      @@DrewFortune97 I don't think you were "ready" for this Tool track. This was the first song in 13 years, and I think it was meant for the fans not the casual listener. Their albums are meant to be listened to together as an experience, especially the last album. It took me a few listens to really appreciate this song, as I was expecting a typical single release type track. It is definitely meant as an intro to what things are to come and will probably fit greatly with the rest in one listen.

    The first time I listened, I thought the song was just OK. The next listen I liked it more. The listen after that, I liked it even more. Now I love it. That's kind of Tool in essence. You hear or realize things every single time you listen to these songs that you didn't before. They make the music for themselves and not necessarily for fans and have free reign to do so. They take their time crafting songs that are amazing and everyone else is just along for the ride. They are their own genre.
    It's the first song off a new album - they make albums, not necessarily just songs. It's just the set up for the rest of the album.
    Listen to Lateralus, The Grudge, Schism, Jambi, Vicarious, The Pot, Right in Two, 46&2, Stinkfist, Sober, Prison Sex, Parabol/Parabola, Pushit (live from Salival album), The Patient, Ticks and Leeches, Rosetta Stoned, etc.

This song reminds me of the the grudge was combined with right in two and a few other tool songs. I would say the eide sound scape of this track is unlike any other tool song, definitely there best work in that regard. @TheBlackiwid what are you talking about, they didn't have to compromise their sound for new fans, they have a very well established and have for years, they don't care what we think, as stated in many interviews they have stated this is art for them, they are very in control of their sound, not the label, and there are plenty of Tool songs that don't have a crazy build up, but the intrumental are great in this new track, that last part Danny, Adam, and Justin kill it, and this new song doesn't sound like APC or Puscifer, it sound like Tool, this is the perfect mixture of their last 3 records, and it's also only one track, everyone has their own opinion, sucks you didn't enjoy it as much, not everything has to have a punch or kick, and I'd really like to see the source that said they were compromising their new sound for a new audience lol that's the biggest load of bullshit I've ever read, I'm just saying lol

    • @merkaba48
      @merkaba48 4 роки тому

      @TheBlackiwid I also disagree. 'Knockout punches' have been a hallmark of Tool songs since AEnima. As the first track on the album, Fear Inoculum sounds like it's deliberately holding back to emphasize drops in the subsequent songs (I hope so, anyway).

    • @jafo321
      @jafo321 4 роки тому

      I'd have to agree with the OP on the fact that you come to them, not the other way around. You can't "expect" or you're setting yourself up for disappointment. They do have songs with "knock out" punches though. But expecting is the biggest mistake even Tool fans make with this band and that goes for songs or just about anything to do with this band from releases to songs to concerts. With Tool, don't expect just accept. This isn't the band from Opiate or Undertow or Aenima. They evolved around the time they put our Lateralus and 10,000 days. Fear Inoculum is just another evolution and growth for Tool. This is in my opinion because of the length of the songs on this album, probably their best version of Tool now. It's the first album I really have a hard time deciding what song is my favorite. Other Albums, not so much. JMO.

    Speaking as a seasoned fan of a whopping 9 years of the 22 I have spent on this good Earth, I wasn't blown away at first, but after a few dozen listens it has revealed itself to be incredible, and I believe the element that is lacking is the songs that surround it in the full album.

    Great reaction, Drew. I appreciate your honesty. Big and obvious paybacks are in songs like Lateralus, 46 & 2, Grudge, etc; you really can't go wrong with any of Tool's past albums. But starting with Fear Inoculum may be like running through the Louvre, passing works of the masters waiting to see a familiar cartoon character (did I just accidentally compare Slipknot to a cartoon character? Sorry. Actually I don't think they would mind!). By this point in Tool's career they don't need to prove they can rock out; they built an entire genre! Now their art is in the subtly. The "big" payback with Fear Inoculum comes in epiphanies, with multiple listens of the full album. Tool meant for it to be listened to as a whole. In fact the drummer wanted it to be one 87 minute long song! I truly envy you, if this draws you in, as you say, and you become a Tool fan. I wish I could be experiencing that again for my first time!

    To me Tool are definitely an acquired taste. It took me a LONG time to appreciate their style and structure, so it's understandable to not be into it right off the bat. For a long time I was critical of a lot of their music because I didn't have the patience for all of the extensive buildup and repetition they play around with. However I'd say there are definitely other songs they have that will probably garner your interest. The majority of their songs are long and drawn out, but there are plenty of heavy and head-banging moments to be found, as well as some deeply profound lyrics and powerful musical landscapes. Coming from someone who doesn't identify as a "hardcore" Tool fan, and only became a fan in recent years, I'd say this new one packs a bit less of a punch than most of the music I've heard from them. Definitely think you'll get into them over time!

    I think the knockout punch you were looking for wasn’t coming since it’s the intro to the album. I agree with you 100% about that but believe me, what you’re looking for will be found on the full album.

    Fair take. As a Tool fan since the 90's, I really felt similar after my first listen to this song. I think starting at their newest stuff is a disservice to you. I mean, it's fine but, you can hear their older sound in parts here and a lot of their older stuff does have that knockout punch. So, I'd go back and start from the beginning before the new album comes out.
    Invincible, a new track as well yet, only played live so far, definitely is assuring to me that they haven't lost that knockout ability. Can't wait to hear the studio track for that. Anyway, welcome to the fold and don't give up on this band. They just get better the more you listen and catch the intricacies that you(everyone) will likely miss the first couple listens. Spiral out!

    If you want one of their HEAVIEST songs, listen to Jambi, off of the 10,000 days album. Jambi is 100% tension and a sick guitar sound.

    Tool has been my favorite band for more than 20 years. I think your reaction was so well explained and how I felt myself. There are many tracks that will knock your ass out but your description was perfect. Try out “The Grudge” or “Ticks and Leaches”... these guys are kings of building and then blowing your face off, but they didn’t on this track. Fantastic video brother. I’ll be here to check out many more.

    If you're looking for heavy soul punching riffs/workout music, listen to 10,000 Days
    If you're looking for really diverse musical landscape and classic Tool listen to Ænema
    If you're looking for trip out psychedelic rock listen to Lateralus
    If your looking for darkness and anger listen to Undertow.
    Tool is one of those few bands where you can listen to LITERALLY any random picked song and be entertained.

    I can totally understand your way of seeing this. The thing is, it sounds so epic and so much pressure building up with that changes, you expect the explosion at one point. Just that one moment. This whole song keeps you in that tense that you want to release, but it doesn't, yet it's an awesome song that besides that one moment which would complete that satisfying moment you are so prepared for, has more than accomplished all else. Many songs of Tool manage that and I'd suggest you to listen to the Grudge. Awesome band.

    Tool is a master of subverting expectations. They are almost a genre of their own. Sober, 46 and 2, Aenima, and H. are all fantastic. They layer musical sounds like no one else out there.

    9.21 that little look you do, that's your first lesson in not having an expectation of Tool . I love that at this stage you don't know the crazy ass journey you are about to launch yourself on!! I wish you would have started with some of their older songs. This is very hard to grasp for a first listen. I would recomend Schism, Sober, The Grudge, Parabol/Parabola and then go back to this one ;-) You will get the punch def. from some of the older stuff. "The Grudge" will blow your mind... P.S.: Always go with lyric videos for Tool.
