The Lick-step

- Lockstep is a game about mastering the offbeat. But what if that song kept getting more swung as it progressed? Enter "The Lick-step", where the offbeats slowly get more swung until it aligns to the next beat.
The song used is called "'The Lick' but it becomes increasingly swung" by Aaron Breeze.
Visuals and explanation:
• "The Lick" but it gets...
Song only:
• 'The Lick' but it beco...
The ratios you see in this video were taken from one of the comments in the original video. Said comment may not be correct with some values according to the commenter, but I went ahead and used those values anyways.

Nice pfp :)
this is the audio equivalent to that moment when the pencil wood covers the actual pencil tip after sharpening it
@@kawaiipython LOL
this is like the song equivalent of being an adult and swinging on swingset at a playground, you end up swinging waaaaaay too far
swinging at swing tempo on a swing sounds fun

that gave me an idea: there should be a swing themed rhythm heaven minigame with a swing tempo

you ever swing so hard you turn the offbeat into the onbeat
"Swing ratio : 1:0"
*YOU'VE BROKEN MATHS BRADY STOP THAT*
Oh goodness I love that quote
Div by 0 error
@@clonefighter1996 To be completely fair, the ":" sign usually doesn't represent the ratio between two quantities, but actually the proportion between two quantities and their sum. 1/10 means that for every 1 you add to one, you add 10 to the other. 1:10 means that for every 11 you add in total, 1 is added to the first and 10 is added to the second. a:b = a/(a+b). In this case the "ratio" 1:0 isn't actually a division by 0, it just means 1/1=1.
But it's funnier to say it's a division by 0.
@@givrally7634 Well in my school : represented division (aside from the usual / as the fraction separator, so 1:3 was the same as 1/3)
@@clonefighter1996 That's... true, I forgot lower level math still doesn't make that difference.
its all fun and games until you have to switch to the onbeat at 127:1
257
by that point, the difference from onbeat is probably already so slight that you can just keep hitting the onbeat and it'll be within the timing margin
@@wankadool2111 Problem: When switching, you have to hit the swing beat, and then the onbeat.
@@radomiami if your input lands in the timing margin of multiple separate hits then the input counts for all of them
As someone with only surface level knowledge of music theory this melted my brain
Every few seconds it sounds different, but also like it never changed
@Gibbon someone’s gotta be brave enough to try
I
am having a crisis
WHAT DO YOU MEAN DIFFERENT
lockstep but you slowly start to think that something isn't right
this is a masterpiece in the psychological horror genre
I think I just had an existential crisis. I was so used to the off-beats and the pain it gave me that I didn't think it would ever switch, so when it did I straight-up screamed
Lockstep but it's unlocked
i think lockstep means marching in unison or something like that so there's no lock thingy :u
@@chirnosans Lock thingy heh.
Someone just had the metronome set slightly slow

Thanks for teaching me exactly what swing is without a single explanation
So offbeat that it became onbeat again. Why
The more you listen to it, the more insane you get when you realize it.
completely unrelated but i just found out that if you kinda let your eyes unfocus and cross slightly while looking at the lockstep visual it actually creates a 3D image effect. its fucking with me
Look up stereoscopy when you get the chance. It's basically the phenomenon you're describing. Used by looking cross-eyed at two slightly offset images, you can give an illusion of 3D depth in the resulting image.
I believe this is what we in the business call a "mindfuck"
fr tho i need a lockstep wallpaper like this that moves in sync with any music😩
I'm not sure how you'd even make this but someone should at least try
"Today is all about offbeats, and swing beats! The swing will slowly change until it goes full circle! Hope you can keep up the beat, even without practice !"
The build-up at 9:5 swing as if it's building up to the switch to regular 2:1 swing, followed by the subversion of expectations as it switches to 83:45 instead (why would you need such a specific swing ratio what the hell) is perfectly executed. good job, that made me laugh
Go ask Aaron breeze, they're the one who made this abomination of a sound
I really am tone-deaf because I can't see or hear any difference between the beginning and end
Say we separate the song by a measure each (either 8 or 16 beats, I dunno). As the song continues, the offbeat begins to slowly go offsync until it starts landing on the exact same time as its next beat, so the 2nd beat plays simultaneously with the 3rd. This notion is repeated with the piano at the end.
I think it's something that's better played than watched. It's the kind of drift where I'm pretty sure we'd end up more desynced than we think
i feel like at some point you just get to the offbeat and it's not even swung it's just the offbeat
edit: i see. that is exactly what happened.

For switching in 1:0, would you need to just keep playing the same rhythm or press A twice at the exact same time
asking the real questions
@IndigoBlocky by bending your finger through the 4th dimension to merge 2 points in time together
@IndigoBlocky I don’t know, maybe ask google?
In Megamix you can use the D-Pad I addition to A. You'd probably have to press both at the same time

the fact that switching back to on-beat at the end doesnt change anything is probably the worst part
Lockstep 3
It starts sounding like completely different songs!
I was on a Discord call with 2 other friends and the friend sharing their screen had to BRB so they put the original video on and left it on loop for me and the other friend to suffer through. It was awful.
This is a perfect example of "I don't understand anything going on but completely understand it at the same time"
Everyone's a gangster until the 86:19 swing ratio hits
I don't even really know what I'm watching
Basically its slowly changing where a beat hits until its a swing beat then offbeat then swing beat then back to on beat and showing it through it doesnt feel all that different
I love how I instantly recognized the lick playing lmao
I wonder where does those crazy numbers like 86:19 come from.
This is only me guessing, but I think that specific ratio means that 19/86ths (or 22.093023255%) of the beat is taken up by the offbeat.
@@NunofYerbizness Yeah I guess so too- I'm just guessing 'why 22.0930 something when we have some more nice ratio'
well, that just means that was the most simplified that ratio could get. It’s the same with some fractions, 13/97 doesn’t look pretty, but it’s an important value (I’m sure it’s important somewhere) and that’s as simple as it gets
86/105 for the first half of the beat, and 19/105 for the second half of the beat.
@@lime.person Well I'm almost sure I know that - I'm wondering why it had to be 86 and 19 (as I commented).
Thank you EpicHaxGuy, very cool!
It’s everything I hoped for
Lockstep swing go brrrrrrrrrrrr
At around 11:1 swing ratio the offbeats became onbeats
Mom come pick me up I'm scared.
The numbers, EpicHaxGuy! What do they mean!?
this video is a constant cycle of my ears being melted and my ears aujusting to the swing to make it sound better, only to be ruined by a slightly different swing, which in turn makes my ears bleed again
I think some of the melodies here are references to jazz themes but I don't know. I think I heard Giant Steps somewhere but that's all I can gather with what little knowledge I have.

@@edward9487 at this point I feel like I might be aswell, to me this just seems like a drum beat to keep the swing consistent
