    Please don't let our awful music track distract from the great things Jordan is doing at Valiant Trailers. When we made this video we had selected an ambient track for the transitions with no beat and no guitar. Unfortunately during the edit we forgot to change the placeholder music. Lesson learned, ALWAYS proof the video before uploading to UA-cam because once it is up you can never go back. Again, Jordan and Valiant had no part in this edit, just a mistake by yours truly "Playing with Sticks."

    I really like the back door opening up and acting as an awning. A few teardrops are made to provide a little bit of cover when the back hatch is opened, but this one does it perfectly.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  4 роки тому +1

      We completely agree. We haven't talked about it in any videos yet, but our galley door is probably the feature of our teardrop that drives us the most crazy. It is way too heavy, so small it doesn't protect us from the elements, and so high it makes putting a tent over it difficult. We often say we are going to put gas springs on ours, which would be really nice. But, we still haven't got around to it. If we were to build a teardrop or purchase one we would definitely create a pass through in the galley from interior to the exterior. There are so many times May and I wish we could just pass items to each other from the back to the inside. We use our galley more for storage than food prep. It would be so great to just quickly move those items from the galley to the bed when we hit camp. Back to your comment Mike. In person that back door is really large. Our family could definitely huddle together under it at night with chairs and be completely protected from the elements.

    • @mikemead2315
      @mikemead2315 4 роки тому +1

      Playing with Sticks, Yes, agreed - a pass through! Good one!

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 4 роки тому

      This isn't strictly speaking a "teardrop." The ORIGINAL idea was a very small, light, aerodynamic camper trailer that could be towed by a passenger car. The shape was part of what made it (more) towable by vehicles not strictly built as tow vehicles. Installing an outdoor galley in the rear made great use of that rounded back. The square back, with either top hinges or bottom hinges (for a RAMP!), is standard cargo-trailer stuff.
      You might be surprised at all the cargo-trailer companies who'll custom-build a toy hauler for you to your specifications. These also make excellent toy haulers. Roll out your snowmobile, dirt bike(s), 4-wheeler and that space becomes your sleep area.
      A lot of people are turning small (and large!) cargo haulers into DIY campers and toy haulers.
      There's a huge market of 4x4 owners, who don't need something tiny (and un-insulated) like the standard teardrops (Vistabule, etc.), and want something that can go anywhere they can take their 4x4s, and, as so much of the market is from the high country, you're seeing more and more companies like the one featured in the videos, who insulate them for winter camping. Small as they are, and insulated as they are, you could probably just crack the roof vent, hang a lantern, and be plenty warm in one in the middle of winter.
      The "teardrop" basic idea of small, very basic, very effective camping trailer that's CHEAP has expanded hugely in the last decade or so. They're more affordable and more rugged than the standard camper trailers, and with the Timbren suspension, very rough-and-tumble, which is what a lot of hunters and trekkers want.

    Hello from Down Under, this is a very thoughtful design, we really like that suspension type and the lift open back panel ask now for an extra annex to zipping it on to have some privacy while having a shower and it could even be good having while doing the cooking to keep the nosy insects out of the pots. Well done mate!

  • @james_robnett
    @james_robnett 4 роки тому +15

    Nice, when you were talking about how light and easy it was to move, my thought was, weight doesn't matter, balance over the wheels matters. Shortly there after 5:30 you explain the balance. Really nice design.

      @ReimerKeith 4 роки тому

      There doesn't seem to be enough tongue weight. He lifts it up with one arm. Limited storage up front, so add a loaded fridge and kitchen pantry to the rear, and it could be even lighter.

    • @harrymills2770
      @harrymills2770 4 роки тому

      Just keep in mind that the center of mass changes, depending on what you stick in the thing. Most people will end up loading theirs with a bunch of cargo for the travel part. I think I'd keep it mostly empty, because part of the appeal is being able to just pull over and grab some z's without any fuss or muss.

Then after getting to know them we were really surprised to find out that not only do they make some of the best trailers around, they are much cheaper then any trailer we have found in that quality range. They are starting to get a lot of interest from the lower 48, which is really exciting to hear. After doing this walkthrough and taking one out on a -20 degree day, we see why! As for the boondocking, once you start you will never go back! We truly love it. I would say 90% of our adventures are boondocking, I think 90% of our videos on here are boondocking as well.

    I’m not a teardrop guy, but I like that trailer. Wish the industry would make the move to single-burner cooktops. Less cost, more counter space, and more practical, period. People rarely use two, let alone 3 burners. (I personally went liquid fuel Trangia years ago so I’d opt for a delete.) Plus, that galley layout is begging for a small upright 12v fridge. Also, for those of us east of Denver, air-conditioning is a must have. Would’ve liked to see their solution for that.

    I like the taller design of this camper. I've interviewed dozens of companies and that is something most dont do. Tall ceilings. I know of only 2 other companies that make an off road tear drop that you can sit like a bench inside. Now if you had a micro bunkhouse model....thatvwould be an industry 1st! Us guys with 3 small kids are limited if not forgotten. All these off road campers are built for couples and not families. I get why....it just sucks lol.

    • @PlayingwithSticks
      @PlayingwithSticks  4 роки тому +1

      Good to see you on here! It was the tall design that really impressed us as well. Before heading out to see the trailer the photos Jordan sent us looked just like a regular size offroad teardrop. But once I saw it in person, I thought to myself everyone is going to want one of these when these see it being towed down the highway. Love all your walkthroughs and interviews by the way, we haven't missed any (even your tactical videos are fun and we aren't even really into that scene). Do you happen to remember the names of those 2 companies that make the higher offroad teardrops? We like to have an idea of comparable teardrops when talking with folks in the comment section of our videos. My wife and I have been talking about the micro bunkhouse for a couple of years. Our family isn't ready and probably will never be ready to move into a full blown travel trailer. We still want our teardrop, which now puts us into the teardrop and rooftop tent category. But, man it would be fun to cram us all into the interior. We aren't one's to shy away from a cozy den with our little ones. We are predicting that as families continue to get into smaller and smaller trailers here in the States that some smaller models with bunks will start popping up. But, maybe that is just us being hopeful. As for the overland expo question are you talking Valiant and their trailers or us with Playing with Sticks?

      As this was shot quite a while ago a lot has changed since then. AGM is still more affordable and performs better in extreme cold weather. However, since this video was made lithium has greatly went down in price with all the competition, and many of the good brands now have built in heating. So basically AGM is only a battery we recommend for price and cold weather performance. Other than that lithium beats it on every other front.

Before having children we used to do short tours throughout SE Asia. They are some of our fondest memories. Now, just waiting for the kids to get a little older so we can start touring around our home state. As for AC it would definitely be feasible with Jordan. Because Valiant is a smaller operation, every order is custom made. Basically if the client can dream it, they can build it. I will shoot him an email to see if he has ever priced an AC for his trailers. If he hasn't yet, I guarantee someone else will be asking about it soon. Thanks for the great question Dan. Hope to get back to you sooner than later.

    This trailer is very nice. I am wondering if the door can be bigger and the color of interior can be change or not?

      Yes, they can add a larger door for easier access. As for the interior they can make it any way you like it. Pretty neat being able to work for a company who can basically customize every inch of your trailer.

      @@PlayingwithSticks That is awesome that you can customize the interior. I would definitely check it out. Thank you so much for the respond.

    Will a 2021 v6 4runner pull/tow this with no problem? I live in Washington state with mountains and mountains are where I camp primarily.

    At 13:10 what is the place?

      Isn't that gorgeous. Unfortunately I can't tell you because too many people would override the place! Just kidding. It is right there where the glacier starts pouring into the Knik. If you are not familiar with the area basically you drive along the north side of the Knik river for a majority of the trip and once you hit the headwaters of the Knik there you will find an amazing glacial playground known as the Knik glacier.

    Is there any room for standing and changing inside when the bed is not folded up?
