@@familybroich3073 it's way easier to get fat as an adult. Children and teenagers usually have killer metabolism and tend to be naturally active and running around. If a kid without medical issues becomes fat, usually a bad diet is to blame for it.

Its quite easy and a modern day issue this generation of parents, who didnt grow up with this much technology, don't know how to handle. Plus, due to white mother's restrictive upbringing she believed kids should be allowed to do whatever they want.. so this happens :/

What I wanted to say. They adapt so well. They r welcoming to new people even though they r so different. They helped her get comfortable and feel at home. Was more supportive and not at all bratty like that 10 year old.
Ashley Kids shouldn’t have to work hard. They should work smart. They should be given the room to organize their time for studying and whatnot and still have time to hang out with their friends. The Nigerian parents are bad too. Their children are so sheltered. They’re just not as bad as the white family.
In all honesty, "fun" does not mean going out past midnight. My mom allowed us to go out and have fun, however we still had to be home by a certain time...
This world is unsafe. And it's dangerous for beautiful young girls to be out that late, even in groups.

@Joyce Woodruff I'm still 16 and my parents are like that. It is not fun to have your friends tease you for having helicopter parents. It had gotten to the point where my parents followed me into the movie theatre and everything and my friends had to help me to stand up for myself. My mom actually studied child development theory and knows that doing this is going to raise insecure children that can't handle change and cry over little dissapointments. They need someone to back them up and often times are not able to handle problems on their own or might even get over-depended on someone to set them straight. It is not good to treat your children that way. It's basic human science. Every psychologist warns parents when they are becoming "helicopter parents"
And I do live in a black household. My mom has learned to behave differently and it shows how much happier I am. It has nothing to do with lack of respect. And I am not trying to interfer with the way you do your things I am just trying to give you advice. Times change.
I love the Nigerian family but they got the "raising leaders" part wrong. A real leader knows how to interact with people from all walks of life. His kids are entirely too sheltered. It puts them at a disadvantage. They need a balance.

In theory that's the way, it should be but look at most political leaders, royal families, company directors etc. Most have lived a sheltered life of private schools, skiing trips and horse ridind. Places were you don't find ordinary people. All that brings a certain kind of confidence that pushes them to be leaders.

I love the Nigerian family, but I do agree with Nikki, the children need to have a little bit more fun. The children in this episode were great, but Nikki's children needed more structure.

Before I got a computer I would often just draw and play, then when I got the computer I played on it but I still continued doing stuff without it. Today this dosent seem to be the case anymore with kids
I can understand why he's doing that though. Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who's hobby is playing games and it can also be a way to distract themselves from any pain. Imagine not being able to do something that you enjoy doing and that helps you cope

@@Bruhette I am that one kid, though I cannot really help it because I was given electronics from a very early age. And I am very aware I am spoiled. have a computer, tablet, tv, and a phone. And I don't even use my tablet. I try to help my parents but It's hard to undo bad-parenting that happened to you. I sometimes wish they were a little more strict to me just so i wouldn't be such a fat blob sitting at my computer 8+ hours a day. Don't get me wrong I love being spoiled who wouldn't want to be spoiled but it makes me feel bad because my mom is very kind and my brother takes advantage over her by guilt-tripping her into buying him stuff. Now you may be wondering "Why not just force the changes yourself?" IT"S HARD, let me tell you. It's sort of for example: Imagine if all you ate was banana's. I think that's very insensitive to the kid. It might not even be due to addiction, but suddenly their entire life being charged without their permission or consent.
If somebody took my hobby away totally for a big period of time because they see it only as an addiction and a bad thing, and I just wanted a normal life, I would be upset too. Especially as a kid.
And maybe videogames are a way for him to socialize anyways, I don't think she should have made a drastic change like that and expect a 10 year old to be happy.

Yet I would spend hours upon hours reading as a kid. Something that once upon a time was seen as harmful. Allowing a kid some screen time isn't bad as long as it is limited and supervised.

@Drgnfli I agree that it's not always going to end with all men living in their parents basements at 40. Your boys- now men obviously have drive, motivation and a social conscience to go into the careers they've chosen. I can see that some men (some women too) probably use gaming as a stress release after work. Unfortunately, I hear from wives of men who are addicted to gaming and it causes so many arguments. Eg; Wife-Can you bath the kids while I cook dinner? Husband- Yes, I'm just going to finish this level first. (30 minutes later) W- Dinners ready! Why haven't the kids been bathed? H- I had an extra power and couldn't stop the game or I'd lose!
This petty selfish crap causes a lot of resentment. If it's ongoing then the ramifications are miserable for the whole family. I hope your sons know when enough is enough. If they're married with children I sincerely hope that their priorities are in order and their families come first!

It's his hobby and something he loves, too much of anything is not good, but she took it away suddenly and a large portion of it.
I think her bias is not at all helpful, she doesn't try to understand him at all and only sees his addiction.

As a black American fun is not the 1st option when it comes to living every day in my life and raising my Son.
They're really happy without the partying and that type of thing, they have a great time at home, it's fantastic. However they're pretty old now and I do think they need some time to go out and meet people and socialize, as that's an important skill in adulthood (and any age). They probably know how but some time with friends (outside of school) without your family makes sure your life is balanced. Just a bit of it.

I love how the Nigerian mom explained to the kids why the changes are being made and presented an alternative to what their used to. It isnt only about the activity but the valuable excitement of an activity.
Also I love that she seems to be open to suggestions some of the other kids have like one of the little ones was asking if they're gonna play a game

when I was first watching this I thought this boy was ridiculous and I’m sure other people do too, But when he said the reason he watches TV is to forget about his mom being gone, it made me feel really bad for him because every night I go on my phone and I have to watch something or else I cannot sleep because it is my way of coping with all the scary things in my life and my terrible anxiety.
That wasn't the reason he wanted to watch t.v. as a mom I saw right thru that. He's not missing mom half as much as he misses his game console lol.

As a former military kid, I did that same act of crying when I was in trouble or didn’t get my way everytime my dad was deployed. I still missed my dad, as he probs does his mom, but it seemed to somehow bring me to tears when I wanted to guilt trip my mom😂😂

This is why this show is great. Each mother has something to contribute to the other family. One mother is helping the teenagers who desperately need to evolve in this next stage with making friends and going out, and the other is teaching responsibility and… well not being or acting like a spoiled brat

This specific episode of wife swap was really great for me, because it reminds me a bit of my household. We have a similar dynamic to the Nigerian family, except we do have technology and consoles and stuff, because we believe that not everything is about work, but also not everything is about fun. To raise a child, you need discipline, but raising children isn’t all about discipline. I think discipline is more setting a guideline of what house rules to follow so everybody gets along, rather than reward and punishment. Every day we come home, do our chores, finish/start our homework, and then we can do what we like. I have a tv in my room, but getting it was a big thing, because I had to earn it. And because of that, I’m not hooked on it or spoiled by it, because it wasn’t just given to me. A few years ago I got an xbox, also a big thing, but it went in the living room. At the time, I was pretty hooked and always wanted to play it, and after some time of saving up I bought my own games, so it was allowed in my room. And because I wasn’t on it 24/7, and I grew to understand that moderation is important, I’m not a brat about it. Right now I play a lot of video games, and spend a lot of time in my room and I’m a bit of a nerd, but when I’m not playing video games I’m not jut sitting doing nothing, I’m reading, or drawing, or coding, and I eat healthy to balance out my lifestyle habits that involve a lot of sitting, so I’m not unhealthy. I think the Nigerian family has a good level of moderation, because they are pretty strict and work oriented, but they’ve grown in an environment where it isn’t forced upon them, and it isn’t seen as “work”. Fun is subjective, and even though to others it may seem like a chore, I agree that cooking as a family is a nice thing, and spending time as a family is fun on its own. It balances itself out, because the work oriented environment isn’t seen as work. The Caucasian American family is a little bit of a Mess.

I'm sorry, I'm not trying to body shame, or be mean. That 10yr boy Keign's weight is completely outta control. I know some kids are chubby when their young, and eventually slim out to a healthy weight. But that boys weight is obese and can create major health issues. New mommy I could gave a high 5 and a pat on the back, taking that game and TV outta his room. I would've called his tail out when he tried to play them. As soon as he said he missed mom, and watches TV to make himself feel better. So what's ur excuse when ur mom is there. He needs to enroll in some type of sports or activities that keep him busy. Cuz he's eating because he's bored. How could his parents let this get so outta control? It's hard enough being around other children that bully. They have let him make himself a big red target for other kids to pick on him. That's not even the major part of the weight. His heart is being over worked, hes a risk for diabetes, sleep apnea, and the list goes on. This is border line abuse and child neglect. If he was a pack of bones and malnourished, children services would be all over it. So the something should apply in this situation. Him and mom could do it together. They could go to a nutritionist get healthy meal plans, make out a workout plan, go for walks in the evening. Cuz let's face it he's learned his eating habits from her, she's killing herself and him with all that fast food cuz she's to lazy to cook. U can follow a recipe just as easy on star maps for directions to food places. Had he just been a little chubby I wouldn't had said anything. But his weight has gotten to a dangerous stage. I'm just concerned for him, I truly am, I'm not trying to throw no shade at him.

Friends are very crucial for kids. I dont understand how a parent who wants a successful child cant see that. Can prepare them all you want for leadership positions but if you isolate them from their peers they're not going to make it as leaders. Leaders know how to make strong connections, pick the right person for a job, read people, and convince them to follow instructions. Theres a lot of nuances that goes into being leader. I think you'll find that anytime your in a group and you have multiple people fighting for leadership positions, ultimately the group decides

Wow! I watched this whole episode and 😲. Honestly I thought it would be a disaster but both families really learned valuable lessons. Kinda sad at the 4 months later update, but maybe that's the takeaway from alternative knowledge.🤔

@@karana9201 The Akinbode family started to try to balance discipline with a little more freedom for the children. Also, one of their daughters went out of state to attend college.
Sadly, with the Mullis family, the parents decided to separate. I think in part due to the fact that they were able to get a glimpse of what an inclusive and loving family dynamic was like. Wish they could have used the lesson to work through their issues.
