What I don't understand is Asheville being in a higher altitude and more altitude than say Raleigh, how can it get flooded??? I mean seriously where did that water come from? Which river? I thought low lying areas got flooded. How did those roads get destroyed? Can an expert please educate me
@@mohanish , it’s in the valley between the mountains. All that rain too quickly, plus it had rained many days before, leading to really wet ground. Wet ground plus that much rain causes floods and landslides. Everything from the top of the mountains comes down to the valley, no where else to go. (I am in the Virginia Mountains, not sure which rivers they are dealing with.)
Asheville, NC resident here. Yes, it's really as bad as it looks. No power, no cell service, no wifi, no water, no road access in or out for an enormous amount of people. Fortunately I live off one of very few roads in the county that maintained power. Our water is out though. Authorities say will be weeks before power and water is fully back. I drove around after the storm and some water had receded. Absolutely devastating. FEMA, National Guard, agencies from 19 states, even Canadian services vehicles are here trying to help. Thank you to those who risk their lives daily to save others in this catastrophe no one imagined possible in our beautiful mountain city.😢
I’m in tears. My daughter is there. She lives alone and although her apartment didn’t get flooded, she’s traumatized. She can’t get supplies because of the atms down and cash only. But a friend gave her some gas and she got to Charlotte for a couple of days and is coming back tomorrow. Prayers for all
We had Cyclone Gabriel in New Zealand in 2023 and it flooded the Esk River Valley the same as this, fortunately our population is much smaller but the damage is absolutely similar. River valleys the water has no where to go it just washes everything out. Wishing you the best from New Zealand and your recovery ❤️🩹

I have been there. You just pick up one piece at a time and keep doing it. Once you start it gets easier each day. That first step is always the hardest, but it is absolutely necessary to take it. Remember even a small step is forward progress.

The roads that are a total loss are the worst. We don't have that problem in Florida. But when a river can eat miles of a road away and leave what looks like a 20 foot dropoff right next to a mountain... How do you replace that road. And Im retired from road construction.

No you get heavy equipment out there you clean up all the mud push it out of the way and you start rebuilding if our government would quit being worried about other countries we could afford to rebuild with no problem

I was just there in August. It's such a unique and beautiful place. The variety of small shops, the music on the streets, the diverse food options and the beauty of seeing the mountains at overlook spots. It's heartbreaking to see it look like this. I hope Asheville gets all the support and resources it needs for the people and to rebuild.

In Florida we don't have the roads on hills that are completely gone. The people in the upper states have it worse off . How do you fill in roads that are completely gone in a hillside. And these are only a few pictures of the total destruction.
I’m from one of those small towns in Florida. We are still without power, and trees are down everywhere, or either split and hung up in other trees. Thankfully our home is still standing. This storm was just a nightmare (that won’t end for a long time!) for so many people.

Do you know that your Governor recently codified (made legal) the "10 Commandments" (which is spiritual bondage) for all the children in your State who are attending Public Schools. Congress needs to reallocate the Build Back Better money some $3 trillion dollars to use in this building back that has not been used or contracted. The EV mandate of Biden needs to be scrapped and leftover money from that boondoggle needs to be applied to these projects.

It's hard to fathom a hurricane doing that much damage so far inland. When I left Calif. I had two places I wanted to move to - Asheville or back to my home state of Indiana. Glad I chose Indiana now. It will be years before they recover from this.

I just visited the Biltmore last weekend and drive through these places. It was sunny, beautiful and 85 degrees. It’s crazy to see what happened and think about being there less than a week ago. I wouldn’t have imagined this happening.

I lived through Katrina and lived at the superdome for months during the aftermath. I know exactly how it is and how it feels. seeing bodies float down the street or on top of roofs. it was horrible. 1400 people died from Katrina. hope the count isn't that high with Helene.

I live in Asheville, yes the cell service is down big time. I’m only able to message this from a city two hours away, in charlotte. We’re talking power loss, water loss, gas is about to be lost, and service/communication loss. It’s pretty wild stuff.
I just watched a report on PBS. They interviewed a reporter, (I think an NPR stringer) who is in Ashville. She sounds like she is in touch w your local authorities. She said cell service is starting to come back online. But public water might be weeks away.

Wow, we have visited Lake Lure and Chimney Rock dozens of times. We have toured Biltmore many times. Over the last 30+ years. I have never ever seen the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers so flooded. Prayers for folks. It will a long time t recover from all the damage.
This is reminiscent of what happened in Lahaina Hawaii. All of sudden you have prime real-estate available to be bought up for cheap. This is 400 miles inland from where it hit.
My sister and husband live in Clyde. Their home is situated on very high ground so they are safe from flooding. They have all electric home. No electricity since 3 a m Friday. They prepared and have a generator so they have not lost their food. They are on a well but without electricity they can’t get water. Clyde suffered extensive damage. A beautiful community and the people are helping each other. So sad for this beautiful state.
It's never wise to build your house too close to a river. It's not even very wise to build it (home) on a beach front. Tsunamis, storm surge , those things are dangerous.
We must not let this catastrophe leave us unchanged. We must demand change from our lawmakers to work against global warming. If not, I fear that these situations will become the norm.
I've been through too many hurricanes like this and worse but when I see other people dealing with it, it pains my heart for them. Well, if you live in the panhandle... I feel bad for you guys. The panhandle is like a magnet for hurricanes. I live less than 20 miles from Crystal River. Crystal River has never been directly hit by a hurricane on record. But suffers significant flooding from storm surge every time a hurricane goes by up to you guys. I barely got any wind or heavy rain. Citrus County never had a direct hit on record from a hurricane. I feel very lucky because it can happen any year.

I live about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. You never get used to hurricanes. We've had a few here which I guess is expected but I've never seen anything like what happened there. Those folks probably never imagined a hurricane like that there in their wildest dreams .

afte watching several video, it seems like the major problem in this hurricane was the flood and not winds . trees kept their leaves and branches.. 11 months ago we were hit by hurricane Otis here in Acapulco, and all tree lost their foliage including the forest that sorround the city. While you were getting hit by Helene we were hit by John, weak winds buy MASSIVE amount of water, historical. In the aftermath of Helene, benefit from my misfortune and do not compound your problems: beware of an outfit called “Samaritan’s Purse’. These people showed up in my neighborhood in NJ after Superstorm Sandy offering to help. I was away at the time and my wife let them in. The end result was over $10,000 in property stolen over a couple day period. SP disclaimed any liability and said they really didn’t do any background on their volunteers and didn’t even have records of who they were. So proceed accordingly
The flag of resilience still stands @ 3:13 🫡 and if I was still stationed in North Carolina I would be driving up from Jacksonville to Asheville to help with clean up efforts and support the best I could. I remember the crazy flooding from Hurricane Florence back in 2018 that tore up the coastal towns of NC.

@@mohanish , it’s in the valley between the mountains. All that rain too quickly, plus it had rained many days before, leading to really wet ground. Wet ground plus that much rain causes floods and landslides. Everything from the top of the mountains comes down to the valley, no where else to go. (I am in the Virginia Mountains, not sure which rivers they are dealing with.)

Asheville, NC resident here. Yes, it's really as bad as it looks. No power, no cell service, no wifi, no water, no road access in or out for an enormous amount of people. Fortunately I live off one of very few roads in the county that maintained power. Our water is out though. Authorities say will be weeks before power and water is fully back. I drove around after the storm and some water had receded. Absolutely devastating. FEMA, National Guard, agencies from 19 states, even Canadian services vehicles are here trying to help. Thank you to those who risk their lives daily to save others in this catastrophe no one imagined possible in our beautiful mountain city.😢
I’m in tears. My daughter is there. She lives alone and although her apartment didn’t get flooded, she’s traumatized. She can’t get supplies because of the atms down and cash only. But a friend gave her some gas and she got to Charlotte for a couple of days and is coming back tomorrow. Prayers for all

We had Cyclone Gabriel in New Zealand in 2023 and it flooded the Esk River Valley the same as this, fortunately our population is much smaller but the damage is absolutely similar. The roads that are a total loss are the worst. We don't have that problem in Florida. But when a river can eat miles of a road away and leave what looks like a 20 foot dropoff right next to a mountain... How do you replace that road. And Im retired from road construction.

I was just there in August. It's such a unique and beautiful place. The variety of small shops, the music on the streets, the diverse food options and the beauty of seeing the mountains at overlook spots. It's heartbreaking to see it look like this. I hope Asheville gets all the support and resources it needs for the people and to rebuild.

I’m from one of those small towns in Florida. We are still without power, and trees are down everywhere, or either split and hung up in other trees. Thankfully our home is still standing. This storm was just a nightmare (that won’t end for a long time!) for so many people.

At least they muted the video about donating to the Red Cross because of the overwhelming response in the comments of how little, if any of the money or help the Red Cross actually gives, is received from the intended donation. Find a local charity, group, or organization that you can verify that gives all proceeds to those in need.

It's hard to fathom a hurricane doing that much damage so far inland. When I left Calif. I had two places I wanted to move to - Asheville or back to my home state of Indiana. Glad I chose Indiana now. It will be years before they recover from this.

I just visited the Biltmore last weekend and drive through these places. It was sunny, beautiful and 85 degrees. It’s crazy to see what happened and think about being there less than a week ago. I wouldn’t have imagined this happening.

I live in Asheville, yes the cell service is down big time. I’m only able to message this from a city two hours away, in charlotte. We’re talking power loss, water loss, gas is about to be lost, and service/communication loss. It’s pretty wild stuff.
I just watched a report on PBS. They interviewed a reporter, (I think an NPR stringer) who is in Ashville. She sounds like she is in touch w your local authorities. She said cell service is starting to come back online. But public water might be weeks away.
You dont have to go to Charlotte. Brevard has lower and cell service. The grocery store is about out of food.

Wow, we have visited Lake Lure and Chimney Rock dozens of times. We have toured Biltmore many times. Over the last 30+ years. I have never ever seen the Swannanoa and French Broad rivers so flooded. Prayers for folks. It will a long time t recover from all the damage.

My sister and husband live in Clyde. Their home is situated on very high ground so they are safe from flooding. They have all electric home. No electricity since 3 a m Friday. They prepared and have a generator so they have not lost their food. They are on a well but without electricity they can’t get water. Clyde suffered extensive damage. A beautiful community and the people are helping each other. So sad for this beautiful state.
It's never wise to build your house too close to a river. It's not even very wise to build it (home) on a beach front. Tsunamis, storm surge , those things are dangerous.

Well, if you live in the panhandle... I feel bad for you guys. The panhandle is like a magnet for hurricanes. I live less than 20 miles from Crystal River. Crystal River has never been directly hit by a hurricane on record. But suffers significant flooding from storm surge every time a hurricane goes by up to you guys. I barely got any wind or heavy rain. Citrus County never had a direct hit on record from a hurricane. I feel very lucky because it can happen any year.
I drove semi trucks across Georgia and Carolinas and seeing trailers in such conditions is completely devastating and destructive

I live about 30 miles inland from the Gulf of Mexico in Texas. You never get used to hurricanes. We've had a few here which I guess is expected but I've never seen anything like what happened there. Those folks probably never imagined a hurricane like that there in their wildest dreams .

For everyone affected by the horrible hurricane Helene. Praise God our house in Tallahassee had no damage. Praying for all who lost loved ones or houses. Houses can be replaced sadly people cannot.
afte watching several video, it seems like the major problem in this hurricane was the flood and not winds . trees kept their leaves and branches.. 11 months ago we were hit by hurricane Otis here in Acapulco, and all tree lost their foliage including the forest that sorround the city.
While you were getting hit by Helene we were hit by John, weak winds buy MASSIVE amount of water, historical. Now it seems we Florida and Acapulco,are gonna get hit again this week by another hurricane🥲 .

In the aftermath of Helene, benefit from my misfortune and do not compound your problems: beware of an outfit called “Samaritan’s Purse’. These people showed up in my neighborhood in NJ after Superstorm Sandy offering to help. I was away at the time and my wife let them in. The end result was over $10,000 in property stolen over a couple day period. SP disclaimed any liability and said they really didn’t do any background on their volunteers and didn’t even have records of who they were. So proceed accordingly
The flag of resilience still stands @ 3:13 🫡 and if I was still stationed in North Carolina I would be driving up from Jacksonville to Asheville to help with clean up efforts and support the best I could. I remember the crazy flooding from Hurricane Florence back in 2018 that tore up the coastal towns of NC.
So sad...one are the most beautiful parts of the Appalachias
