The Music Box was so weird to me because you have this very serious and melodramatic horror game but here's Mario and Luigi alongside these anime characters. It'd be like if they just all of a sudden were in Silent Hill, I just can't take it seriously
I feel like the creator should have either leaned more into the Mario Universe or should’ve just made it into its own thing.
It lacks whimsy that we expect to be there
If the anime OCs were replaced with more Mario characters--even Toad OCs or something--I would've found it way more palatable.

@@autocorrect5456 Untrue, I saw a playthrough of this years ago. Its a solid horror game (although I don't get why you constantly get punished for investigating when thats all you can do) but again the Bros being in it with barely anything Mario related took me out of it

what kills me about mario the music box is how fucking good the art is for no reason. It's genuinely some of the most on-model mario art I've seen online and it's a game that takes itself way too seriously. It's not even badly written, it's just... Mario is in there.

Vinny handled The Music Box fairly well. Gave it a bit, acknowledged that it didn't fit Sunday Vibes very well, said it looks interesting while still doing a bit of lampooning on it being fucking Mario. Good stuff

fun fact: mario and the music box was made during a crisis in the dev’s life. mario is only really there because he’s they’re comfort character… also play more betterified it’s AWESOME and it’ll let you use cheat codes unimpeeded
The game has a remaster and a sequal, and soon a remake of it and its sequal, they are good games! :3

I blame Earthbound.

I legitimately can't tell if the first level of The Super Adventures of John's music (30:28) was replaced in the VOD or not. Even chat's reaction made it even more confusing. It just sounds like Vinny's Marge/Toad voice

I really want him to. It's a fucking awesome game and even if Mario and Luigi feel a bit out of place, it really is a good horror game.

There's seems to be a mistake at 1:20:22 where Zeldoom: Echoes of Wisdoom is shown. The watermark implies that it was made by PilotRedSun, but it seems to have been made by another animator called Ronununu.
I'm sure no harm was meant of course, but it would of course still be best if it was somehow amended ;>
I can't figure out why someone made the conscious decision to send that to Vinny with a fake edited watermark, not giving correct credit. What's the point or goal?
Only conspiracy I can come up with is : bootleg merch seller who wants to expand their inventory would do this.

PilotRedSun stopped animating like that years ago so anyone who likes PilotRedSun enough to put his mark on it should have known better.
I hope Vinny actually comes back to Betterified. Those levels ha sampled had just the right level of interestingness and shitpostery. Implementing a 3D Guardian was actually insane

i hope vinny plays mario the music box in full one day, it's such a bizarre experience. it's been a few years since i've played it but iirc the luigi chews his arm off death scene is just the tip of the iceberg for how insane this game gets especially the endings

Lesson 4 of Mario Teaches Typing 3 got me an idea: a typing game that are typed from the perspective of various characters in the story. Imagine Bram's Dracula book but you type them.
Mario's Music Box has made me come to the realization that a lot of RPG Maker horror games are really just "do the right thing or else you're fuckin' dead!" Ao Oni is pretty similar to it, just being much lesser in quality of course.
That's because it's a very easy way to write horror, because it's all very controlled in favor of the developer. It comes from the text adventure style and choose your Aventure games too, were some expected you to memorize the better routes and punished you anytime you slipped out. It's a very effective system to get the player on rails with the simplest game mechanics, and it clearly works dearly for a certain type of game. The thing is this type of game planning does get old fast for outsiders, and it's not a very hollistically interesting style of videogame. Some people do like the simplicity and charming RPGMaker look though.

It's so surreal seeing Vinny play Bestified. Raocow's LP of it is 79 parts long & full of La-mulana level cryptic secrets, that game is absolutely insane
I think my favourite bit is how many times they find stupid ways to loop back to that first level.

That typing game is legendary.
That first Mario head is tracked by hand, they filmed their hand and moved it around to make the puppet, they did this with the dog of wisdom I recognize this.
Mario music box still scares me with the gory mario deaths, sound effects, and the cherry on top, the anime style illustration, because if there's any kind of animated violence that chills me to my core, it's anime. I don't know why?
That first game felt so fresh and creative, also made me laugh. 4 marios indeed 🔥

Making me feel old to see how many people in chat don't recognize Mario the music box. It is a genuinely good horror despite the whole Mario RPG maker thing going on (I'm pretty sure the original released right before it became a big trend too).

The Zelda animation at the end was made by ronununu, their channel started a year ago. Is that the same person as PilotRedSun? That channel stopped 3 years ago. But I don't see anything other than the name PilotRedSun being on this clip to indicate they're the same person. Confused!

For those unaware, the joke behind Betterfied is that it is a meme remix of an existing SMBX level pack. Most of the levels are modified versions of levels from the original pack.
