for a 20 gallon.
I have now educated myself and have began the process of making things right. Aka Mylasian turtle in a 75g east asian themed tank , oscar and pleco in 125 sand and rock tank.

I have a 100 gallon bow front tank and and I'd really like to breed my oscar but still want some tank mates to add a little more color and activity to the tank but dont know what would be acceptable to add
Anything you add would eat oscar babies or be killed by the oscars when they form a breeding pair.
Is it possible to add a mbuna yellow lap cichlid with Oscar. I have one that I got Free from someone that seems a bit to big for my general mbuana tank.
I'm thinking of getting g into Oscars, buying a large tank a recommended amd maybe add the large mbuna with the Oscars. Maybe my convict as well with is getting bigger than the rest in current mbuna tank.
Temperament wise they can get along, but sometimes the diet can be hard to deal with.
I have a pair of oscars and the big one is pinning the smaller one in one corner once inna whiten they lip lock but other than that the big one typically just nudging the side of the small one the small one typically doesn’t come out of the corner and allows the big one free range of the tank when the nudging occurs it’s very gentle and sometimes the smaller one will shake little is this the big one seems to be obsessed with the smaller one i had the smaller one first and it was the aggressor at first but seems like the bigger one has now become the aggressor No bite marks / no fin tearing but is this .. bullying ? Or mating behavior ?

My oscars (3 between 5-7 inches) are with a blood parrot (4 inches), an arowana (12 inches), and a jaguar cichlid (6 inches). Do you think they will eventually fight? The arowana is the only fish that shows damage with a few ripped fins. They are in an outdoor 12 ft., 1,700 gallon heated pool pond. Once they grow a little more, I plan to add a redtail and maybe remove the parrot cichlid and then leave the stocking like that.
Sound like a great set-up. If I had to pick one fish in that mix to keep an eye on it would be the Jaguar cichlid. However, you have a huge space for them, and if there are some hiding spots for the oscars and jaguar it might work out. Just keep an eye on them. Would love to hear updates on the set-up as you progress!

Really considering oscars for their personalities and have a 90 gallon tank cycling. Wanting to do 1, but would 2 be pushing it? Wouldn't do anymore than that in a 90 for sure.
Ya, two might be pushing it a little. Mine are so big now I couldn’t get them in a 75 (same foot print as a 90). Hope this helps!

Does keeping three Oscars work for you? I prefer pairs because I heard they can become closer to one and outcast the third one. I just got a 125 gallon and want to get two young Oscars.
I think it did in my case because they grew up together, but you never know long term.
I just got a baby one for my 90 gallon. I also have him with a jeweled cichlid, 2 blood parrot cichlids and a green phantom pleco. I'm in the process of removing all of my nano tank set up in place of larger set ups. If there is anyone in Eastern MA who wants Free set ups with fish included let me know.
I'am getting a 100gallon soon, I was thinking of oscars, do you recommend? dimensions (72x18x18)
I think it will work for a while. As they become full grown it might get cramped. I'm thinking my 125 is not optimal, if they get bigger I may upgrade at some point!

Prime Time Aquatics my tank is 60 inches long I have two 7 inch Oscar is that ok for now about the same size as yours or Should I upgrade to a 7ft or 8 ft tank

I have one Oscar in a 60 gallon tank. I have 4 sponge filters in there. 2 large sponge and 2 small. Do you think it'll take care of my Oscar or should I get some more filteration? I do 50% water change every week.

Great video about Oscars , i had one for 3 years until he passed and i think what kill him ( i stared feeding him live fish like you said ) my family was real sad see him go , specially my wife , who he let petting on the head every day when she comes from work.
That stinks. Always hard to lose fish, especially when they have a great personality.
My Oscar pair just laid a huge clutch and I don't know what to do...! I have cichlids in my tank also and I'm sure theyll eat the fries up if the eggs survive... I don't the space nor the time to set up another tank
If you don't want to raise them just leave them alone. They will become fish food for everyone else. There isn't a very strong market for Oscar fry because they have so many fry.

It can't be that tough to get rid of additional oscar babies... One can always feed them to bigger fish as feeder... Right???

We just discovered 2 of our Oscars had babies. Thank You so much for this video. We just had to pull a Lima catfish and Pleco out. These guys were taken in as recuse pets and not planned as breeders. They sure changed the game plan tonight. lol

I have a black tiger Oscar and an albino tiger Oscar fish. Is it on to put an angel fish in the tank with them?
I’m not sure about your set-up, but with mine I think the Oscars would be too active for angels and they would probably eat all the food before the angels got any.
Love the tannins on that water. I've always liked those brownish water. Btw, I would need to move my oscar and red devil. Will you be interested in adopting any of them?
Tannins are generally great for fish (as you know). Some people don't like the look, but I don't mind it. I wish I could take your fish, but I am out of space. I have some juvenile Red Devils that were supposed to be Firemouths and I have to figure out where to put them!

I have three Oscar’s in a 55gal for a start out they are babies they like 4 inches I’m about to move to Nashville ima grab an 125Gal but I don’t see why y’all call it the red Oscar it’s called an copper Oscar I own one now I have an copper black Oscar and an lemon Oscar they all around the same age and around 4in I’ll be grabbing a 125 gal in like 2 months accurate video tho I salute

It depends on the other fish. If they are on the more aggressive side the new oscars might get bullied. If you try it I would have a back up plan just in case.

It's hard to say for sure.
I have a dozen tiger Barb's in a 75 with a 7 year old Oscar. He chased them around for the first week or so but is more of an ambush predator, he gave up after that.

How do you take care of water circulation with just sponge filters?
They do an adequate job on their own.
Since this is an old video idk if ill get a response but could I keep an Oscar pair in an overfiltered 90 gallon long term or is that too small?
I prefer a 6ft tank long term.

I prefer to have some type of substrate in all my tanks.
I have a 75 with a baby Oscar a female jack and 5 giant danios and I was going to add some yo yo loaches and a bristlnose pleco the female jack will only get 4 to 5 inches and the yo yo loaches will get 4 to 5 inches as well is that okey do you think I have a lot of filtration in the tank
I think for now you will probably be ok - you may have to upgrade the tank size for the oscar as it grows larger.

I have a 150g tank with 3 oscars and 1 Bala shark. Well a year later my oscars are playing the mating game. I never intended them to breed nor really want them too. But I don’t want my 3rd wheel Oscar or my beautiful bala to get hurt. Should I take them out of the tank if babies are laid? Or can I leave them in there and maybe the mating pair will leave them alone?
Good question! Once they start breeding the other fish in the tank may take a beating. You may have to remove the others if you want to raise the fry. Keep in mind you may have a LOT of fry. : -)
Prime Time Aquatics I don’t want fry. Lol I never put any flat rocks in there or anything so they would be comfortable enough to mate. Lol they just moved all the rocks to the bottom of the tank. but I don’t want my bala to get hurt. the oscars have never picked on her but I know how mating season goes in the animal world

I feel bad now because I was going to put a single Oscar in a 75 gallon but you say that’s pushing the limits and I know I’m not going to get a bigger tank than 75 so looks like I have to rehome this little guy he still about 5 inches
He'll be ok in there for a little while. If he is the only one in the tank you might have a decent amount of time before you have to do anything!

Help. I have two oscars but can’t tell if they are male or female they are full size about 12 in long. Had them about 3 years. But they have never had babies. They do every thing that a male and female would do. But no eggs. ..any ideas ..?!
The only way I can tell them apart is when they start breeding, based on which fish is laying the eggs. : -)
My Albino oscar was attacked by my 2 tiger oscars in their tank, we had to separate the albino by placing a divide. I am in firm belief that the 2 tigers have coupled off as they get on with no issues, i did read if there are females in the group the males will beat off other males. So maybe the Albino is also a male.
That could very well be the case.
I miss my Oscars. When I put my hand in the tank for maintenance they would swim into my hand so I'd rub them.
Mine never seem to care about me doing tank maintenance either. Sometimes I have to gently move them out of the way when gravel vac-ing.
