Man I miss this game. Kid me played this and Naruto Ultimate Ninja 2 for hundreds of hours on my ps2. Kinda wish NRS would do 3D again, I really liked how it added another level to movement in neutral.
MK:DA really captured the essence of Mortal Kombat, in many ways. The atmosphere, the sounds, music, the visual presentation, the dark and eerie tone, character costume designs: it really is a great MK game, though not perfect. I never really appreciated it before, because I wasn't that into playing videogames (anymore) when the 3D era games came out, and I never owned MK:DA. But I came across the game by chance recently, and have been playing it, and it's a great game. I don't agree with some of the dudes commenting, who are claiming that the combo system here was better than it is in MK9 and MKX, I think that's just completely false: MK9 and MKX fight way better than any of the 3D era games ever did, and that's just being real. It is cool to see how characters now still retain lots of elements from way back. Quan Chi now still looks and fights kinda similar to what is seen here. I like that. They really developed and polished these characters and their fighting styles, over the years. Here's how I categorize MK games. I think they can be placed into one of five groups, while disregarding spin-off games. Oldskool 2D games: Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, Mortal Kombat 3, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, Mortal Kombat Trilogy. Crossover games: Mortal Kombat 4, Mortal Kombat Gold. 3D games: Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance, Mortal Kombat: Deception, Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. Crossover game: Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe. Modern 2D games: Mortal Kombat (2011), Mortal Kombat X. MK4 is in a category by itself. You can really see the attempt to go 3D, but for some reason, it doesn't quite feel like a true 3D game just yet. Then with MK5 they got the hang of it, and the games stayed the same (gameplay-wise) up untill MKvsDCU, which feels like a bridge between MK:A and MK9. I think MKX in many ways is in fact the best MK game, it is the culmination of a long learning process, but at the same time I think MKX had a lot more potential, if that makes any sense. Despite being a great game and beautifully made, I can't help but feel like it's lacking something. I also think they focussed their time, energy, effort, creativity and money in some wrong areas, while ignoring aspects that should've been explored more.
Yeah MK4 is a good 3d attempt but doesn't seem as great as it should have. Deadly Alliance has managed to resuscitate the franchise while updating it into a new dimension. So I agree with you there!
They're focusing on the competitive scene and balance, and that's a good thing. I personally can't choose from MK9 or MKX because they both feel like MK games but at the same time they play alot differently. While MKX looks like what UMK3 would look like if it had modern graphics, and mechanics (dash and standing juggles), MK9 made the meta which is still relevant to MKX.
I have loved all of them Maybe my least favorite would be 9 ? But I still love it just my least favorite Deception is awesome and on mk10 I feel like the hits are strong asf lol almost knocking me out to
It's good to see you are still playing this game. I started watching your vids when I first created my account in 2008. Helped my MK game-play a lot back then.
Out of the 3d era games DA was my favorite because of the gameplay and roster. I thought deception's roster was kinda lacking tbh, but the gameplay was great. And Armageddon was kinda wierd to me gameplay wise, roster was legendary tho (in my opinion.)
Yea, Armageddon requires a college major essentially to understand. It's not a game that could just be picked up, or left as is. It requires deep knowledge and understanding. A super rare gem essentially, even though its gameplay was ass. Deception had some crazy shit you could only do in that game, rest of its gameplay was hella nerfed, and nerfed even harder in MKA (garbage ass game). MKDA is pure hearted gameplay. Nothing fancy or technical about it. Just straight fundamentals being played at the highest level possible for a fighting game. BY FAR the greatest fighting game ever made. Both balanced AND FUN.
@@ShiftyGuy777 I think it's because not much people played it at a competitive level, i have to admit that MKDA has the best combat system out of the MK PS2 games, but Deception is my favourite because of nostalgia.
Because this game is more button heavy than the other 3D games, as 3D fighters should be button heavy, I still prefer modern 2D MK tbh but I wouldn’t mind seeing them do 3D at least once.
the most competitively balanced mk game for sure. while other mk games just set out to be "balanced" (casual/hardcore hybrid. no separate tournament mode to rid of the casual elements, etc)
This one had the best movement speed and mechanically just felt right. The attacks were quick and it was poke heavy. I always thought I was tripping back in the day when I felt something was off with Deception's movement. I fired it up for the first time and noticed something felt off. There was more delay in the inputs and it felt slower. Idk why they did that. If Deception kept the movement and attack speed of DA it would have been PERFECT. Deadly Alliance attack speed with Deceptions destructible environments and mini games🤤
thanks gerchap! it made me my reading this yesterday. ill message you on TYM soon. sorry i haven't gone back. i noticed the thread became more about somberness, so i didn't want to take any attention away from that. hope all is well with you soon, and i promise to message you soon. be and stay well.
Deadly Alliance is just so unbelievably fun and perfect in ever conceivable way. As a standing testament to just how overrated Mortal Kombat 9 is, after playing it for about five or six months, all of my friends and I went back to playing the 3D era games. I'm hoping that Mortal Kombat X will have more staying power and replay value, we'll see very soon.
MK9 is deserving of it's praise. This fighting system is just too simplistic and restrictive. MK9 gives a more in_depth experience, whilst making it just as accessible as MK is known for.
The peeps that prefer the 3D era are mostly casuals though that don't care about depth. MK9 emulated UMK3 jab pressure with blockstring staggers, and MKX did it with blockstring staggers AND run cancels. The two are basically what UMK3 would've been if we had patches in games back then.
There's a reason why MK2 is still the pinnacle of the series and it had NOTHING to do with run cancels, jab pressure and block string staggers. That all came after people decided to take a second and third look at the game and how it was in its current form.
Check is what a combo expert is. So on point and used to follow you back in mkx days. Man, time flies...still love playing these games nowadays since nowadays mk games are ticking me off and with all the pride promotion, for the alphabet people(alphabet people make me vomit and ridicule my existence). Its cool but it's out of order for me ino
I noticed that on the ps2, you for whatever reason actually get punished for using combos. Nowadays if you're playing Kitana, you use the Fan Lift to extend combos, but in this game, if you use the Fan Lift to extent combos, it actually does almost nothing to their health bar after the fan Lift. I was doing big combos but still with only 17 or so damage. I got to a 9 hit combo doing it and it was a bummer to see that apparently you get punished in this game just for making combos in ways old Midway didn't intend you to back in the day.

it does not work on most characters. to my knowledge, it only works vs nitara. the height difference after high kick is due to the high kick not working on most characters for this combo. when you are doing this combo, if you listen closely, you can hear when they hit the ground (combo not working). even though the kick connects and shows it as part of the combo, the combo is blockable, on everyone besides nitara and reptile i think, but is hard to remember
I have a request. When mkx comes out and if you play it can you do a vid with subzero combos first? He's my fav and I wanna main him as fast as possible. If not then it's cool.

yea i use a gamecube controller on my wii. it really is tough, but i can manage to get everything done. getting those double change stance combos was probably the hardest, along with Kenshi's lift. it is my favorite controller of all time, and yea, i know its bad. the search still continues for the perfect controller. maybe one day. looking into a battle beaver currently

yeah, for some reason you couldn't buffer the strings in this game so your timing had to be more precise
