Superman himself, Brandon Routh (Superman Returns, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow) returns to the podcast this week to expand on his last interview, dive deeper into his thoughts on playing the Man of Steel , and share his surprising experiences over the last couple years.
Brandon opens up more about his return as Superman in DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and what that moment of putting the suit back on meant to him.

I'm commenting on this seven months later, but still... Mike, you are were a MUCH better Lex Luthor than Kevin Spacey, and hopefully are a better human as well. And while there were a lot of aspects to Superman Returns I liked, it didn't work altogether. Brandon did a good job, and the suit was awesome, but Tom should've fulfilled his destiny.
I have to say, you are 100% correct, Brandon, about them having you leave be a wrong decision. Ray Palmer was my favorite character left on the show and one of my top in all the Arrowverse. We all want you back and feel it was a terrible decision on their part that made no sense at all. We've got your back. ✊🏻

Brandon Routh is awesome, down to earth, humble and always having a positive vibe. I will say when he plays a misunderstood character (villain in some ways) he brings conviction to the performance. I feel Chuck tv series was one of the most underrated performances in my opinion. I even loved his voice over performance in The Batman when he voiced Everywhere Man which I felt was very touching, poignant etc. Seriously we need a Kingdom Come Superman spin-off series.

His performance in Chuck was pretty remarkable. It irritated me so much how jerk of a villain character was shaw. I guess that's called good acting.

Brandon deserves recognition for being the first really to successfully pull off the iconic role of Superman/Clark Kent after the tough to follow and cherished always Christopher Reeve. Love these podcasts, and wonder if Michael Rosenbaum's podcast would transfer well to a Comicon/Fan Expo panel ..I would go see that for sure
I enjoyed Superman Returns. Brandon did a great job carrying the torch for Christopher Reeve. The movie had an issue here or there, but Brandon wasn't one of them. It's just not the best idea to have Superman do nothing but lift things for 2 hours. Of course, then they overcorrected with Man Of Steel and went so action heavy you couldn't tell what was happening on screen most of the 3rd act. There's an equilibrium to be found there. But how about a Brandon Routh Superman fighting a Michael Rosenbaum Lex Luthor. I'm here for it. Do it. Do it.
Yep. Brandon Routh's star faded before it shone. My wife's favorite Superman is still Christopher Reeve but she claims Brandon Routh as a close second because of he has the same inner light.
I'm thinking bc Smallville series was airing as well in the same time Superman returns aired, that that was the reason the movie wasn't so brilliant, but I've just seen it a few weeks ago and for me the movie was good, I like it

Brandon to Superman is like Andrew Garfield to Spider-Man.
He's the middle guy, who kinda got the short end of the stick..and ppl wanna see him getting another chance and some kinda pay off in the end.
And in both cases, I do think the script and the directors WERE the cause of the problems of each movie.
I think it was the executives that caused problems for both
I seriously hope the Kingdom Come Superman on HBO+ rumor is true with Brandon Routh I would watch the hell out of it. And if they could find a way to fit in Kevin Conroy as Batman/Bruce Wayne that would be the icing on the cake. Kevin deserved so much better than what he got in that CW crossover. He deserves a second chance. I can see Kevin and Brandon in that doing really well.

Also Brandon was even good in those two Hallmark Christmas movies he has made.

This was such a joy to listen to. Brandon always comes across as a genuine great person with no ego. If there was ever someone who truly embodies the best of humanity like Superman, Brandon is that guy. Nothing but good stories about him from everyone that has been around him. Here's hoping he gets to reprise Superman again (his comments leave me optimistic).

Superman Returns: A vastly under-appreciated masterpiece. Loved Routh's performance, and the love letter to Reeve this movie really was intended to be. Had Rosenbaum played Lex Luthor...yeah, kinda weird with Tom not playing Superman, but still - Sorry Michael, you're the better Lex. Deal with it : )

REALLY really want them to develop an HBOmax Superman series with Brandon Routh as the Man Of Steel. He was great every time he put on the cape. Returns disappointing returns had nothing to do with him, it was the script and direction, his performance was great. And his Kingdom Come Superman - perfection.
I really like how he doesn't seem pressured to make others think the way he does, I believe that shows a profound faith in the universe.

This was such a great episode, he definitely opened up. I agree with him about teaching kids conflict resolution. It is also important to have boundaries and to bring positive vibes. His son did a great job on the sock puppets. I throughly enjoyed part 2.

I like that Brandon was able to talk around him getting boot off Legend. I was almost fired once and quit before it happened and 6 months later my boss was fired…. I was so happy. Karma is a great tool.
I firmly believe to this day that Brandon was a fantastic Superman and that was only reinforced by his role in Crisis. The script for Returns was absolute garbage but Brandon did his absolute best with it.

not clear why Rosenbaum isnt called to play lex. in all the polls ive seen its between him and Gene Hackman and he wins most of the time for the live action versions. with the multiverse concept going on, it should be a no-brainer. Rosenbaum is the best ive seen so far.

Originally The Ray Palmer character that first debuted in Arrow was supposed to have been Ted Kord The Blue Beetle but due to some rights issue they changed it to Ray Palmer leading to him crossing over to The Flash guest starring leading to Legends of Tomorrow.
I don't usually watch or listen to this sort of thing but I love it and I'm a big fan of your version of Lex luthor.

Despite the ratings, Brandon portrayed a really decent Superman back then. Very much down to earth, I wish he will be getting nice follow up in his career.
Brandon's performance as Doug Stanton on the Rookie was chilling, because it really made you stop and think about a law enforcement officer actually being like that.
Kudos for taking on that role and really making it believable and eye opening.

I have to disagree with Michael. He was great as Lex in Smallville but WB are under no obligation to bring actors, who have played a character previously, in to read for the same part on a completely different project. I get the respect thing but ultimately what purpose does it serve? It takes time away from another actor trying to audition for the role. Characters are intellectual property. Whoever owns the rights can cast at their discretion.
It's Superman week (but it's still Lex Luthor's show) on Inside Of You! Was awesome seeing Brandon play Superman again on the Crisis crossover, hope it isn't the last time. Now you just need Tyler Hoechlin for the Man of Steel hat trick.

A great addition to the Superman/Clark/Kal-El pantheon. I always like his take on the character - sometimes he sounds so much like Christopher Reeve it makes me tear up a bit.

Anyway... on topic: A movie takes years to develop, so even if they started tomorrow, it'd be a few years away, so who knows what Hoechlin's schedule would be or they could just have him be a smaller part/cameo. A movie with all the Superman actors is wishful thinking at best, so if it's just a dream, then I'd love to see as many Superman actors in it as possible!
@@livingarrows Tyler is the lead on a CW show, a Superman Cw show they’re guaranteed 6 seasons at least. He won’t have the time to commit to a large role, he’s already had to turn down just crossing over with other shows cause of scheduling. I think a cameo would be more doable.

It's very unfair the way that Brandon Routh and his portrayal of Superman was judged, I personally thought he played the character very well, the characterization was perfect, the only problem was the script that focused on telling about lois and her life after clark's disappearance, and lex luthor's life, than on superman himself, the problem it wasn't Brandon's performance, but the script that was confusing and unfocused on the main character.

Brandon and Henry can't compete vs Christopher Reeve. He is and will be the only one Superman, and Tom Welling will always be the young Clark. Rosenbaum is the only one young Lex Luthor and Glover for Lionel. For older Lex I guess Gene Hackman's performance can't be beaten.

I'll always going to know him(Brandon) as Superman, Brandon was and still is my favorite actor to take that role after Christopher Reeve. I was also waiting and they left me waiting for Superman sequels with Brandon in it and not the new guy. Nothing against Henry Cavill.
Love this guy ever since Superman Returns, he was the perfect Superman, him and Christopher Reeve. Cavill is good too, but he just doesn't look tall or perfect enough, he looks masculine though.

Another great episode. So glad to hear my favourite Arrowverse actor (Routh) gets on well with my favourite superhero actor (Welling) but they both seem like such nice guys that I wouldn't expect anything else. It's a shame Brandon got a raw deal with his Superman role but was a fantastic Ray Palmer/Atom.
Brandon is so nice. I've liked him in the Hallmark movies I've seen him in; I was kind of hoping he'd talk more about that sequel he noted his son was a part of ;) I found I could relate the the topic of getting along with people and how sometimes egos and such can get in the way. It made me think of some of my relationships and the struggles I have to get along with certain individuals. That whole conversation was enlightening. Again, I enjoyed this interview with Brandon and getting to hear more from/about him. Awesome. Happy new year!

Great podcast as always. I enjoy Brandon Routh and really loved Superman Returns. He really had the Clark/Superman thing down. His rendition was so close to Christopher Reeves portrayal. I enjoy all of his work and was the main reason I watched Legends.

I love what you said about respecting the legacy that comes with the characters for considerations even if going in another direction, thinking on that note isn't your Superman who is a continuation of Reeves movies the Superman of the Batman 89 universe too? So it would be so absolutely amazing if they have your Superman interacting with Keaton while he leads a new team of heroes that would be EVERYTHING.....Also you and Courtney need to come back to Legends it's not the same without your energy in it!

Would love to see Brandon get the respect he deserves as Superman. Imo he was the highlight of the Crisis crossover but was underutilised. He deserves a series on hbo max as Earth 96 Superman.

He is amazing, I've been a huge fan since Supes returns. I thought he did such a terrific job on The Rookie. It's just a shame, the character was a POS. As far as Legends, he's not on full-time. I refuse to watch it, they did him dirty, his wife too, for that fact.
